Default Can you guys tell me about the situation on your team?

Hi. I'm a 49ers fan and I've been interested in the Houston Texans and their development for the past couple of years. Thinking they were a team on the rise. But I'm not too certain about the detailed information regarding your ball club. Your needs at key positions, coaching changes (I know about the Alex Gibbs thing that just happened the other day, but other than that I'm not too certain), and other events that have occurred. This is because I live in California and don't get to see the Texans play that often. Can you guys give me the basic scoop? Oh and how do you guys feel about Matt Schuab?

Well, it's the Texacos now... j/k

We have serious needs at LT and Safety, We have Shanahan's kid at Off. Cord.

The Titans are just a bunch of inbreds from Uranus.

Schaub, I still need to see a full season to know how he looks (Sage started 6 or so games)

As far as our coaching goes I think that we are pretty much set. Schaub is a good QB, not great. We got to see glimpses of him this year and what he could do but he was injured this year and our great backup Sage Rosenfels did great! Next year playoffs here we come!!!

Default Re: Can you guys tell me about the situation on your team?

Head Coach Kubiak has done a great job in his first two years. He's brought over the Denver style offense (a zone blocking, west coast hybrid with some bootlegs and play actions). We had our best season at 8-8 and look to be a team on the rise. It has been argued that we could have had a winning season, had we not led the league in injuries this past year.

Coach Gibbs will help solidify an offensive line that has been taking some heat in previous season. However, last year we only gave up 22 sacks (a remarkable improvement) maniely due to Schaub and Rosenfels under center. They have a quick trigger and are decisive with their passes rather than the confused and shell-shocked Carr. Getting rid of him has been instrumental in our development as an offense.

For our needs, the critical positions are LT, FS and Cornerback.

Ephraim Salaam is getting pretty old, but is servicable at this point at LT. Kubiak has openly expressed a desire for a young, franchise LT going into next year. Everyone agrees.

FS is a position that we haven't been able to figure out. C.C. Brown is servicable at SS (as is Will Demps should he resign with us), but we need a true ball-hawking FS. When you play Peyton Manning twice a year, you can't afford to be weak in the secondary. Which leads me to....

Cornerback. Dunta Robinson has been our best CB for the last three years, but has suffered a severe leg injury that will keep him out until mid season, at the minimum. Rookie Fred Bennett has been impressive this year and has played his way into the starting lineup, but that's about it with our cornerbacks. Everyone else is a nickleback, at best. Some shouldn't even be in the league. (Faggins)

Strength of the team is our WR's, LB's, TE's and Mario Williams.

Matt Schaub is the leader of the Texans. He's had his up and downs this last year, especially with the injuries, but is a leader on the field and in the locker room. He's an accurate and decisive passer but has his moments when he reminds us that he hasn't played a lot. I think that most Texan fans see the potential in Schaub that Kubiak sees, and that's a big relief from what we've been forced to watch under Carr. But overall, Schaub is a breath of fresh air and has all the tools and smarts to lead us to the next level. We just need him to stay healthy.

The only reason we need a LT, is because of the age of our current LT.

Only five teams have given up less sacks than the Houston Texans.

Safety I think, has been a catch-phrase around here. I think we are pretty deep at the safety position, with CC Brown, Glenn Earl, Von Hutchins, Will Demps, and Michael Boulware.

Linebacker, once we get past our starters, we've got nothing.

Cornerback, we've got average talent, whether your talking about our starting lineup, our back-ups, our practice squad, or our IR list.

Defensive line is our second strong spot on defense. Our starters are starters, and we've got decent talent with lots of heart on the bench.

Offensively, only 5 teams scored more points than we did. Only 11 teams avg'd more points per game. All playoff teams, plus Arizona, Cleveland, & Cincinatti.

And we fumbled, bumbled, & stumbled on offense all year long, and couldn't find a running game to save our lives.

We were 5-2 at home, we were 7-2 outside our division(which sent three teams to the play-offs).

We've got some work to do, but I do believe we are on the right track.

6-2, yo...

