The Texans are gathering information and will likely release a statement today. I suggest holding off judging until we know what the facts are.

But what I do know is that "felony evading arrest" sounds really really bad but doesn't necessarily mean a huge high speed police chase. I can think of at least 4 cases that my husband has dealt with involving HPD over the years where the person misunderstood the officer and didn't realize that they were not free to go. Then they drove off, and the police went after them, then they pulled over. No intent to flee a known detention, no case.

Sometimes with stuff that seems totally stupid for a guy to do (run away from a silly ticket), there is more to it. We have only heard the police version of the facts.

Police officers aren't interested in whatever your story is. Like "hey I didn't realize I was being ticketed. You just left." They are interested in doing their job and not getting killed doing their job. So misunderstandings happen all the time.

I'm interested to know the story too TC. A month ago I went golfing with my Brother in laws. On the way back there was an accident at 288 right before downtown. I was getting on the entrance ramp pretty quickly..it passed right by the accident. the car in front of me stopped suddenly and I went into the shoulder to go around and avoid him. There were cops everywhere. Some cop with an attitude pulled me over and started screaming at me about "who do I think I am", "do you think you are better than everyone else," "you are going to sit here on the shoulder until I tell you you can leave," "stop talking, your lying," "how do you like my porno stache"(ok, made up). I tried talking..didn't work. So we sat. He rode off 10 minutes late...while my car made people even slow down more. Another cop made me wait longer..even though the other guy told me I could leave when he was "out of sight." Eventually I got to leave....but I hate cops more than when I hated cops before. It was a complete power trip on something I just made a mistake on because of traffic. I didn't get mouthy besides trying to explain myself. I didn't do something dumb like pull the "I'm an attorney" b.s. they hate so much. So I can see the mix ups. My friends at the DAs office probably would give me the needle though

I would have thought the officer would have said something like "Where the hell do you think you are going?" Pitts would reply "Oh, you meant for me to stay there and get a ticket? Sorry. I misunderstood. I'll take the ticket now."

Must have been a little more to it at least in the officer's mind. I am thinking Chester looked over his shoulder and saw something big trying to run over him and thought "There's that darn Ron Dayne again. Guess I better pull over and get out of the way."

just an easy 'comeback' for some of the less-informed. it seems like there is something bred in these Houstonians where they feel they are the little sister of Dallas and have to hate anything with a Dallas brand on it.

I can understand hating the Mavs because theya re the ROckets rival, but the Cowboys are not even remotely a Texans rival. As a matter of fact, I consider myself a Texan before I consider myself a Houstonian and I support almost all Texas sports teams or Texas interests...except the Spurs because now they have more championships than the Rox.

If the Cowboys play the Texans, I cheer for the TExans but other than that I support the Cowboys to win because I am a Texan first and foremost.

If the officer has to stop you again, you are going to get an evading ticket.

Police officers have a difficult job. They want to do their work and they want to not get killed doing their work. They don't want to be involved in a debate society on the side of the road or hear your explanation and certainly doing want to drive after guys they already stopped.

Misunderstandings happen all the time at traffic stops. Police officers are used to doing what they do, but drivers aren't accustomed to being stopped and if the directions to you aren't clear, you might goof up. See e.g. Utah Ride the Taser guy as an extreme example of a traffic stop gone bad by both officer and driver.

Here's my write up, with map, law stuff, speculation about this sort of fact situation (daytime driving off from a traffic stop where the police officer leaves to do something else is often a misunderstanding):

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/...-traffic-tick/

As I recall, aren't there a bunch of fast food restaurants that way. Maybe he was just really hungry.

Chester is a friend of mine, he's a good upstanding guy. His Dad is a detective back in Cali. He's mindful and respectful of law enforcement. He's also mindful of his reputation in the community. I guarantee you, and I haven't talked to him yet this morning, that he misunderstood the situation and thought he was clear to leave and strolled off. Supposedly he pulled back over a half mile later which if he was trying to get away he wouldn't have stopped that quick. By the time the cops got back in their cars and ran him back down a half mile or so isn't a "chase". Chester is a very intelligent guy and I in no way see that he would have done anything intentional to defy law enforcement. He's not STUPID like some above posters have said,,,I bet when it comes out it was all a big misunderstanding,,,

Chester has always come across as a bright guy. A half a mile is a 3 min run for some...that's not a high speed chase.

I reminded someone here in my office about Pitts' father being a detective and also reminded him that Pitts' is an intelligent person - considering he went to a specialized high school for Math and Science.

I agree with you that at the end of the day, it will come out that it was a huge misunderstanding.
