At the NFL's annual meeting this spring, commissioner Roger Goodell talked about the NFL Shield as the "envy of the sports world." The league has been careful to make an "evolutionary, not a radical change," says Baird.

•The new shield features eight stars (representing the eight AFC and NFC divisions) vs. 25 on the current logo. Why 25? It's a mystery. After researching the shield's origins, the designers could find no reason for 25 stars, says Jaime Weston, director of brand and creative operations. The shield logo was first used around 1940, two decades after the NFL's founding in 1920.

• The football at the center has been redesigned to resemble the ball atop the Vince Lombardi championship trophy, says Baird. It replaces the old-fashioned pigskin nicknamed the "Hamburger" inside league offices.

•NFL vendors will probably thank the league for switching to fewer stars. Some vendors, without permission, have used fewer stars rather than shoehorning 25 tiny stars into smaller shields on hats and T-shirts.

My first reaction was I thought it was a mistake, but after reading on it seems they might actually make it better without destroying the general look.

As long as the change isn't too radical.

What's wrong with changing the logo? There isn't much of a difference.

I never did realize that the stars on the NFL logo on caps and shirts and stuff has only 19 stars. At least on mine it does.

I honestly would not have noticed. They probably could have said nothing about it and just did it. I'm sure the media would have caught it after a while, and Madden would do a chalk comparison on them.

I like it. Looks cleaner and the 8 stars make sense.

I can live with this. I long ago gave up the hope that some things in this world simply wouldn't change. Now I'm just relieved when they don't screw something I love up.

It is not a travesty and so I'm content.

I'm with you there. When I saw "logo change" I had fears of those stupid robo-football players like the ones on CBS on the logo.

I like it. A bit more sleek and as the article says, the stars mean something as does the positioning of the football.