At home, we beat:
Chiefs
Dolphins
Saints
Broncos
Buccaneers
Jaguars

Man, no wonder I enjoyed going to the games so much this year... we really went 6-2??? That's a pretty good season! I hadn't really thought of it...

We are deep at SS, not saftey. We have not one FS on the roster. Hutchins is a nickle back, Boulware is a WLB and the rest play one postioion. We need a CB, OLB, ball hawk, FS, TE, and RB, in no particular order. And some G/C wouldnt hurt. And a pass rushing DE. And a big space eater DT. We are close, but still have a few holes to fill.

We're also very old and rickety at center. McKinney went down in our third game last year and Mike Flanagan came in. Flanagan is getting old and isn't as good in the run game as McKinney. Neither of these guys give me a secure feeling. They're both getting long in the tooth.

We've got a couple of kids (Chris White, Eslinger) that may or may not be the future of the team. White was more for Sherman's offense and ended the season injured. Eslinger we picked up as a street free agent and put on our practice squad but he might be the perfect fit for Gibbs' zone blocking system; a lot of guys had him highly rated when he came out of college.

We've also got Drew Hodgdon that we drafted a few years ago but ended up cutting last year. But with the injuries on the line, we ended up bringing him back by the end of the season and he didn't play too bad. Some people have suggested that Brandon Frye who was drafted as a tackle last year or Studdard who was drafted as a guard last year might move over to center.

But to me, we've still got a question mark at center.

To think that one isn't the cause of the other is crazy. Our O-line did an excellent job of protecting the QB, but mainly b/c the QB's got rid of the ball quickly. The O-line, however, couldn't open a hole for the RB's to save their lives, they were doing everything they could to hold off the defenders for a three step drop.

We need an LT, b/c we don't have one...we also need a C extremely badly, and as much as I respect Gibbs, I don't have the optomism that everyone else does that we are going to be saved by Elsinger, and cast off from another team that we just picked up. Nor the new Nigerian Center that we picked up. I don't see it happening there. We need a 1st round LT, and a FA C,

Default Re: Can you guys tell me about the situation on your team?

A team that with some continued smart moves in FA and the draft could bea team on the rise.

While Schaub was in the the first team starters before the AJ injury this team was really clicking. When AJ went down it took a big part of our offense with us and at least we really found outthis year what we have with Kevin Walter, who impressed me more as the year wore on. I'm hoping we make a very concerted effort to reward Andre Davis' play this year and make sure he stays giving us a nice receiving corps to work with along with Jones moving into the lineup down the road.

We're Shaky at RB and Might be adressed in FA but I'd much rather go draft someone in the third round.

We are getting older at LT and I'd really prefer we get someone to solidfy that spot with our first pick i nthe draft this year. It's going to be a deep year at LT and at 18 there will be lots of options. I know lots of people keep wishing for a trade down to try and recoup this year's second which we gave up for Matt Schaub. Unfortunately I don't see that happening.

Last year would've been a great year to trade down and we didn't. Instead we got a bright young man at DT whom I think has a tremendous amount of potential. Paired with Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans it has the potential to be that sort of combination on defense that Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, and Brooks in Tampa's dominant Defensive years. We are a bit thin in the secondary and I wouldn't mind a complimentary OLB for DeMeco. I'm not alone in thinking Richard smith isn't the guy that can take this defense to the next level even given more talent.

I'm with PencilNeck on our Center situation. With bringing Alex Gibbs on board this year i know a LOT of us are really excited what he brings to the table and there's rampant speculation about an Oline Shufle.

Overall like I said with some continued smart moves and having a good headcoach on the same page with a young, talented GM Rick Smith we got good things in store this coming year. This is a young team I feel I can get behind because it looks to me like some pieces are falling into place here and next year can be a special year for this no longer fledgling franchise.

ok ok, im a homer yes, but ive never seen such a great evaluation of talent, our team takes character, skill, and hard work all into account when signing guys to our team.... we are on the rise and in MY OPINION, we would have made the playoffs this year if not for the 17 guys on IR. i like matt alot, i just hope gibbs sures up our O line enough to not turn him into david carr... great recieving/TE core and our D should be REDICULOUS if not in 08, better in 09... im siked to be apart of this cuz hey are finally doing things rght, heck beter than right....

