Default Kevin Smith-UCF

Quote:
Such is life at Central Florida for Kevin Smith, who has quietly put together one of the best seasons for a running back in college football history.

He has run for 2,164 yards this season, fourth-best in NCAA history, and still has two games to play. The junior has 26 touchdowns, a 300-yard game and five more with at least 200 yards. At the rate he's going, only Barry Sanders' 2,628 yards in 1989 will stand ahead of Smith's total this season.

Smith gets to add to those totals Saturday in the Conference USA championship against Tulsa.

Playing in C-USA, at one of those 'other' Florida schools, the hype that usually goes to players with Smith's abilities and statistics has eluded him. He's got no shot at the Heisman Trophy and didn't even make the final cut for the Doak Walker Award, despite putting up better numbers than the finalists: Michigan's Mike Hart, Arkansas' Darren McFadden and Rutgers' Ray Rice. Earlier this week, only two reporters were waiting to interview Smith after practice.
Quote:
Smith has done little to draw attention to himself. Spare with self-promotion, he gets good grades, keeps his head down and gushes about the offensive line. The junior believably insists he's not sure he'll skip his senior season for the NFL draft, and won't without O'Leary's blessing.

"It's the week of the (Conference USA) championship," Smith said. "Worrying about whether I'm going to be here next year is the last thing that should be on my mind."

I haven't seen the guy play, just the highlights

He now has 2,448 yards and 29 touchdowns because of his 284 yard 4 TD game against Tulsa.

And UCF is now quietly 10-3 & conference champs.

Their only losses are to Texas (who was ranked 6) by 3.

At USF (who was ranked 5) by *cough* 52.

at ECU (6-2 conf. record) by 14.

and he looked amazing against USF for the one drive they actually let him run the ball. completely tearing up the defense with ease. then they went away from him and stuck with their awful QB-rotation, which produced comical turnovers. then it became too ridiculous to keep running him.

Quote:
But here in Orlando, with numbers just as staggering as those of his state neighbor, UCF running back Kevin Smith has had a quiet week.

Smith ended the regular season with 2,448 rushing yards, just 180 yards shy of Barry Sanders' all-time single-season record. Yet Smith, who won't join Tebow in New York as a Heisman finalist, was without much Heisman hype and isn't even a finalist for any of the heavy hardware at tonight's College Football Awards Show.

I'll buy that. I'll be p$$ed if they take him over the CB or dancing bear o-lineman. They could make a worse pick. I don't know the guy just see the interviews, and stuff...I like him. He reminds me in his attitude a lot like Levi Brown. Good down to earth kid who is not defined only by his tallent. We could do lot worse. It's amazing at his size how strong he is.

It seems criminal to me that he wasn't even a finalist for the Doak Walker Award.

He reminds me of Warrick Dunn a bit. Strong legs, breaks arm tackles. Fast enough.

i go to UCF and i see him around campus all the time... he's not as fast as you guys think, i think he'll clock around a 4.6 at the combine. however, he is a very smart runner, has great patience, and runs tough.

still, i'm not entirely sold on him at the next level.

there you go guys a very "nice" College back

in the NFL he could be a very "nice" system RB & there's nothing to be ashamed or dishonored about that as a matter of fact for a team that needs a good young system back like the Seahawks (similar to what the Colts did with Addai) select him late 1st rd.

you might be right, for now I'm sticking w/Top 10 then revisit after the BCS game. maybe Yankee_In_Texas has some views on the subject................

can't say I was surprised by the outrage on these boards when I mocked him as the #11 selection of the Houston Texans, they just didn't know he was (in that scenero) the bpa

I really don't think he is that high a pick. He may go higher if he tests and works out as a 3-4 OLB, but he isn't that high a pick as a DE. He is what we need as a DE, but he isn't worth top 15 as a DE.
