I remember when the Dynamo were nominated were nominated for some sort of award you could vote for online. One guy set up a script that allowed him to vote 500,000 times and the website never caught on.

The award given to Bob Sanders was the AP Defensive Player of the Year. The associated press votes on that and blah blah blah.

This award is completely different. It's voted by the fans, and GMC sponsors it.

Similar to AP Rookie of the Year and the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year.

Anquan Boldin won the award AP OROY and Dominick Davis won Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year in 2003.

Williams also has 55 tackles, of which 39 were solo, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The total net yardage on plays in which he was in on the tackle this season is 1.5 yards, an average of .027 yards per play.

“I just feel a lot more comfortable,” Williams said of the difference between his rookie year and this season. “I’m just running around having fun.”

Although Williams was not chosen for the Pro Bowl, his improvement has been noticed. Kansas City Chiefs Coach Herman Edwards, whose team surrendered two sacks to Williams, praised him for his perseverance.

“There’s a lot of pressure on kids when they’re the first pick,” Edwards said. “That’s a tough spot to be in. He’s done a good job, and in his second year, all of the sudden he’s becoming the player that everyone anticipated he’d be.”

Oakland Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin described Williams as a “dominant player.”

“We haven’t played anyone with as much ability as him, and I’m sure he’ll continue to put it together and be a dominant player for a long time,” Kiffin wrote in an e-mail message.

Joe Thomas, a rookie left tackle for the Cleveland Browns, said he was surprised that Williams was not selected for the Pro Bowl. Thomas, an alternate pick for the game, said Williams had a rare combination of size, speed and strength for a defensive end.

“He can be as good as he wants to be,” Thomas said in a telephone interview.

Last season, such praise would have been out of place. Williams said that he was overwhelmed by his responsibilities on defense.
