Default Editorial:Shanahan should take page from Parcells book and retire

Mike Shanahan should quit. Retirement would do wonders for his career. Just check out Bill Parcells.

If you were watching ESPN during the month of December, you might think that Parcells had invented professional football. Having just been named the vice president of the lowly Miami Dolphins, Parcells was wrapping up his duties with the World Wide Leader as he prepared to come out of retirement for the fourth time. The network had him critique what they considered the best NFL teams of all time and decide who would win if a great team from the past played the 2008 New England Patriots. Parcells being, of course, the ultimate authority.

Each time Parcells has 'un-retired,' he has landed a bigger and better gig - and his legend has grown, exemplifying the term, "Failing upward." His return to football is greeted each time as if a face off of football's Mount Rushmore had descended the mountain to save the game. Around the studios in Bristol, Conn., they seemed to be trying to get the championship hardware renamed "The Big Tuna Trophy."

Frankly, I just don't get it. I'm totally at a loss to explain why everyone in the NFL genuflects when Parcells' name gets mentioned. Why? What makes him the ultimate authority about pro football, or some sort of Godfather of the Headset?

Whythebig fuss about how great Bill Parcells is?

The list of accomplishments and raw numbers simply don't back up all the hype.

Let's start with the numbers. Parcells' career head coaching mark is 172 wins and 130 losses. He has a .569 regular season winning percentage, and a .578 mark (11-8) in the playoffs. He took three teams to the Super Bowl (the most recent in 1996), winning the Lombardi Trophy twice.

Compare those stats with Shanahan. The Broncos coach since 1995, he has also won two Super Bowl titles. (Shanny has been a head coach or offensive coordinator in six Super Bowls). Even after suffering through just his second losing season with the Broncos, Shanahan has a career winning percentage of .605 (138-90). Like Parcells, he's three games over .500 (8-5) in the postseason, yet I don't see the networks lining up to ask Mike if the '93 Cowboys could beat the '08 Pats.

No way Shanahan should leave the Broncos or retire.

Despite the misleading title that's not what the article is about at all.

If they go 7-9 or 8-8 again next season, I could see him being fired. I think it's kind of interesting that his offense hasn't been quite as productive without Kubiak as the OC

Parcells has taken on some bad teams and turned them around. The winning percentages never look good when you take on those jobs. He built the Pats into a Super Bowl contender, he built the Jets into a playoff team, and he built the Cowboys that choked this year and last. The guy's a good personnel guy and a good coach. Just look at some of the players he's taken in the draft.

Nothing against Shanahan, but he's just not quite up to Parcells' level, IMO. If Kubiak turns our team into a SB contender, that's more impressive than turning the Broncos back into one, IMO. It's a much harder road. Those are the kinds of jobs that Parcells has taken. He's doing it again with the Dolphins and I have no doubt they'll be back in the playoff hunt in a few years with a solid team.
