Yeah, that why I posted the memo up top I figured some things were would be off. Yeah 4 of the top 6 DLmen for the texans are FA. Will be interested to see how this is handled.
AJ, BTW, how long did the Texans sign Chester Pitts for out of the draft??? He should be a RFA if he signed a standard 3 year deal, but he is not listedI= know Gaffney got a 7 year deal even though he was a 2nd rounder. |

Pitts got a 4 year deal so he will be a UFA after the 2005 season if he continues to accrue time at the current rate.

One FA that jumps out is Edgerton Hartwell (ILB), Ravens.

The quick rule of thumb is that UFA is 4+ accrued years of service, RFA is 3 but less than 4 years, and EFAs are less than 3.
Teams have exclusive rights over guys with less than 3 accrued years so there is little risk of losing a guy with less than 3 years experience. RFAs have a little more negotiating power externally, but the "owning" team can match outside offers if they want. UFAs are free to go anywhere - including re-signing with the previous team. There are rules for "accrued years." You have to be active for x number of games (6 or 10 - I can't remember) to get credit for an accrued year. Being on IR counts as an accried year. Someone will post the CBA section here I'm sure. |

Arlington...Great post, good research.
I agree with most of your assesments on resigning our FAs (regardless of which category). I am honestly more curious as to who in the FA market we should go after. I am leaning toward upgrading the O-line and maybe an impact guy for the defensive front 7. OG - Andruzzi (Pats) or Wahle (Packers) OT - Jones (SEA) or maaaybe Pace (Rams)...unfortunately both of them will probably be too expensive. I would wholeheartedly go after Kyle Turley since he is probably thru with Mad Mike and Rams. Not sure what we we have to give up for him since he won't be a free agent but we should take a hard look at whatever it is. If he passes a serious physical he would bring us a much needed shot of nastiness to the line, he is a smart (if hot headed) player who has a rep as a QBs enforcer. For the D...Hartwell (BAL), Bell (Pittsburg), Phifer (Pats), or an outside shot at Peterson (49s). Peterson will probably get the franchise tag which takes him out of the running.

Free agency terms and related cap stuff
Why isn't Jerry DeLoach on any of these lists? Did the Texans extend him while I wasn't looking? Of the UFAs, I think Payne will be their top priority along with Simmons, Sears and/or DeLoach (I think one will be a goner) and McCree. Last edited by aj.; 12-30-2004 at 09:05 AM. |

Does anyone know if Shane Lechler will be a free agent this year? I know he is a hometown boy and I work with a very close friend of his family and she says either the 04 season was the last year in his contract or the 05 season will be his last year in his contract. I was just thinking that if Stanley is having issues with injuries we could look into Lechler. Does anyone know how long Stanley has left on his contract?

Lechler is under contract through '08 and Stanley through '06.

Here is my opinion on two FA changes to be made:
TE- get Bubba Franks, but probably unlikely LB- since Peek should be starting at ROLB in '05, and Wong wont move inside, get Bell from Pitt. and let wong be a back up or trade him. I doubt either would be possible, but I think they are two instant upgrades that would be phenominal. |
