Default Texans to honor Luv Ya Blue era before Bucs game

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5311061.html

Quote:
If you were a fan of the Oilers' Luv Ya Blue era, don't miss the events the Texans have planned surrounding their Dec. 9 game against Tampa Bay at Reliant Stadium.

As part of their annual NFL alumni weekend, the Texans are bringing back former Oilers such as Bum Phillips, Dan Pastorini, Elvin Bethea, Gregg Bingham, Kenny Burrough, Mike Renfro, Curley Culp, Mike Barber, Robert Brazile, Vernon Perry, Ed Biles, Greg Sampson, Conway Hayman, Ronnie Coleman, Steve Kiner, Andy Dorris, C.L. Whittington and many more.
Quote:
On Saturday, the day before the game, the Luv Ya Blue Oilers will be among the former NFL players the Texans are honoring at their Texans' Taste of Victory event.

Some of Houston's best restaurants will set up at the team's Methodist Training Center, where fans can eat and mingle with some of the best players in the city's pro football history.

It's about time they did this. I felt they should have done this during the first season.

Too bad Earl can't be there. After meeting him a couple of weeks ago it is no surprise that he wouldn't make the trip down there due to his declining health. Hopefully the Texans do something to honor him.

BTW, they should bring in players from the Run and Shoot era also. That era to me was as equally special.

I wasn't living in Houston while the Oilers were still here (and if I was, I'd probably be to young to remember much of them anyway), but I think it's a great idea. Better late than never IMO.

I just hope that when they do honor them during the game it's better than that lame ceremony they had last season where they brought a bunch of former players onto the field, but barely even introduced them before they walked them off.

I posted this on our board too, for your locals who... uh... ahem... still follow the franchise. Didn't know how to post that without raising any ire but can't see a way around it, sorry.

I think it's great the Texans are doing this and it will mean so much more there than here. I hope you all have a great time going down memory lane!

Titans are not the Oilers. Nice try. There are similarities: owner, colors, Jeff Fisher (about the only redeeming value).

And if you doubt the prickdom that is Bud Adams, consider that he blocked the Houston expansion franchise from using the name "Oilers." Great guy, Bud. Wish him the best.

But it is cool that you guys dig the Oilers. Good on ya, there.

Actually, rickyb, whether we like it or not the Titans are the Oilers. When Bud Adams took his team to Memphis, and then finally to Nashville he retained the rights to not only the name Oilers, but also their entire statistical history as well. This is quite the opposite of what happened when Art Modell moved his team from Cleveland to Baltimore. The city of Cleveland retained the rights and all of the statistical history of the Browns while Modell retained the organization that was formerly the Browns, in otherwords the coaches, players, and front office, but all the statistcal history was starting over as if they were an expansion franchise. I hope this helps to clarify things a little better for you.

The good thing is that ALL of these guys were HOUSTON Oilers, Not Tennessee Oilers, nor Tennessee Titans.

I stilll love O.A. "Bum" Phillips' feelings on the matter..

Bill, I'm a huge fan of Bum. What are his feelings? (I honestly don't know.)

Others...
Back to the earlier comment --- there is no way anyone is going to convince me that the Titans are the Oilers. I do not care one whit about statistical history and naming rights. The Oilers are a Houston team. If anyone in the great state of Tennessee has their Luv Ya Blue pom-poms, or any type of recording of any Oiler MNF game, or any signed memorabilia from any one of Carl Mauck, Dan Pastorini, or Earl the Pearl, then they can claim to be an Oilers fan, and I would support them in that.

But, nope, sorry. Nashville ain't Houston, and the Tacks ain't the Oilers. Not then. Certainly not now. Trying to convince me otherwise is like trying to convince me my favorite color is green.

RickiB, I will call you francis, so lighten up Francis, Bud Adams is the Oilers Big Toe and so what if it is ridden with Toe Jam and athletes Foot. He Took our oilers away and will now forever be the enemy. He has tried to wash the oilers from his franchise but unfortunately for him you cannot wash away Hall of Famers and greatness. He did put those said Hall of Famers in a Teeton Display though, Which is just down right Wrong.

It is the same franchise from a legal point of view.

And while the franchise holds the rights of the records, the fans of Houston hold the memories, which are far more valuable, IMO.

Every time a Titan breaks a franchise record, Tennessee fans get to be reminded of the fact they have an owner who is heartless and holds money in higher regard than fans or history. They get to be reminded of stealing a team and seeing records that have absolutely no value to them at all, because there is no memory of it.

Sure, the Oilers morphed into the Titans, much in the same way that Sméagol became Gollum. But it is only on paper, and they did not retain the soul of the team. Luv Ya Blue and run & shoot players were OILERS and have absolutely no connection to the Tennessee Titans, by their own admittance.

Houston should celebrate our pro football history, and share our happy memories with the players that we all grew up loving and rooting for. Titans fans won't do it, simply because these players mean nothing to them.

Sorry Rickyb, I hadn't noticed your question before. Anyway, 'Bum' has shown his animosity towards the Dud, and had been quoted as saying "I am a Houston Oiler...." when asked to attend some function in Nashville. Pretty sure Earl has the same feelings towards Dud also.

Awesome, thanks. The day he fired Bum was the day Bud made The List.

Thumbs up Re: Texans to honor Luv Ya Blue era before Bucs game

Classy move by the Texans. This is good to hear. I was wondering if they would do this. My fondest memory of the "Luv Ya Blue" era was Vernon Perry's 4 interceptions against San Diego in the playoffs.

This is off-topic, but I was thinking about that game when I saw a replay of the 1977 Grey Cup game when Vernon Perry got 2 interceptions. He should've had a touchdown, but he was tackled at the 5. He also got a roughing penalty lol. Not really his fault-the field was a sheet of ice & he was tackling a player when they both slid out of bounds & he completed his tackle.

And apologies to the Titans fan. I totally misread this thread early on, as I clearly must have been on my 2nd crown and coke.

In any event, I am STOKED that the Texans franchise are doing the Luv Ya Blue honor thing, obviously. And kudos to DB who just summed up the values of memories. There is the rub, right there.

Will any of the players meander around the tailgating area before the game by any chance? Be cool if we could find a way to invite some of them to hang with us.

I thought the ceremony at halftime was kinda lame...again. Do they really have to do that dumb competition for the kids every single week? They could have just not done it today to give the Luv Ya Blue guys some more props.
