Default TexansSeminole's 1st round mock

Never really made a full first round mock draft before, but I figure I can give it a try.

1. Miami, DE Chris Long, Virginia. It just fits. A combination of Matt Roth and Chris Long on each sides of a 3-4 defensive line sounds potentially dominant.

2. St. Louis, DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU. They got Carriker in the first round last year, but they can still use help at the DT spot with Dorsey.

3. Atlanta, RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas. They gave up Drew Brees and LT for Michael Vick. Didn't exactly work out for them. With no QB deserving a selection over McFadden, the Falcons close on a 2 headed monster with McFadden and Dunn.

4. Oakland, DT Sedrick Ellis, USC. Sapp is 35 now and looks to be losing his steam. They've got some decent backups, but Ellis will get significant play time early and could be Sapp's replacement.

5. Kansas City, OT Jake Long, Michigan. Kansas City needs help on it's offensive line pretty badly, I can't see them passing on the best offensive lineman in the draft.

6. New York (J), DE Calais Campbell, Miami. Big 6-8 280 lb DE for their 3-4 defensive line. This guy is like Mario Williams, but just not quite as thick. He's a junior with something like 19 sacks and 38 tackles for loss. I could have gone with Matt Ryan here, but they have Clemens and Pennington.

7. New England, DE/LB Vernon Gholston, Ohio State. Let this kid learn from former Ohio State player Mike Vrabel and recently injured Rosevelt Colvin. Could be a terror coming off the edge.

8. Baltimore, QB Matt Ryan, Boston College. Ravens need a QB bad.

9. Cincinnati, OLB Keith Rivers, USC. Cincinnati's defense is pretty bad, they could use a young quick linebacker to help their team speed.

10. New Orleans, CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida. New Orleans has the worst secondary in the league probably. With Mike Jenkins they get a corner with excellent size, experience, and athletic ability.

11. Buffalo, WR DeSean Jackson, California. Buffalo has some receivers, but their only receiver worthy of #1 or #2 is Evans, behind him they have Josh Reed and Roscoe Parrish. Jackson fits right in with these speedy receivers.

12. Denver, S Kenny Phillips, Miami. Denver has some great corners, but they are getting hurt with poor play from their strong safety position. John Lynch is aging as well and it would do the Broncos alot of good to grab a safety like Phillips here.

13. Carolina, WR Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma. The Panthers have nobody outside Steve Smith at the WR position. Give your QBs someone else to throw to.

14. Chicago, QB Brian Brohm, Louisville. He falls right into their lap and they take him. No more Grossman vs. Griese.

15. Detroit, QB Andre Woodson, Kentucky. Detroit has Kitna, but nobody behind him. Kitna is aging, and why not bring a QB in and give him some time to learn how to play with these explosive receivers. I was thinking about going offensive line here because Kitna got sacked 50 times last year.

16. Arizona, RB Felix Jones, Arkansas. Edge took 80% of the carries last year. The Cardinals need a change of pace back and someone to take the load off of Edge before they run him into the ground.

17. Minnesota, CB Aqib Talib, Kansas. The Vikings have a great rush defense, but their pass defense needs to get stronger. Talib is a great player, worth taking here.

18. Houston, OT Ryan Clady, Boise State. Clady slips to 18 and the Texans can't pass on a left tackle that can anchor their line for years.

19. Philadelphia, CB Antone Cason, Arizona. The Eagles need a WR but Cason won the Thorpe award and they could use some talented youth in their secondary.

20. Tampa Bay, WR Early Doucet, LSU. Tampa needs some more weapons in the passing game. Doucet should add another dimension.

21. Washington, WR Adarius Bowman, Oklahoma State. The Redskins also need another wide receiver. Bowman is coming off of a knee injury, but you could argue that he is the most athletic wide receiver in this draft easily. 6-3 220 and fast.

22. Dallas, RB Jonathan Stewart, Oregon. With Jones leaving and Barber's history with complimentary running backs, the Cowboys take Stewart who can take alot of the load off of Barber.

23. Pittsburgh, OT Sam Baker, USC. Pittsburgh always seems to struggle in protection during crucial games. They need some help protecting their QB.

24. Tennessee, WR Limas Sweed, Texas. Vince needs some more weapons it appears and he has a history with Sweed.

25. Seattle, RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois. Alexander needs some help running the rock or he will continue to get injured.

26. Jacksonville, WR Mario Manningham, Michigan. Ok they have their QB. Manningham will add the receiver that the Jags were looking for when they took Matt Jones.

27. San Diego, LB Dan Connor, Penn State. Connor falls right into their lap and they seal their linebackers up with this guy.

28. Dallas, CB Reggie Smith, Oklahoma. The Cowboys secondary wasn't exactly great last year, why not grab another guy from OU.

29. San Francisco, DT Pat Sims, Auburn. San Fran needs some strength up front.

30. Green Bay, OLB Xavier Adibi, Virginia Tech. The Packers could have a really sick linebacking core with Adibi, Hawk, and Barnett.

31. New York (G), CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy. Giants need another corner, this guy fits the bill.

