Default 2006 Draft Top 3

After a season and a half now of watching the top 3 picks in the 2006 draft, I think the Texans got it right. Like everyone else, I was livid when they selected Mario over Vince AND Reggie. But the NFL has caught on to Young and Bush, while teams are having more and more trouble handling Williams. Bush can't run between the tackles, and you can stop Vince by playing Cover 2 and stacking 7 or 8 in the box. Double team Mario, and you're going to pay.

Yeah, we got it right.

While none of the big three are the best thing to exit the 2006 draft, Williams is definately the best of those three. Bush is probably going to be declared a bust in another year or so and Young is well on his way. Williams is what he is, a solid DE.

I wasnt. I was dancing.

I saw Bush for what he was & I just wanted anybody but him. VY, Mario, Ferguson, Hawk...I didnt really care.

I know that sounds bad, but Bush looked like a trap pick & I'm just glad the Texans avoided him.

He'll be good one day. But as a WR, not a RB.

As good of a game he had, he just needs to play like it every week. So I want to see this Mario come out and pressure Anderson. So consistency is still key for me.

This is by far my favorite game in Texans history. I've been looking forward to it ever since the 06 draft and the fact that Williams stepped up to the plate when all the attention was on him was icing on the cake. We dominated this game today, the scoreboard doesn't tell the whole story. The fact that we basically had our way with the Saints WITHOUT Dunta Robinson is simply amazing, I love this win!!!

How sweet it is!!!

Default "Hey Jared!"

Get my boy Ronnie a Subway commercial.....

Ron Dayne - 115 All Purpose Yards

Reggie Bush - 104 All Purpose Yards

As I watched all the sports tickers on TV run through the scores and stats, I'm still amazed to see that all the other teams RB's show just their run yardage but Bush is always listed with his "all purpose yards". It's like they have to prop up his stats to make him look better. If I see him in another commercial I'm gonna puke.

Had to work today and only caught a few minutes of the 3rd quarter. But I did see Mario come off right end, lower his shoulder and literally knocked the O lineman off his feet and broke up the play. Can someone locate the video of that play and post it?

Default 2006 Draft top 3

Ok lets look OBJECTIVELY at the top 3. Where they are today and who should have gone where. By objectively I mean Texas fans, extend all 5 fingers on each hand and make a fist then repeat... you can do that without your blood turning from Orange to red. Guys who wanted Williams, you don't have to defend him any more... he's growing up. And if there are any Saints lurkers still left... Bush is a great kid but he's just that... a Kid.

Ok the hot topic of today is Bush. As funny as it is to say, I'm going to defend Reggie. Was he over hyped? Sure. Is he a bust? I don't really think so. I can think of a guy in Philly who had to learn to run the ball. Bush is kind of like a young version of Brian Westbrook. Remember the knock on him for years was he couldn't run between the tackles. He had to bulk up and Bush will get stronger. We forget the kid is only 22 years old. He doesn't have his man strength yet. When he gets it, this will be a different story. Oh and I think he's farther from his potential than any player taken at the RB spot in his draft, but I still think he has the best potential. Its fun to point and laugh, but if the ever does reach his potential, that will be scary.

We are quick to say Mario needs time to develop and he does. All three of the top picks that year are still kids playing a man's game. We forget how young these kids are. The one I would be most concerned with honestly, VY. I know he's still being touted as "The One". I know he doesn't have many weapons to work with. I know his team is winning, but mentally I haven't seen much progression in his game. He still looks like the VY at UT. I'm not saying he won't progress but mental progression is something you'd like to see from a QB. There has never been a question if he can do it physically. He doesn't seem to have improved his touch either.

Mario is learning. He is excellent against the run but I think he's being used wrong. Its obvious he either needs to stand up, or be playing on the left side. I sometimes wonder if we're misusing him or trying to cover for the lack of ability for our OLBs to play the run. I think he'll develop into a nice player.

Overall I don't know if any of the 3 were the best player in the draft. I'd say they all have amazing potential and you really can't knock anyone for taking any of them. Enough of the "our guy is better than theirs"... lets just worry about who we're playing next

mario looked the better player on Sunday...that is for sure.

mario just needs to be able to bring that intensity every week and not just excel when against 2nd string Offensive Tackles. but as a Texans fan, you take the victories when you can and Mario vindicated himself on Sunday and presented a good argument on his abilities and worth in comparison to Bush.

Bush is a good football player but I just don't know if he is tough enough to be a star in this league. Him going in the fetal position late in the game was one of the most pathetic moves I have ever seen on a National Football League field. Even 3rd string Quarterbacks show more cajones than that. Just embarassing primadonna behavior and makes me truly question whether he has what it takes.

Mario Williams actually worked at a Subway. He said he liked the job because he could eat enough food that way.

Recently, I wrote about the Chronicle draft redo:

The 2006 NFL Redraft: Who's Your Pick?

You know, after looking at it some, I'm not sure anyone is worth the first pick money. Marketingwise, VY would have been a nice short term pick because there are a bunch of 7 year olds in Houston trying to figure out what NFL player to idolize.

Fitwise, I'm not sure that VY would have been a good fit with Kubiak, but you never know. Also, VY as a Texans would have instantly become the most powerful figure in sports. That's a dangerous thing if that power comes before NFL performance--you know, if he doesn't succeed it isn't his fault, it's his coaches. And if there are already whispers about him and his maturity level, do you think it would be any easier to control him in Houston?

In any event, your comment about how young they are is well taken. Mario Williams came out of school not only as a junior, but a true junior. He was so physically gifted that I think that his technique lagged due to coaches just trying to get him on the field as much and as fast as possible, technique be damned.

I like Mario's upside assuming he stays healthy. He has a learning attitude with his coaches and doesn't have a big head. (If anything, he needs to develop more confidence).

I think the way he is being used is partially a response to where Anthony Weaver (and his big contract) can play.
