Default Power Rankings Week 2

Things that make you go hmmm:

Peter King has ranking of team's in the league. He has the Texans listed at #10.

Quote:
10. Houston (2-0): Last team to beat Indianapolis? Houston, 27-24, last December. Next team to play Indianapolis? Houston, next Sunday at Reliant Stadium.
Great time to be a Texan fan, and for me to be the reigning Ultimate Texan Fan. Minor fun stat: Texans are 3-0 during my time as UTF.

It's nice that the team is getting some national exposure, but I can't help but be a little cautious before drinking the Kool-Aid. Yesterday was a great win, but we still have a long way to go this season. We still need another receiver to step forward, and I am still worried about the secondary.

However, I don't want to be a complete wet blanket. It is nice to receive mentions from NBC, ESPN, FOX and CNNSI. I wonder if the Texans v. Colts will be the game of the week?

always respected King and he was one of the few that was calling out Carr as a failure while everyone else was making excuses for the loser.

I think #10 may be a little high, but hey I aint complaining. If we can beat the Colts I say Top 5

Later in the same article he gives Kubiak his coach of the week award:

Coach of the Week

Houston's Gary Kubiak. Before Sunday afternoon, the Texans had never been 2-0 and had never scored 34 points (their total at Carolina) in a game. Credit Matt Schaub for the life-preserver he's thrown this franchise, and credit Kubiak for having the gumption to trade two second-round picks for a mostly unproven quarterback and then jamming his offense down Schaub's throat in one short offseason. All Schaub's done is complete 72 percent of his throws and become the leader David Carr never was in Houston.

Hey, all teams have strengths and weaknesses. No need to drink any Kool-Aid. You can be a fan, and support the team every way you can, and go for the ride. The Texans are a fun team to watch now. You have a sense of their direction. You can see what is possible.

Caution be damned. Nobody really knows what this team is capable of. Much better to know that your team has possibilities than to know that your team needs to luck into wins.

Texans fans are a cautious group by nature.

We're like the mouse that narrowly avoided getting caught in the trap - - - whenever we see cheese now, we have those doubts... But hey, what do you expect after all the losing seasons? Every year I get super pumped for the year, and every year so far I've been let down a little.

But you know what? I say TC is right. This team is different, the players were right. Even if we slow down a bit, Im still excited about the future much more than I've ever been. We have the start of something great here, so throw caution to the win and put your heart out there.

Default Re: Monday Morning QB

I like seeing Kubiak as coach of the week. I think putting the Texans up near the top of Power Rankings is premature. So far this season (I so hate playing negative man during great times like these) we've beaten KC and Carolina. I think everybody is wise to the fact that KC is a weak team so far this year (and admittedly, we handled them as we should handle weak teams) and Carolina had beaten the Rams who I think we can all agree embody "overrated".

To my way of thinking we've thumped overrated opponents as a good team should and that's our target, to be a good team, a "quality" team. Now we play a great Colts team and we see if we can play with the big boys.

Of course I want to see the Texans win this game and I very much think they can win this game as long as they stay focused and do what they've been trained to do. If they lose the game but are in it all the way then I'm still happy with where we are in 2007. If they win it then all bets are off and I'm speechless.

Most everybody in the NFL can hang around .500 on any given year. A few games under or a few games over can be nothing more than a couple of plays difference. Teams that perpetually hover around 2-4 wins a year have leadership and coaching problems. Teams that stay between 10-14 wins on a regular basis have great minds and strong leadership (and sometimes great camera men filming the other sideline). I believe that it's much harder to climb past the 8-8 area than it is to get out of the basement. Watching a team learn to win can be the most frustrating thing in the world. Wouldn't it be amazing if that was what last year was all about? Isn't the idea that Gary Kubiak took the 2-14 Texans and built a team that can win in 2 years incredible? I haven't posted much since the Panthers game because I've been kind of speechless. The buzz is just wearing off now and I can't stop smiling. I look at the Texans and I have to acknowledge, we're pretty good.

HA! Texans fans aren't cautious. We are damned fools in love. It is easy to just jump on a bandwagon. But easy doesn't feel as good.

It's the difference between hooking up and finding true love. You can be cautious. You can be emotionally uninvested. Or you can find a true emotional connection with someone and be committed in good times and in bad.

