Default Maybe the Texans should skip the combine this year

Wouldn't it be great if we chose a player based on skill, talent, heart, intelligence, and *gasp* game tape? Is anyone else sick of players stocks taking HUGE jumps based on workouts?

Calvin Johnson hasn't done much yet this year
Vernon Davis has done almost as little
Williams is a big no show
Reggie Bush has done little

I mean, there comes a time when you have to say "instead of the guy who runs a 4.3 40 without his pads, I want the guy who plays like an NFL player and has a strong desire to win"

Calvin Johnson hasn't done much yet this year
Year Team G Rec Yds Avg Yds/G Long TD
2007 Detroit Lions 6 15 273 18.2 45.5 39 2

Jacoby Jones
2007 Houston Texans 6 13 121 9.3 20.2 26 0

For a player with a hurt back, Johnson numbers are not bad, and remember the Lions are throwing to 2 other receivers also. Calvin Johnson was drafted on his football tape, not his combine numbers.

Say CJ was drafted that high for his workout numbers is foolish. What Johnson did on the field has not been seen at the college level in a long time, and it won't be seen again for a while either. Why don't you say the same thing about AD? He put up freakish numbers at his workouts.

Also, every player you chose to pick on with the exception of Bush has had to deal with fairly significant injuries that have held them back on the field. Mario with his foot. Davis was down for a while with something. CJ with his back this year. Let the players play and grow. You are asking guys who can barely drink to step into a league of men and impact the game right away. It doesn't happen all the time. Let players play, and lighten your instant expectations.

seems to me just like the actual draft itself its become more media friendly for folks like us that can't get enough football even more so when the season is finished. teams pretty much have all their scouting material put together anyhow by that time, they just like to get one last look to confirm any questions they may have before the war room makes their final assesments

Kind of Ironic that Reggie Bush would be the one that hasn't had any sort of major injury...I woulda thought he'd be the first.

While I agree with you that these guys have been hurt, CJ is just about as perfect a nfl prospec as you could have seen, and that they need more time before we're too harsh on them....I think the main thing gtexan is getting at is that more recently the combine seems like it has become the be all end all of prospects.

Hopefully this is just to the general public, espn, and other various sports writers/fanatics....but players are being pushed down because they ran a 4.4 instead of a 4.35...other players are shooting up boards b/c they ran a 4.39 while another guy with clearly a better resume and fooball smarts ran a 4.45. It even goes on with OL...one guy benches 36 while another benches 32 times...and people go crazy

It seems some draft picks are made because of these 'combine' numbers and not strictly game film, work ethic, character, etc. Heck, its a lot easier to scout these players when they are all together doing the same thing for one day....instead of watching film after film on all sorts of prospects.

While I think the combine is VERY important...I think the media has blown it out of proportion as has the casual sports fan...we pray that our own Texans take it for what its worth and nothing more...

Johnson is a sick freak. He has had trouble with injuries, and this is his first year. He will easily be one of the league's top recievers soon.

I do agree though, game tape is just as important.

it's ironic that you chose those guys for your example as to why the combine should be eliminated since those guys were top 10 locks long before the combine took place.

the combine is just another piece of the puzzle. fact is, teams want the fastest, strongest, and most athletic players on the field at all times. even if they do have some flaws in their game, most coaches think they can coach anyone up to be a good player in the NFL. so it's no surprise that the best athletes are generally drafted highest. oh, and by the way, they usually end up really good.

oh, and Calvin Johnson has been awesome this year.

Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush weren't "combine" guys. They walked into the combine at the top of the board. Williams was the top D guy prior to the combine as well, right or wrong on that. The only guy in that group who substantially moved was Davis and he has been hampered by injuries and poor QB play.

Who didn't stand out at one thing at the combine but put up combined numbers that were elite. Prisco has a metric for measuring players and Demeco was exceedingly high based on his combine. Of course what is most important for Demeco is his football smarts--something which can't be measured.

You cannot skip the combine, simply because it's the only plave you get to interview all the players you are intereseted in and you get to have NFL doctors go over them.

If you want to deemphazie the numbers generated from the combine I'd be ok with that.

Mr '08. If he makes the third and smith and our scouts like the guy, You take him. It's that simple. Guys that big running that fast, you take the chance on.
They don't grow on trees and when you get a shot at one you take the guy.
