Good Coaches?

So.. anyone know of any good coaches we might pick up? Particularly a defensive coordinator or Offensive coordinator?

We have talent, but we arent using it right.. bottom line. Honestly I see us moving in a direction that really just doesnt seem fitting for us :P. We are becoming a finesse team.. focused on outsmarting other teams. When I think this city would more easily embrace a smashmouth football team.

So.. any coaches out there that might move us in that direction :P

Nick Saban fits that bill imo. Not sure if he wants to make the jump yet. Stoops might also work. I think Capers is a fine and classy man, but his coaching leaves alot to be desired imo. We need a fresh approach, and a coach set on proving he belongs on the pro level. The other possibility would be a good quality assistant, such as Charlie Weiss or Romeo Cronell (sp?) at NE.

Saban has a shot at the pro's and failed, and Stoops is to smart to not have noticed that very few coaches have succesfully made the transition form college to pros since teh salary cap was put into place. And if you want NE's coordinators, be ready to fight for them and be equally ready to wait till the Superbowl to be able to interview them.

And that's only if you think the coaches are the problem.

As a PSL and season ticket holder for 3 years I must say that this was about as embarrassing as it gets. From the minute the offense walked onto the field they looked to have no desire to even be playing. The play selection (2 runs and a pass) did not convert to first downs except via penalty. The decisions to challenge rulings on the field was ridiculous and a waste of time. Who is looking at the replays up in the booth - curious George? The offensive line had no answer whatsoever for anything the Colts were doing and they looked like a bunch of h.s. kids playing against pros! David looked like he was completely misreading the defense, especially on that ill-advised interception in the end zone.

Yeah, yeah, I know, they'll play better against the Packers on Sunday and I do believe that. But I've got to say that the game against Indy showed a complete lack of heart. This ranks right up there as a complete debacle just like San Diego in year one and Cincinnati in year two. Seems like each year we have a complete blowout and the Texans remember they are an expansion team. I admit that Manning is a machine that is hard to stop but the d-backs were completely outplayed in every aspect and what makes it worse is that they were worked by the likes of a little guy like Stokley.

Dom needs to stop writing notes and start paying attention to what is going on in front of him.

That's what I was referring to - bringing them here as the head coach. After yesterday, I am ready to toss Capers overboard. What the heyel was that first half coaching performance? He was out to lunch.

Im personally not sour towards capers yet. Ill give him his 5 years.. but he needs new help.

Yeah, give Capers the rest of the year to resolve this before we discuss possible replacements. And remember that if a coaching change is in the works this offseason (which I seriously doubt), we'll have to compete with Miami, who's already opening "unofficial" back channels to some people, I'm sure. Down here, though, most of the talk is about Saban taking the Dolphins' job.

Wonder where Wannstedt will land? He's not a bad defensive coordinator, you know. He'll just never be an NFL head coach again.

I don't care who we pick up as long as its someone else sometime in the future. I can't stand the coaching style of just staying around in games and running a 3-4 when you don't have the personal to do it. I'm still just alittle angry.

we have the personel for the 3-4. I just dont like the way we run it. i like the way pittsburgh runs it.

I think we need a new D coordinator.. and id really like a more open minded O coordinator as well. I just dont think we are playing to our strengths there.

The Texans are without a doubt a finesse team. That is the kind of team that fits the Texans personel and it seems that it was being built up that way from the start. However there is nothing wrong with that. The fans in Texans love Carr and they love AJ it seems, so let this team air it out and count more on execution.

The Texans are 4-5 and are on track for 7-9.

4 wins the first year
5 wins the second year
7 wins the third year

Let's fire the coach and start over.

Good point AJ - thanks for some sense. The worst thing you want to do is get on the coaching go round. In the NFL it takes 3 to 4 years to put all your offense and defense togehter. Anytime you hire a new staff you go back to the bottom of the hill unless you have exceptionally talented and very experienced players (such as Tampa Bay when Gruden game over) On the other hand, look at Cleveland, they were making progress with Chris Palmer, lost Patience and hired the big time college guy. Ever siince this move they have stumbled and fallen. There are plenty of others examples also.


Grid - Just out of curiousity, what does a smash mouth football team with an open mined offensive coordinator mean ? I assume smash mouth goes with defense since smash mouth and open minded offense do not go together. If you want smash mouth defense and open mined offense you could always try to recruit Kevin Gilbride and Buddy Ryan back to town. That fits that the description pretty well

Lucky I stand corrected. But it still stands that in the years since the slary cap no college coach has enterd teh NFL and done well, and I don;t think Saban will be the first. Coaching the pro's is a totally different animal than college.

But what does that mean? Unless the coach is also responsible for FA signings and such, why would a college coach be at a disadvantage due to the salary cap. Here is a list off the top of my head of the coaches who've come straight from college in the past 10 or so years.

Barry Switzer (did win a Super Bowl)
Rich Brooks
Steve Mariucci (who has been pretty good if you ask me)
Mike Riley
Butch Davis
Steve Spurrier

To my knowledge, only Davis has had final say on roster matters. The salary cap/college coach relationship seems more like a coincidence than a trend. Especially when there were college coaches who succeeded in the NFL just prior to that time, such as Jimmy Johnson, Bobby Ross, & Dennis Green. At some point, a college coach will come into the NFL and win. It could be Saban, who knows? With the dwindling amount of teams running option offenses in college, the NFL & college football have never been closer in style.

Having said all of that...I still don't believe the Texans will fire Dom Capers any time soon and hire Nick Saban. Or anyone else.

On a side note, something I find interesting .. both Dom Capers and Nick Saban started their coaching careers at Kent State University (Ohio).. both being Asst. Coaches there at the same time.
