Default AFC South Article on ESPN.com

Quote:
Well, the AFC South is still the Colts, only it's a lot more, too. In fact, it's the best division in football. The Colts are 5-0, of course. But the Jaguars are 4-1, the Titans 4-2 and the Texans 3-4. Every team in this division is aggressive, improving and entertaining.

From the article:

Quote:
Mario Williams was drafted specifically to get in Peyton Manning's grill. The reasoning was that a defensive end was much more important to long-term success than a running back such as Reggie Bush.

No draft pick in recent history has been as criticized. Although the jury is still out on Williams, he is improving this year (three sacks so far, compared to 4 last year). The Texans took another chance this year, albeit a less risky one, by drafting then 19-year-old DT Amobi Okoye. The point is, they've got a plan.
Nice words. But, do I say it before someone else does? Ok then.

What's the plan? LOL

I'm not being mean, if all the picks on the d-line pan out, we'll have the best d-line in the NFL.

The plan is to get an agressive defense that capitalizes on turnovers. Get us another corner and one or two linebackers, and we have a dominant defense.

And games are won/lost on the line - a good D line and a good O line will make up for almost everything. Look at the Titans - last year the O line started to gel and all of a sudden Travis Henry looked like Pro Bowl material (where he struggled mightily the year before). A rookie QB comes in and wins ROY - partly from talent, partly from hype, mostly from an O line that made him look good.

But our defense stunk last year - near bottom. No pass rush. No run D. Pathetic secondary. We lose our best player on defense (the corner who shall remain nameless), don't really add any pass rushers or run stuffers - but with the same personnel and a few minor adjustments we now have what appears to be a fantastic D line. #1 run D, and a pass rush that is making a still fairly weak secondary look 10X better than last year.

Titans fans were very critical of our mysterious "plan" this year - it wasn't sexy like the 49ers plan, but it's worked better. I think the Texans have most of the people in place to have a top 5-10 defense for years. It looks like maybe you need a little work still on the O line (which without really any changes is still much improved over years past). When you have that the running game should fall into place. When the running game improves the pass protection is easy. When the pass protection is solid, you've got receivers that are game breakers. All of that takes pressure off the D. You've got pass rushers already - and if you can settle the run D down then they'll be free to do their job and take pressure of the corners and safeties.

It does appear the AFC South is the toughest top to bottom, and the 3 worst teams still have plenty of room to improve. There are at least 2-3 other divisions where the bottom AFC south team could compete for the top of another division. (NFC West, NFC South, AFC West). I can't think of any other division where you could say that.

I just don't think Richard Smith is the right guy for the Texans and I didn't think so when he was hired? What has he done except know Kubiak? I would rather see a hot coordinator like the guy in Minnesota or maybe even Ron Rivera for the Texans.