Maybe Atlanta decides McFadden is hands down bpa but folks seem to keep forgetting about Norwood who has over 6 ypc and over 600 yds each of the last two years plus is a good receiver. Definitely not a need pick.

I'm thinking Woodson to Atlanta at the moment myself....he's gonna be a player in this league imo.

I can see Atlanta picking McFadden but not for football reasons . They need a big name to forget about Vick .

Default Re: TexansSeminole's 1st round mock

I like this mock for the most part. I agree that Cason, Calais, Gholston and Ellis will all be picked possibly earlier than some may think. I could see 4 DL in the 1st 5 picks once draft day rolls around to be honest. I may not agree with Long going #1 but it wouldn't surprise me. I would love for him to fall to #4 and play for Oakland like his pop....so I am biased.

I think a shortlist of guys the Texans could have a shot at with #18 that I like are Phillips, Cason, Baker, Felix Jones, and Clady. any of those guys could come in and start in 08 except Clady who is more of a project imho and my least favorite on the shortlist. I'd rather get a guy who faced top competition 9 times out of 10 in the 1st Round. Give me Phillips or Cason and I think things start to chagne on defense. OR Give me a good RB or OL prospect to continue to stock our OL and backfield through the draft. I will be happy with whatever they do, because the GM has shown that he knows talent and where value is (see Winston and Spencer picks in 06 and Bennett in 07) I may not be a huge fan of the coaching staff, but RS has done a good job improving the roster since he got here. Thanks Rick.

Couldn't have said it better.

Norwood is better than Dunn at this point. He is the least mentioned RB from that draft class, but he cant be worse than the 3rd best (behind MJD & Addai).

He runs a 4.33!!!

I know that we don't need a WR but after watching WR Limas Sweed in the senoir bowl practices on the NFL network he is looking like mis-match waiting to happen at 6'5" 220 and very good speed, could you imagine him paired with Andre Johnson. That would be like Rice and John Taylor for matt shaub, I know you guys are going to beat me up but that would be awesome.

The one I disagree with is New England which would change a lot afterwards. With Samual and Gay FA and Hobbs as the only corner they can say as a realistic starter I think they will take someone in secondary, even if it is a little of a reach (many 5 slots or so) so they do not have to spend a lot of money in the offseason trying to sign FA.

The top end 1-10 looks really solid, after that I would say too many WR, QB and RB and not enough big uglies.

There's a couple things about that. Warrick Dunn is 32 with 11 seasons under his belt. Even though Warrick is my boy from FSU, with almost 2,500 carries he is going to need to be replaced eventually. Sure they have Norwood, but another thing that bothers me, are we sure he can be a #1 back? I dunno, 100 carries this year, 1 TD.

It's more Dunn that I would be worried about. With McFadden you have a bonifide starter for years with Norwood there as well, you've got promising 2 headed monster for the future, and a good 3 headed monster in the short run.

The NE pick was really hard to figure out. There are alot of guys to choose from. I was thinking secondary but who? Maybe Mike Jenkins, but I am not buying this Kenny Phillips to the Patriots hype.

Jenkins was my first thought but I have to figure out how each is graded out. I know there is different points of view on picking for need or for BPA in the first, but the way I see it if you are picking 7th and CB is your number one priority by far why not reach for the best CB available even if he is not listed until 12th as the best overall talented player in the draft. It is not like you are reaching from there into the second round, besides the player should not be some scrub either.

We're getting some pretty good coverage & analysis on Woodson this week from the NFLNet coming out of Mobile and Woodside, while talented with a strong arm, has been very inconsistant in his college career. They've backed it up with a lot of tape, and he is very spotty in his performances. But the talent is there. We'll see what he looks like in the game Saturday ?

Good job on the mock. I think your Top 10 is alot more realistic than what I have seen. Especially the Miami pick. As I've said to many though, the only problem I have with many of these mocks is Dallas taking a RB. It doesn't make sense to me. I know Jones is probably gone but they still have Barber and Tyson Thompson. In this deep draft they can probably even get one later. With Glenn probably retired because of the most recent..yesterday I believe..surgery and TO being 34 they need WRs to go with Crayton and the other young guys that played this year. I like the CB pick though. I definitely think WR and CB is their top priority.

17. Minnesota, CB Aqib Talib, Kansas. The Vikings have a great rush defense, but their pass defense needs to get stronger. Talib is a great player, worth taking here.

31. New York (G), CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy. Giants need another corner, this guy fits the bill.
i like most of your picks except those 4

- i just dont see how denver doesnt go o-line or d-line with their pick.. they're a playoff team easy if they get stronger in he trenches

-detroit drafted stanton in the 2nd rd last yr.. and need to go o-line too

- i dont see the vikes taking another young cb when they have mccauley, grifin aswell as winfield.. more o-line, te or de's imo

-likewise with the giants, ross and webster have played well and they have madison too.. lb'er, o-line or safety.. or d-line if strachan decides to call it quits... or maybe a kicker too

We need more options on that offense because when Andre went out the guys did step up but we had no threat that put fear into teams. I think that we should fix our defense issues through Free Agency but the early picks in the draft should go towards get more firepower on offense.