It's more fun to watch your team grow and improve and then feel the joy when they succeed. Bring all the people that want to join the bandwagon. But know that the people who have been committed since the beginning are the ones with the biggest smiles today. It's just the way it works.

As for the Carolina win, the things I'm more impressed with is not beating that particular team, but the way they beat them.

Having some bad breaks early on. And dealing.

To play with composure on the road even when stuff was hitting the fan.

Knowing that if they can face the Cowboy, Chicago and Panther's defensive lines and not get roughed up, they can face just about any line in the league. That Schaub, like all quarterbacks is going to have normal ups and downs, but he looks like an NFL starting quarterback.

We can talk about poor teams/good teams, but the way the Texans have won the last two games, with good performances on offense, defense and special teams shows so much promise.

That you can see the effects of coaching, even if the Texans don't have all their pieces and parts in place. That they have a direction.

The Texans' philosophy, the philosophy they have been mocked for, is that they are a team. A team that doesn't depend on one player for their success. They've been called a boring no-star team. They've been ridiculed for not taking flashy college players and then tailoring their offense around them.

If Andre Johnson's MRI comes back funky today, that philosophy of not depending on any one player to win is going to be tested like no other. Is it talk, or is it real? Hope not to know the answer to that one.

One game at a time. Just one game at a time. Hope to enjoy each one of them.

I see it totally different. We love the team, but are so afraid of what it could mean if they are actually good.

Some of the fans can take the "Caution be damned" approach, and that's fine. Me? Well, I'm cautiously optimistic by nature, so all I'm saying is I'm not ready to jump in head first just yet. As a fan, suffering through 4+ years of a sub-standard NFL product, I think it's smart to take a "wait and see" approach. We still have 14 games to go.

Hesitancy or the propensity to worry about everything?

Wake up and smell the pigskin. At no time in Texans's history are we churning along on all cylinders and getting the results along the way. Enjoy the present and be prepared for the future - we will encounter injuries, we will get beat and we will win again. How each fan deals with that reality, based on the context of their former experiences is unique, but having a choice to recognize quality that gets better snap over snap rather than being a continued naysayer with an agenda is a nice wrinkle to embrace over the past years.

I guess thats really the main difference. Every year its easy to get yourself "convinced" that the team is improved, but this is the first year I've really, really believed it. The players sensed it early on, and have been trying to tell the fanbase for weeks. Fans to Texans - Message received!

This is a great week for the Texans. They have finally done something that I have wanted them to do for years now: not play a team to their expected reputation. The Bills blew them out of the water two years ago when the Bills were supposed to be play-off bound. The Bills then went 5-11. Then last year the Texans made the Redskins look like all the hype they had leading into that game. Again, the Skins barely managed a 5-11 record. The Texans did better and against better teams (6-10). So this year, when in week 2 a lot of people were saying that Carolina could be play-off bound and that they had one of the best front 7 in the league, the Texans still skinned their hides. That is a huge difference over the past two years, and I credit the coaches and staff, but I also credit the win over Indy last year. I think it was a turning point when the Texans realized they could beat anybody in the league.

The more confidence one has - the better they become. This game was huge on any number of levels - but the boost in confidence is priceless.

This team learned yesterday that they can come from behind in hostile territory and score not just enough points to win - but enough points to win decisively and unanswered points at that. It doesn't matter right now if the Panthers end up with only 2 wins this season or make it to the playoffs. The perception was that they were a playoff caliber team and that is the perception the Texans beat. That is what has the fans smiling and the team walking a little taller.

I don't know if we will beat Indy - but I think we can and I think the team thinks we can even if we start out behind. That is worth a touchdown or two right there.

I would like to keep the Texans as the best kept little secret in the NFL for one more week (sssshhhh) - let the pundits dismiss us out of hand. The Colts will never know what hit them - just like the Panthers.

I'm buying throat lozenges cuz I know I'll need them Sunday - in bulk.

Every now and then there is one team that steps out of nowhere (seemingly) and captures the imagination of the NFL pundits and fans. This is starting to look like our Cinderella season. This team is going to be one of the big storylines for the 2007 season if we can keep this up....I guarantee you that the entire league is going to have an eye on the Colts v Texans this weekend.
