Default Good idea. Shame they probably won't do it.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7370676

Normally I'm not a big Czarnecki fan, but I really agreed with this piece. I think that it might make the Super Bowl a bit more meaningful if the two best teams are playing instead of what we have had for the past few years which has been AFC vs. Sacrificial Lamb.

"But while tradition has its place, the league has shown a willingness to break with it from time to time. With regular-season games now being played in London and with the Bills arguing that they need to play at least one game in Toronto every season (probably starting in 2009 after the CFL season ends), what's the harm in simply seeding the league's division winners in order to, hopefully, get the game's two best teams in the league's showcase event?

For example, here would have been last season's playoff pairings after the wild-card games: San Diego would have hosted Seattle, Chicago would have hosted New Orleans, Baltimore would have hosted Philadelphia and the Colts would have hosted the Patriots. Who knows what would have happened from there? But I would bet anyone that the Bears wouldn't have ended up in New Orleans. Looking at the BCS with its five computers and three human polls, there must be one simple formula that could figure out how to pair the final four teams in the NFL."

no. Super Bowl is the winner of the AFC vs. the winner of the NFC. period.

Agreed. I thought that was the whole premise of the Super Bowl. MLB and NBA both do the same thing. It's the best from one conference/league vs. the best from the other.

If they're going to change it to match up the two best teams, then they might as well do away with conferences all together.

Sorry. I just don't necessarily see it that way because I'd rather see the two best teams, and not necessarily the two conference champs playing. Frankly, its kind of lame when the best two teams play on the conference championship weekend and the Super Bowl is a dud.

Admittedly, the games have been better of late and you just don't see the kind of spanking administered like the NFC used to do back in the early 90's but I digress.

But I suppose that changing the Super Bowl would the about the same as changing the World Series and that ain't happening....

Just a thought.

Also, the two best teams playing each other doesn't guarantee you the best game.

I definitely think this is what WILL happen, for sure - right after an NCAA playoff system.

the talent level in the NFL is pretty spread even. it's all about matchups. that's why you see blowouts these days.

If it's pretty even then wouldn't we not see blowouts?

Well, what takes away from the Super Bowl isn't so much the matchup, it's all the glam and glitter that comes with it. In the playoffs you just have a football game. That's it. With the SB you've got this band singing before the game, this band performing at halftime, this commercial goes for 8 gozillion dollars and so on and so on....they just seem to try and get as far away from actual football as they can. Halftime is 12 minutes for all 256 regular season games and 10 playoff games. Super Bowl halftime is 30 minutes or more it seems.

The Super Bowl didn't become one of the most watched events worldwide with all that stuff. It was the football game.

And yes, they should leave the playoff format exactly like it is forever.

no because it's all about various matchups. and turnovers. and coaching. talent-wise, it's pretty even. teams that blow out don't turn the ball over, teams that get blown out turn the ball over. it's simple really. "any given sunday" and all that.

and why do they turn the ball over?? because they're either:
a) not as talented
b) a talented player on the D makes a play

give it up man, nobody's buying it
