The fact that the official was fined doesn't come as a shock to me. What does come as a shock is his pay scale.

The NFL has fined official Jim Quirk a game check -- $8,150 -- for inappropriate contact with Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett on Sunday.

Quirk was summoned to NFL offices Friday to meet with commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson. In determining the penalty, the league took into account previous incidents, including Quirk's contact Dec. 16 with Atlanta Falcons fullback Jason Snelling on a kickoff return.

Goodell has informed Barnett and Packers head coach Mike McCarthy of the punishment. Barnett's agent, Chuck Price, who had planned to file a grievance with the NFL over Quirk's behavior, told ESPN's Chris Mortensen, "This action is more than satisfactory. There is now no reason to pursue a grievance."

Quirk aggressively grabbed Barnett around the neck and pulled him to the ground during Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. McCarthy was critical of Quirk following the incident.

Lets work with that and say they make the same for playoffs (4) and the ProBowl (1) as a regular game (16):

8150 x 21 games = $171,150

Damn - and I thought the IT field in DC was paying well.

It's a long, long process. You actually have to start doing Pop Warner/Pee-wee league and Middle School. After you've done that for a couple of years you can move up to high school. After you've called a set number of highschool games you get to move up to the college ranks and after so many college games you get to go to the pros if you're so inclined.
The thing is until you make it to the pros it's essentially a low paying part time job.

But I did see that Packer game. The Ref getting that guy in a choke-hold was CLASSIC!
