USC might get Bush-Whacked

LOS ANGELES -- A sports marketer who allegedly made improper payments to Reggie Bush while the Heisman Trophy winner was still at Southern California has agreed to meet with NCAA investigators and provide documentation of financial transactions between the two, according to a report.

The Los Angeles Times also reported Tuesday on its Web site that Lloyd Lake is expected to file a civil lawsuit in San Diego against Bush later this month, seeking to recoup money allegedly given to Bush and his family.

Good it is about time that USC pay for this because for the last few years they have acted like they were abve everyone and that they could get away with a lot of infractions.

I dunno, but about the time both started to suck on the field, apparently the Powers-That-Be decided that they were no longer worthy of an exemption from the kind of scrutiny most players & their colleges get ?

Agreed but unfortunately Bush won't get scratched even if he has to repay the money. I am sure the money he collected while at USC is nothing compared to his annual salary so he will just write a check and be done with it.

They won't touch Bush in the NFL, I understand that and NP as far as I'm concerned. What does annoy me about Bush at this point is all the money he's making off sponsers, which is so hypocritical because there are so many other players worthy of that fat cash-flow, if it based on on-field performance.
But the biggest deal is USC - why should they get a free-pass on this payday their own boy got while still a USC amateur when other schools get burned bad, real bad for the same behavior ?

USC is making money hand over fist...I don't feel sorry for them at all. They pimp out the kids and make massive amounts of money on TV revenue...how much is their Coach making a year and how much is the 3rd string back making? Sure he may have a scholarship, but he doesn't get a dime of that gargantuan revenue stream called NCAA Football.

If Bush makes a ton of money as a corporate spokesman...so be it. It won't be the first time a corporation threw good money away on spec.

There's a lot of other handsome, well-spoken, personable young African-American football players in the NFL besides Bush who are atleast as productive on the football field as he is. Matter of fact, I can think of a couple of them right on our team.
And most of them would probably be better corp-spokesman & role-models to other young A-As than Bush. And I think that should matter to the corp sponsers, of whom there is a very limited number to spread around the corp wealth.

Except every big college does the same thing for its top athletes, they are just better at covering it up.

Under the table money is just as much a part of college athletics as free drugs, strippers, and booze are in the recruiting of college athletes.

Bush got so much fee pub on ESPN....you know corporations would not get as much free bang for the buck to use an athlete that had less National exposure. I thought you were worldly Nuns?

Did you honestly think it's just a coincidence that ESPN has a history of promoting Bush & USC while many of the cable networks sponsers feature Bush in some of their ads ?

Not only forfeit games, but also forfeit Championships, Bowl money, etc.

Bush was asked about this when he came out and he said if the NCAA called him he would not answer the phone. When no one is talking it is hard to get anything done.

eh, I just thought you were sounding like you were a bit surprised that some other 'good looking' player didn't get Bush's endorsement opportunities...I'm just stating the obvious. Bush got more free exposure than anyone I can think of his SR year and went on to be a top 5 pick....I'm not shocked corporate America threw money at him hand over fist with that kind of visibility...regardless of his actual worth. It just won't keep happening now that he isn't the player he was in College.

Wonder why???? Well, in such cases the NCAA then talks to the USC Coaches. They HAVE to spill the beans if they know of anything. If they lie about it, then the phrase "lack of institutional control" shows up in NCAA Reports and leaks.

That will scare away most top level recruits.

Remember what caused the former SMU football player to rat out the program back in the 1980's..... SMU stopped paying him....

I think it's less about on-field production than it is about hype. Bush got the Heisman and a ton of pub. It makes sense why coporate America is using his celebrity right now, especially because the NOLA/Katrina story still draws ratings and the Saints were a rags-to-riches story last year. This year...'eh...not so much, but the advertising deals were already signed a long time ago.

It was not the coaches per say, it was an agent who wanted Bush to sign with his new firm so he let the Bush famil have an expensive home they could live in for free.

Also when Joe McKnight was recruited he said that he talked to Reggie and that was a determining factor in him chosing USC (That is against NCAA rules) the poddle said no he talked to Reggie while Joe was in the room not that he actually spoke to him.

The NCAA just let that one go with out really doing any investigation. They have done as much harm as USC agents and boosters.
