Alternates go when one of the other guys cancels. Reserves don't start but still make the trip and get to play. I think VY made it in as an alternate last year.

If they just don't feel like playing (say, they've been there 7 times already)

So, what are the odds that Mario does go? Does anyone think that any of the three DEs ahead of him will not want to go?

So, are Jared Allen, Kyle Vanden Bosch, or Jason Taylor injured or nursing any injuries?

At this point I'd rather not see Mario Williams go to the Pro Bowl. All this alternate stuff sounds like a backdoor way. I'd rather see him go next year, if he plays well enough, when he go can as a Pro Bowl starter. But if he does somehow manage to sneak in this year I'll be happy for him because he definitely deserved to go this year.

I think chances are actually pretty good that Mario will go to Hawaii. It's not unusual at all that a player declines to play in the Pro Bowl. Think about it. The game is meaningless and you're risking your health and future potential income by getting on that field.
Someone like Jason Taylor who really has nothing to prove at this stage of his career could very easily opt not to go. |

With none of those guys likely making the play-offs, I don't see any passing on the trip to Hawaii.

Seems to me (and this is just me and my faulty memory talking) I remember that the coaches who wind up coaching either team (the coaches who lose the championship game from either conference) also have the option of choosing one player to come along.
Can anyone either verify or refute? |

So in this case the Patriots lost to the Colts. So, who didn't make it from the Patriots and deserves it? How about Wes Welker.

You are correct. I'm sure personal relationships weigh heavily in those decisions. But with someone like Mario just exploding in production the last quarter of the season, the numbers almost demand that a coach choose him.
