Default Chris Palmer and Kevin Gilbride

Both have Super Bowl rings now.

Quote:
Palmer back on NFL's biggest stage

There hasn't just been 11 years between Super Bowl appearances for New York Giants quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer. There have been five cities, two offensive coordinator stints and one head-coaching position.

During that time, Palmer coached two Pro Bowl quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Tony Romo. And now he has tutored Eli Manning and helped the fourth-year quarterback reach his first Super Bowl.

Palmer's dismissals as head coach in Cleveland and offensive coordinator in Houston are hardly forgotten, but he is as comfortable as ever in his latest stop with the Giants.

"Things happen," said Palmer, who started his NFL coaching career as a receivers coach for the Oilers in 1990. "When you get into coaching, you know what it's all about. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't, but that doesn't mean you're a bad coach if it doesn't work out. I feel I can coach in this league. And I've had opportunities to continue coaching, and that's all you can ask for."

-------------------------------

Palmer replaced Kevin Gilbride, who was promoted to Giants offensive coordinator after three seasons as quarterbacks coach. Palmer had worked with Giants coach Tom Coughlin and Gilbride during previous coaching stops.

I didn't even know he was on their coaching staff. I still remember Kevin and Buddy fighting in the Dome.

The Oilers were great while Gilbride was here here, but this just goes to show how bad Carr was because it wasn't Palmer.

I have no problems giving Gilbride the props. His longest tenured job in the NFL had been with the Oilers... I remember people thinking he would be out of football when the 'run-and-shoot' died.... Two or three years later he was the head coach of the San Deigo Chargers IIRC, but he has bounced around...

hey Gilbride, how does getting the 35-3 monkey off your back feel? pretty damn good i bet.

That guy might even enjoy some head coaching consideration now that he has a ring and helped Manning develop. Everyone is looking for someone to groom their young QB into something.

As for Palmer, its just proof that you can shine and polish a turd all you want, its still gonna be a turd. No one can turn a turd into a quality NFL QB, not even Palmer...but if you give him some talent, he can get HELP get the job done.

Palmer - Brunner, Bledsoe, Couch, Carr, Romo and Manning. Carr and Couch just did not have the ability to learn how to play this game.

That 35-3 monkey is more on Jim Eddy than Gilbride. However both Kevin Gilbride and Chris Palmer can thank Steve Spagnuolo for their Super Bowl rings. The Giants D played the part of Buddy Ryan and the Pats played the part of Kevin Gilbride as they punched the Pats right in the mouth.

See, I'm of the impression that you can hang the 35-3 on everyone within the Oilers organizations at that time... Certainly Jim Eddy's defense imploded, but the offense went into a deep freeze too... Nah, that debacle is on everyone equally..

I do agree though, that it was the Giants 'D' that 'punched' Gilbride, errrrr the Patriots in the mouth - and for his troubles Steve Spagnuolo will wind up a HC.

Palmer was unjustly villified here...mostly from the Carr can do no wrong crowd (you know who you are). He is a great coach and a class individual (ok, so he is boring as hell) and glad to see him with a ring. Gillbride needed to be with a control freak like Coughlin. Otherwise he would never run the ball.

I might have to disagree here. Gilbride as a head coach in San Diego, the Chargers attempted 409 & 460 rushes per season respectively.. The Giants this year (under Coughlin's stranglehold) rushed the ball 469 times. Thats pretty close, considering.

I think there is a misconception about Gilbride because of the 4 seasons he spent with the Oilers run-and-shoot under Pardee. But take a look at other teams that he has been a coordinator for: Jacksonville, Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Not teams that conjure up pass first, run next week if ever mentalities.

We knew there were much bigger problems with this franchise when Palmer was fired just two games into the 2005 season. That was a pathetic display of franchise failure and meltdown. Sad that he was the scapegoat for situations well beyond his control.

Default Re: Chris Palmer and Kevin Gilbride

The day Palmer was sent packing I started saying they fired the wrong coach and that was true as far as it went. I didn't know at the time that the root of the problem was the QB but I knew that our coaching staff on both sides of the ball was going nowhere fast. I'm not sure if it was the exact day but I think this was when the Fire Capers Club was born.

At the time I thought they should have sent Dom packing and then promoted Palmer to HC. Now I know that it wouldn't have made any difference and that Chris Palmer was probably glad to be let go after three seasons of trying to get results out of David. If they had fired Dom and promoted Chris Palmer then he would have been out the door shortly thereafter.

Coach killing QB's are bad news.
Coach killing QB's who are the apple of the owners eye are ten times worse.

I'm glad both of these guys got their rings. Gilbride gets a bum rap. He spent four years coaching the Run & Shoot and it's like he'll never be associated with anything else. He didn't do much as a HC in San Diego but that's nothing to be ashamed of. Lots of perfectly good assistant coaches don't pack the gear to be a HC in the NFL. He's a quality assistant and he's got the resume to back that up.