Hey Bluestar

The team was a middle of the pack offense that struggled in the red zone at times. The team needs some toughness inside at Center, probably a quality Guard since Fred Weary has a serious 3 way leg break that may or may not heal properly. Our "projected" LT is coming off a year long injury and he may or may not ever make it back...but fingers are crossed. Winston at RT seems to be the one player that isn't injured that is improving steadily. Chester Pitts at LG may have peaked as far as his upside and he is good enough on a "good line" but not the kind of player you want as your "best" lineman.....and at times he is (and he does play at a high level at times...he's just inconsistent). At TE Owen Daniels is not an upper tier TE but he is in the second level of players who is still growing and is a good receiver that runs good routes but isn't a great blocker. Jury is out on Schaub but him and Rosenfels isn't a problem area on the team. I think that Schaub will eventually give us a Chad Pennington type game with a slightly better arm if he can stay uninjured....but that is a big question mark. Andre Johnson is just a beast...plain and simple. Keep him healthy. The other WR's are solid and Jones may be someone to look at for a big year next season. I expect the team to draft a feature back...or find one somewhere.

On defense the team needs a CB, SLB, FS, DE and big fat two gap tackle that is impossible to move for 25 plays due to excessive cheeseburgers (this guy is worthless after play 25 in large part to excessive cheeseburgers as well)....we have too many light slashing DT types and we could use a short yardage type guy to help keep Guards off DeMeco when the field shrinks. DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams are who we think they are....we just need to fill some holes and let those guys continue to grow as players and dominate. Dunta Robinson is the other key player on the defense but he had a catastrophic knee injury and his career is a question mark as well.

Alex Gibbs was brought in to mentor Shanahan just like he mentored Kubiak in Denver. I think this was a brilliant move. This offense will be elite if we can find another lineman and a feature back this off-season. I'm not a big fan of the defensive coaching staff...but it looks like they will get another shot to put things together. To be fair, they have had huge talent holes to deal with...so I'll be patient with that.

This is actually a proven fact. All jokes aside.
excellent post big guy, rep your way

the Texans have a solid core of young players that are going to be around for a long time. The foundation is set, now we are just building on top of it. We need help on the OL (LT and C), we need some defensive backs, and could use a strong young running back. Outside of that we are pretty well set. As for Schaub, I think he will be the next Matt Hasslebeck. Nothing too flashy, but efficient, and in the right situation he can take his team to the Superbowl.

Funny you wrote this, as I did my offseason roadmap yesterday and today that covers a lot of the same territory and comes to many of the same conclusions as you:

Houston Texans Offseason Roadmap (I did the first one for FanHouse, and the other writers will be doing similar discussions of the other teams in the league over the next couple of weeks).

It's written mostly for Texans fans, but provides information to people less familiar with the team too. Already there's some thoughtful comments in there.

Interestingly, the Texans ended up ranked 4th in the entire league in red zone offense for the year.

As for the inbreds of Uranus, here's the proof:

I want to talk about this point more.

This is the point I am making with not knowing WTH Richard Smith's philosophy is on defense. Does he not see the need for an excessive cheeseburger guy? Is he intentionally loading up on smallish light guys in the interior because he wants a fast light line?

Here's the listed weights of the DTs (including IR just to get a sense of what the Texans look for):

Okoye: 302 (probably lighter)
Johnson: 305
Zgonina: 290 (most of that located in his calves)
Maddox: 295
Bulman: 300
Deljuan Robinson: 296
Killings: 310

We don't know what a Richard Smith 4-3 is supposed to look like because he has never run one. But apparently, he likes smallish DTs because these are all the same guy sizewise. I see the need for a big DT, and so do you, but I am sure if he told GM Rick Smith to get him a cheeseburger guy, that guy would have been got.

This is one of the reasons why the Texans struggled against the run and seem to get wore down in the second half of games. (The turnovers and playing from behind probably didn't help either).

This is the concern I have.

You can keep loading up talent on the defensive side of the ball, but if you don't have a coherent philosophy on defense, you don't know what players to acquire.
