*plays the I never played football card, AGAIN*
I've read or heard the coaching staff saying we get burned on the blitz, we're better with 4 in the box. Yet the front 4 on D haven't gotten that much pressure on opposing QB's. We ALL know about our secondary, and heck, we're on safety #3/4 for the year. So from a coaching standpoint, assuming everything said above is true, what's the best scheme/playcalling for your def? |

If that is true (about blitzing), than they could try to pressure the QB with D-line stunts, which I dont see a whole lot of...

The Texans stunt and twist plenty. Their problem is that nobody is fast off the edge and their DTs aren't collapsing the pocket.

So one possible solution would be to stunt and bounce your DE's (?) out and around, while your DT's push forward?

How about "wrap up" tackles and quit trying to push the other guy down or hope he runs out of bounds? Maybe allow Demeco and Dunte to teach the "Basics of Tackling 101" class.

Dunta is a heavy hitter, but he frequently goes for the hit over the wrap.

I would agree but when he hits someone they usually go down. I'm tired of our guys watching people move on down the field. Occasionally we have two or three guys tackle the guy with the ball above the waist. Pretty difficult to be successful.

I have very rarely seen #90 twist with anyone. Thats part of the knock on him, he comes straight up the field - bull rushing.

I say we need to stunt and use a backer of the edge coming in.

There are so many different kinds of exoctic blitzes we can do.
And we don't do any of them. The Texans think exotic is dropping Mario or T.J. into coverage... |

Isn't this the same Richard Smith that was with the Oilers under (Glanville and Pardee) and those defenses were pretty aggressive..

I mentioned this before but the back end never helps out the D-Line either. I don't think the Texans have gotten a single coverage sack all year (maybe the one Amobi one). The opposing QB makes his 1st or 2nd read and is able to complete it way too easily.

Gotcha.... I just remember him being with the Oilers, and also remember the Oilers "D" during that era.... Al Smith was a stud.

I disagree. They vary it up pretty well, I think. His sacks in the KC game were on twists with the DT coming around and Mario coming under and taking two blockers. He's not just bull rushing every time. Sometimes he does, sometimes he tries to speed around the edge (like when he sacked Cleo Lemon), and sometimes he does stunts and comes to the inside.

We blitzed 27 times against the Falcons. In that first half, Petey got burnt so badly they had to call out a special skin graft team.
