I was at the game Sunday (I drive in from Austin) and I don't recall seeing any blitzes. I'm sure there must of been a couple. Those of you with the ability to review the game on TV, can you tell me how often we blitzed and what the results were.
I saw a number of stunts that were quite effective, but I just didn't notice us bringing extra players. |

I remember reading Huard was quoted as saying we didn't blitz a lot.
Here we go. QB Damon Huard (on if the Texans' defense surprised him) “They didn't blitz us a whole lot. They played a lot of man coverage, and they were able to stop us, which is impressive. If you can stop the run and make us a one-dimensional team, you're going to win the game.” http://www.houstontexans.com/news/St...?story_id=3602 Encouraging. |

If that's how our defense performs without blitzing.... oh boy, my pants are wet now.

Hmmm, maybe we are not blitzing to cover up our poor secondary coverage. I still have yet to see the game again. Maybe if NFL Network replays it, but the pressure we did get was from our front 4 last week which was pretty impressive.
Maybe we do blitz more against the Panthers though to try and pressure Delhomme and make him look like the QB that Carr is supposedly going to replace. |

Carr was signed as a backup in case of injury. Never was he considered a replacement. I hope you guys don't plan on playing much man to man against the Panthers offense. If you do plan on seeing Smith and Carter in the paint numerous times. The best way to stop the Panthers offense is to pressure Delhomme. If the Texans sustain pressure on Delhomme on passing downs then you will likely turn him over. This being said don't send the dogs and not get there and hope your secondary can go mano y mano with Steve Smith.

I think your exactly right. I don't think the Panthers will be able to establish a running game on the Texans based on the fact that the Texans never allowed Larry Johnson to get his motor running. Chiefs Run Game > Panthers Run Game. However Panthers Passing offense is much better than the Chiefs.

Zone blitz?
Cover 2? Can our front 4 get to this QB?

But if we send in one of the coverage people on a blitz, and it gets picked up, then that means one of our safeties will have to cover Smith by himself. Way too risky in my book. I'd just double up on Smith the whole game, and see if our DL can get to Delhomme by themselves. |

There were three plays where it looked like run blitzes. But we were pretty much just bringing 4.

Not trying to sell Dunta Robinson short. I'm just saying Steve has embarassed much more talented players in the past. I guess that's why they play the games, huh.

I'm looking forward to seeing DRob and S.Smith. I think it'll be a good matchup.
We tend to do ok vs WRs not named Lee Evans. Covering the TE has been an issue for us forever.

I generally avoid the word "respect" like the plague in here because I can't stand watching Texans fans whine about how they don't get any BUT, having said that I think it's important to point out that Dunta Robinson does not get much in the way of respect outside of the Texans fanbase.
The reason for that is simple. He had a great rookie year and then vanished as far as the rest of the country is concerned. He spent 2005 and 2006 getting toasted almost as much as Faggins does because we had nobody putting any real pressure on the QB on a consistent basis. You hand pick the best secondary in the history of the NFL and let me find the four weakest pass rushers I can and I'll show you what a bunch of bums you have back there covering those recievers. Without a pass rush every secondary looks weak. Now that Dunta & Co. are getting the support they need from the front 4 things are going to turn around in a hurry. If the Texans can pressure Delhomme like they did Huard (and I'm not saying they necessarily can) then Dunta's job is a lot easier and they have a real chance in this game.

Last game we were trying to contain LJ. This game plan will be different in the sense that we have to try to contain Delhomme and Smith. Therefore, I think we will see more blitzing early to try to rattle Jake.
