Default Capers' remark about conservative playcalling

Last night during his radio show, Capers was asked repeatedly in many different ways about the playcalling, and the fans focus on playcalling.

His response:

"Playcalling is a little overrated. When plays don't work, especially running plays, for whatever reason, fans are going to think that the playcalling looks conservative."

At the risk of sounding like a Capers apologist, I agree with that statement.

Now, having said that, the 'fan' in me admits that going 3 and out passing the ball is easier to stomach than going 3 and out with a run, run, pass. It just looks like you're trying harder, as illogical as that sounds.

Reading between Capers lines, I get this message. He knows the running game is not performing as he expected it, but there is no choice but to keep trying to run, because if you let the defense know that the running game is being abandoned, then Carr will never get any time to throw, no matter how good the offensive line performs. The running game HAS to perform in order to pass.

when we win, playcalling isn't mentioned , but when we lose, playcalling gets bashed

what gets me, is that Palmer has become the focal point of bashing (and I shake my head at times on what we do), but in all fairness fangio hasn't taken ANY heat. We heard for Palmers head for 2 years WHILE he had a bunch of ROOKIES on the offensive side.. now the defense has 3 rookies starting and no one says a word about getting blown out in 2 out of the last 3 games.

yes we self destructed in the 2nd half, what is hurting us is we can't run the ball and Carr has our longest run from scrimmage. Unbelievable that not ONE of our backs have broke one.. And we have WR's that like to block!.
If I counted right 14 sacks is all we have this season even with Payne and Walker back.

farve threw the ball 50+ times and they didnt have much of a running game. yet they score 13 points in the 4th after abandoning the run.

i think sometimes you can pass to open up the run.

Well, not to sound like a smartass, but when Carr has 14 years experience under his belt, with nearly 50 thousand yards and 365 touchdowns to his credit, then maybe he could get by without a running game. But right now, Carr needs a running game to keep the pressure off.

The running game isn't working period and hasn't pretty much all year. It is just plain stupid to keep calling running plays in the fourth quarter when we obviously need to pass. If Carr throws an int or gets sacked at least we tried instead of just giving in to 3 and out. We gave the Green Bay game away plain and simple. The Texans are masters of playing good teams close and losing it at the end or in OT. Just look at last season. We have to start winning these close games.

Marcus that's a very true statement. Exactly why the Texans keep trying to run the ball. At the same time short passes to the TE & RB despite the excellent WR corps is not a bad way to go, to open up the long ball & run.

I just got done watching the game on my DVR recording. Andre Johnson's last catch came with 7 minuites left in the 3rd quarter.
How do you expect to win games like this when your stud WR is totally eliminated midway through the 3rd? Do you see the Eagles with McNabb going conservative and not throwing to TO?

Why on Earth would you keep running the ball up the middle also? Thats the beef of their D-line. How 'bout a sweep instead of off tackle or up the gut? And what happened to throwing the ball to Miller over the middle a couple of times? You know fake a block and fade into the middle for a pass? Maybe try a little harder. Seriously though I thin it's both O-coach and D-coach that are messing things up this year. Our blitzing scheem needs to be a little more original. And set Babin down and let Peek have a little chance. At least when he's out there he makes things happen. Like blocking a punt.

I thought I was reading one of my posts when I read Marcus. You need a balanced attack or at least the threat of both components if your offense is going to do anything.

Actually, Andre's last catch came at the 6:25 mark of the 4th quarter on the second to last drive. They also threw to him - incomplete-at the 12:22 mark of the 4th.

Default passing to set up the run

To back up Markbeth, you don't need to be Favre, to pass and set up the run! Indy started that system with Manning in his rookie year and look at them now. People repsect that he can ignite them all game, leaving the field as a playground for James. This notion, that running the ball will bring up the safeties is true, when corners can afford to go 1-on-1 with average WR's! NO ONE IN THIS LEAGUE CAN GO ONE ON ONE WITH AJ AND A QUICK RELEASE QB!!! Quick slants will kill a team like that! Capers is covering his butt. What do we have to lose! You score to win the game!

The Myth

Quote:
run, run, pass
when we really only did this 2 out of the last 7 posessions.

the thing that kills us is that the running game stinks and Carrs ability to find the open reciever downfeild stinks. I saw a couple of times he threw it over AJ's head and out of bounds. He doesn't give our very talented recieving core a chance to make a play. It is throw to DD, throw to AJ for 1 yard, or throw it out of bounds. Oh and one long ball to Corey in double coverage.

Actually, since our running game stinks, there have not been many receivers open downfield. This has to do with teams (especially in the GB game) not having to commit as many people to the run. Our receivers are being covered very well. One of the sacks in the GB game was a pure coverage sack.

Also, Carr's accuracy was shaky in the GB game. But, I did see him hit Mark Bruener between the 8 and the 7, and it just bounced off his chest. Maybe, since he has seen very few passes in his direction he couldn't handle the rocket.

Carr's accuracy has been off for the last three games. His delivery is VERY sidearm most of the time and that affects his accuracy. Early in the year he was coming over the top and was right on the money, particularly deep. He has been off target and his completion percentage has declined to just barly over 50% when earlier he was in the 65-70% range. One of the coaches needs to get with him again and get him throwing over the top again.

With the playcalling the Offense still has to mix it up with passing game and running because you gotta keep the opposition from getting comfortable with the next set of play.

Would that fall on Greg Roman (QB coach) or Palmer (coach we ALL know)?

Well, he did have a drop pretty late in the game, though. Can't wait to see you blame Palmer for that, too.

How about Capers having a little more faith in his guys and let them go for it on 4th and 2. Especially with only 2 minutes left to play. Any ***** knows you don't give Farve the ball with 2 minutes left. That is why we have the 2 minute offense , hello. Just venting no offense.

i do understand that a running game would help but we dont have one. these teams arent even playing the run and they are stoping us. so i think our best chance of winning would be to pass early when we have at least a little bit of suprise rather than waiting untill later in the game when we are down and have to pass.

in the rare case when we have a lead i think we should do something different than what we have done, since what we are doing doesnt work. in 2+ years we have not had one blowout but we have lost at least 2 or 3 games where we had a double digit lead. that tells me that we are not doing something right. reasonable people try something then if it doesnt work they try something else. i think next time we get a big lead it would be a good time to try something different.

Heard today that Capers estimates that 25% of the called plays are audibled by Carr at the line of scrimmage. This includes often call pass plays becoming Davis left, Davis right, Davis up the middle. Thats 1 out of every 4 plays called by Palmer, being changed by Carr.
