How will our defense disrupt the play of Peyton Manning this weekend?

We know that our defense is going to have to scheme well to throw off his timing. I really cannot stand the guy, but he is brutal against zone or man coverage. I am a little worried about Faggins in man coverage, BUT Faggins is the one that shut Harrison down a few years ago.

I think we will rely heavily on our front four again, but we do need to time some blitzes on him. Does anyone have any ideas on how our d should approach this?

I am not too worried about the running game at all. We have some pluggers on the line and with Demeco in the middle and DRob coming off the edge, we seem to pretty much have the ground game covered.

I don't know the answers but I would sure love to see Dunta come on a corner blitz or 2 from the blindside.

I believe that the Texans will come out and try to get pressure with their front four to start the game. I don't know if that's possible at this point but I think they'll try it. I expect to finally see some regular blitzing this week and think that's been strangely absent (considering how wacky and "hit the beach" Smith is supposed to be) in the first two weeks. Obviously we didn't need to do it to control Huard and Delhomme so that's probably why it hasn't been used.

I don't for a minute think that the Colts don't expect us to blitz more than we have so far this season.

The thing about playing the Colts is that you have to accomplish what they know you're going to do. It's just like what they do to everyone else. We all know what the Colts are going to do. They just do it so well that they roll over other teams. The only way to beat them is to out execute them. It isn't done often but it can be done.

Blitzing Manning?

Don't. Or at least don't do too much of it, b/c our secondary is not good enough to be able to hold up if we don't get there. Our best weapon will be to keep him on the bench.

lets see what Mario & Co. can do, they've done pretty good job so far.

Amen! Defend the pass first at all costs. Drop the LBs into coverage. Let the front 4 get pressure. Personally, I think Mr. Ugoh is going to school this weekend.

Could be right about Ugoh, but he has played pretty well so far this year.

As far as blitzing Manning, that is really not a strategy used by too many teams any more. Reason being is that he routinely torches the exposed secondary and finds an open Harrison or Wayne down the field. The Colts ran the Saints out of the 2 deep zone only to burn them with long passes over the top once they committed more than 4 to the rush.

To me that is a recipe for disaster for the Texans. Why would they want to take their best cover guy off Harrison or Wayne to blitz from such a long way away? The odds are way better than average that Manning will spot and expose that plan.

Don't look too deep into my comment. I am saying I would like it because Dunta can bring some big hits. Is it the right idea, probably not, would I like to see Dunta take the wood to Manning...of course.

Because when he lays the wood, Manning may not get up...

I think we will start out dropping the linebacker's in coverage. It really depends on how sucessful the colts are at running the ball, and if the texans have to start sending more and more defenders to stop the run.

A huge part of how the colts operate on offense is the play action pass. If the front four of the texans can control the run, makes the play action less effective.

I'm not so sure. Manning should be able to beat the blitz and with our DBs I am afraid that might be an easy 6. I'd rather the line and maybe a LB move the O line back into QB and force him to rush.

Manning can be blitzed effectively, but he can't be given a pre-snap read of where the blitz is coming from. If the Texans come up and show which gap the blitzer is shooting, Peyton will pick the Texans apart. But by disguising the blitz, teams like the Steelers and the Pats have been able to rattle Manning, if not drop him.

We need at least 7 coverage guys back there, sometimes 8. Any less than that, Manning eats us alive.

That was actually what I was getting at... Call it "intelligent blitzing". We are going to have to scheme the hell out of what we do on defense this weekend.

I do disagree with everyone saying that all we have to do is drop as many guys back in coverage every play. You have to blitz a team to be successful. We just need to pick the right times and catch them off guard. However, with our front seven I think that there is no need for our safeties to be in the box.

The defenses that have effectively dealt with Manning have been the 3-4 of the Steelers and Patriots. They can bring the fourth pass rusher from any direction, and they've been good at hiding where it's coming from.

But with 4-3, we do not have the luxury of sending a blitz very often simply because Manning will take advantage. Our best hope is that our front four can effectively put some pressure on him so we can keep guys in coverage.

I'm hoping that a rabid home crowd takes Manning out of his game early, and if we can pressure him and throw his rhythm off, along with sustaining some drives on offense, we'll have a shot at beating them.

I have always felt that the real way to disrupt Manning is to get pressure from your Defensive Tackles. If they can drive our Guards/Center back it keeps him from stepping up and avoiding the Defensive Ends outside rush. This causes him to have to leave the pocket or get flustereed. As a Colt fan I am glad our line does a decent job sealing of the LOS enableing Manning to step up and pick his target... Just my 2 pennies
