Default 2007-2008 BOWL PLAYOFF CHAMPIONSHIP & Bowl Invitational

The following is simply for kicks and giggles.
It is what IMHO, would be the solution to getting a playoff system working for D1-A (aka Bowl Subdivision) College Football AND keeping the Bowls all at the same time.

What follows is a 16 team playoff to determine the national champion of college football. I've played with this for a few years now, and had been just taking the top 16 ranked teams to play in this tournament. In an effort to keep late season regular season games meaningful, especially for the higher ranked teams, I have come around on the theory of going with automatic bids for each conference champion, which would leave room for 5 at-large bids. This gives the top teams incentive to try and remain a top team to insure they get an easier go of it against a MAC champion or Sun Belt champion, etc. essentially giving those top teams an almost "bye" in the 1st round of this playoff.

For the purpose of this exercise, the teams will still be seeded by their positions in the BCS standings, and the top 5 non conference champions in those standings will get the at-large invites.

Also the highest seed will be rewarded more by getting to choose which of the 8 1st round bowls they want to play in, as well as the time slot from the 8 available over the 3 days the first round is played. They also get to choose from the 4 bowls in the 2nd round, and the 2 bowls in the 3rd round.

Example: Ohio State is #1, so they choose the closest bowl to them, the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, they choose the prime time slot, Saturday night at 7:00 pm, they choose to go to the Fiesta Bowl in the 2nd round, and Rose Bowl in the Semis. And that will be the setup whether Ohio State wins or not.

Then the #2 team does the same thing, picking from the remaining 7 bowls available in the 1st round, the remaining 3 from the 2nd, and they'll have to take the Orange Bowl in the 3rd as it's the only one left. Then the #3 team picks their bowls from the remaining available and so on. So LSU tries to stay close to home by picking the Texas Bowl in the 1st and Cotton Bowl in the 2nd. #3 Virginia Tech stays on the east coast with the Meineke Car Care in Charlotte and Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, and so on.

Again, this is basically for my amusement since we all know nothing like this is close to happening. I know there's now a system floating around similar to this where the first round is played on-campus of the higher seeds in the first round, and I'm good with that. My proposal just tries to keep the bowls in play. Personally, I really don't care where they'd play these games, just play them.

Teams in BOLD are matchups if there were this playoff. In the 2nd round on, I'm randomly choosing who advances based on nothing. Feel free to mix and match your own matchups.

Teams in (italics) are the actual bowl matchups this season.

And in an effort to keep the rest of the bowls alive, here's the Bowl Invitational playoff, similar to the NIT Tournament in college basketball, where the 2 teams to make it to the championship in this bracket, get rewarded with a trip to Hawaii.

The choosing of bowls by the top seeds works the same way. These teams are pretty much the next 16 in line in the BCS standings who are not in the championship tournament.

Default Re: 2007-2008 BOWL PLAYOFF CHAMPIONSHIP & Bowl Invitational

you can't have schools picking where they want to go. that'll never happen.

16 teams.

the 6 BCS conference winners receive an automatic bid.

the 10 remaining teams are chosen based on their ranking in the BCS.

the top 8 teams play the first round at home. the seeding is typical 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc.

the winners of these games become eligible to be chosen by the BCS bowls.

the losers of these games become eligible to be chosen by the "lesser" big bowls (Cotton, Gator, Capital One, Outback).

the rotation for choosing teams to play in the BCS bowls changes every year.

the winners of the BCS bowl games are then shipped off to a final four scenario at the national championship location, which would be New Orleans this year.

Hawaii is not eligible for title shot as only undefeated team, which I understand. Yet, why is their QB eligible for Heisman? A weak schedule should keep him out of that using same logic.

Good point.

All is not fair in the College BCS system.

For what ever reason....Hawaii can't get anyone to play them. The seven hour difference may be part of it. I think their fan's behvior is a larger part of it. Texas cancelled a home and home with them a while back. Come to think of it it might of been the first thing Mac Brown did when he came in. Now he did schedule Ohio St. home and home. So he wasn't running from the rainbow warriors. I mean there is no love lost between Texas and Arkansas. However, I didn't hear of any razor backs getting the hell beat out of them after Matt Jones' group upset them a couple of years ago. Makes a difference.

June Jones doesn't like the treament...he's going to have to remedy the reputation. Maybe do what the eagles do and have a judge at the stadium ?
Texas is enjoying the Rice game just fine. What is Hawaii going to do to make Texas drop that game, travell into that prison yard and play out of their bio rhythm ? Apperantly it wasn't worth it to Mac Brown last time. Undefeted or not the SO schedule killed them. As it should have.

Bottom line is you're going to have to give 119 indivdual college presidents something for them to give up what they have. The BCS was estblished to protect the big daugs. It's going to take a whole bunch of cooperation and MONEY to make them give up the BCS. He who has the gold rules. Always has. Always will. Bowls mean money. They ain't going to give that up for anything.

first thing you do..if a coach leaves all player commitments are off. Coach gets into trouble...all agreements are off. allow free movement among the palers, hit them in their pocket books, they will restructure the system. But be careful what you ask for. Know what I mean ?

If nobody wants to go to Hawaii then they are just gonna have to go play the top teams on the road.

Or they can keep scheduling cupcakes at home.

They aren't USC or LSU. They will have to beat a top team to get respect & they will have to do it on the road.

i wonder how many people realize that Hawaii's first game next year is at Florida.

they're TRYING to play tough teams. it's not easy though. there's so many different scheduling problems, especially for a team like Hawaii, who doesn't have a lot of money tied up in their athletics program. quick fun fact: Hawaii has one of the smallest budgets of any Division 1A school for recruiting, and they will sign players that play stateside that they've never even seen play, because they can't afford to go scout them.

I do. That's why I'm questioning June Jones' decison to open his mouth about Tim Tebow's passing abilities.

Mr Jones does attract the spot light. Anyone think U of Houston could afford him?
