Texans Sign Butler

Carolina waived, Texans picked up........where he is placed as OT is your guess......backup? practice squad? Who knows.

They would have probably liked to bring T Rashad Butler back, but he was claimed by Houston.

Scott Jackson was released.

Strengths: Shows good footwork and a great first step. Is big with the frame to add bulk. Gets into position quickly. Takes good angles. Possesses quick feet, gets good leverage and locks on well. Stays disciplined; can adjust at the linebacker level to hit moving targets. Has decent range; is effective at pulling and trapping. Has the size to overpower linebackers. Sets quickly and sustains blocks. Has the quickness and mobility to drive off edge rushers. Changes directions well, adjusting to inside moves.

Weaknesses: Must add bulk and strengthen lower body to stick in the NFL. Struggles to overpower defensive linemen. Doesn't pack a good initial punch. Isn't strong enough in upper body to knock back defenders. Without getting bigger and stronger, will struggle to hold ground against pro bull rushers. Past ankle injury raises minor durability concerns.

Bottom line: Butler gained good experience as a starter during his junior and senior seasons at Miami. His explosiveness and discipline make him an appealing prospect, despite the fact he needs weight-room work. He is worthy of a seventh-round pick.

Dan Pompei analysis
Is a thin, long-armed blocker who would fit best in a zone-blocking scheme, like the Broncos’. Is athletic with good footwork. Can matchup with speed rushers. Must improve bulk and strength. Gets defeated at the point of attack. With continued development in the weight room and continued improvement on the field, could become an outstanding pro.

Since his draft profiles in 2006, he shrunk and bulked up............from 6'5" and 287 lbs to 6'4" and 293 lbs.......that's why we snatched him up.

Texans claimed T Rashad Butler off waivers from the Panthers.

Butler has upside but was a flop for the Panthers as a third-round draft pick last year. It's unlikely that he'll make a big impact for the Texans.

He was drafted in the third round last year by the Panthers, #89 overall from Miami. He isn't on the NFL players, so can't get any info on how many games he played last year.

Rashad Butler has been a valuable member of the Hurricane offensive line during his career. He has started in parts of three seasons at right tackle, but was also Eric Winston's replacement at left tackle when Winston tore his ACL in 2004.

Butler has a lot of upside at the next level. He is an excellent athlete, and shows impressive agility for a man his size. He is quick and agile in pass protection and does a very good job at mirroring defenders. Butler has a nice frame at 6'5 293, and has a lot of room for growth potential. He is very versatile, having spent extensive time at both tackle positions.

Strength and bulk are two things Butler is going to have to improve upon to play at the next level. He has excellent height and athleticism for tackle, but his lack of bulk is a major problem. Butler can be pushed around in the running game because he is not strong enough to drive defenders off the ball. He's also vulnerable to the bull rush off the snap in pass protection.

Despite his experience, Butler has work to do in order to play at the next level. He must get stronger if he wants to last in the NFL. His athleticism is very impressive for an offensive lineman, but he is not strong enough to hold up on a consistent basis. If he can show the ability to add weight and maintain his agility, Butler has big time upside in the NFL.

He went to the same school as Eric Winston at Miami. He played mostly RT there, but replaced Winston at LT when he was injured, so he has experienced at both sides. Sounds like a good athlete, needs to get stronger though.

Sounds like a good move since we have a bad history with Olinemen and staying off the injury list. Any Olinemen that can step up and play multiple positions is good.

Classic zone, finesse type OT but that is certainly consistant with our present
set of tackle starters, Salaam & Winston.
This guy has flopped badly in the league so far, but you never know, maybe with him his third NFL chance here in Houston will be the proverbial charm.

I keep seeing that he flopped, or that he is a bust. Wasn't he a rookie last year? Didn't he spend all of last year on IR or something for a staph infection?

Seems to me that he really hasn't had much opportunity to become a stud or a bust.

I'm relatively sure that he has to stay on the active roster all season. The same goes for any players that are signed from another team's practice squad.
