Default Eli fires back at Tiki

Quote:
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Tiki Barber wanted a more intense, fiery Eli Manning. The New York Giants quarterback gave Tiki what he wanted in a loud ripping voice on Tuesday.

Two days after being criticized on national television by Barber for a lack of strong leadership, Manning ripped his former teammate and current NBC football analyst for distracting the team last season with his early retirement announcement and his criticism of coach Tom Coughlin.

"I guess I'm just happy for Tiki that he's making a smooth transition into the TV world," Manning said. "You know, I'll be interested to see if he has anything to say (about a team) besides the Giants, and what his comments will be on that."

Normally reserved and never one to criticize a coach or teammate, Manning seemed to enjoy going after Barber, the Giants' all-time leading rusher who retired after last season at age 31 to pursue a television career.

Speaking during the halftime show of the Sunday Night Football game between the Giants and Baltimore Ravens, Barber had said that Manning's attempt to lead an offensive meeting in the 12th week of the last season was "comical" at times.

I didn't think Tikki was taking a shot at Eli. He said last year he(Tikki) turned over the offense game day speach(or something) to Eli, and you could tell Eli wasn't comfortable with it at first, but he got into it as the year went on. His comments were supportive of Ei, and he was basically saying this year would be another stepping stone that we'll all get to watch in Eli's development.

Tikki said we can watch how Eli can lead the team, without another Veteran there in the huddle to support him.

Eli is a pansy. He just looks like he was one of those kids that whined and cried until he got what he wanted.

I do like their new commercial with Lienhart. Pretty funny.

Despite being a great player, Tiki Barber has been a distraction to that team and not a positive for team chemistry. I'm glad he retired.

Who hasn't been a distraction for them? Strahan, Shockey, Tiki, Burress and Coughlin himself. IMO, Coughlin should've been let go after last season. I don't see the Giants going very far this season without Tiki and possibly Strahan.

I still think it goes back to Coughlin not being the right guy from day one. I think Tiki and Shockey were right to call out Coughlin, he's definately got talent on the team but they have been outcoached several times and two of those times being in the playoffs the past two years.

Honestly though Eli and Archie brought all the Scrunity they could when they made the predraft fuss about going to San Diego. Which Ironically would've been a far better situation to go to instead of the glaring light of NYC. Until he gets them to the SB he's always going to be in the background of Archie and Peyton. Which is unfortunate seems like likeable enough guy that has a lot of tools to work with. I personally see a David Carr-esque situation brewing with the Giants.

I saw all but one Giant game last year and I can tell you that Eli is nowhere near the situation Carr was in. Eli isn't as bad as some of the press makes him out to be. He may look like a "dope" as someone else mentioned but he isn't a "wuss". The guy will hang in there and take a hit. He may not be his brother but he is not the bust David Carr is. He's had some really good games. Carr never looked like a real NFL QB.

The press loves to pin on Eli the fact that the Giants finished 2-6 during the last 8 games of the season, saying he starts strong and ends badly. However they fail to mention all the injuries the Giants had on defense last season. The Giants were down to 3rd stringers at many positions on D during the last half of the season. They had some key losses on the O line also. Many of those losses were because they couldn't stop anybody. Eli put his team in a position to win several times only to have the defense give it up in the last minute. He performed a clutch late 4th QTR drive vs the Cowboys to take the lead at the Meadowlands, only to have it blown by the defense. The defense blew the Titans game also. If Eli didn't have the last name Manning, and played somewhere else other than New York he would be considered an up and coming top NFL QB.

Eli is right. Tiki was a drama queen with his retirement for half a season, unlike say Curtis Martin who went out with quiet class. Tiki also tried to throw Coughlin under the bus during the season.

Archie Manning wasn't a bust, by the way. He was drafted by the Saints of the 70's, when there was no free agency. He's lucky to still be alive.

I'm not saying he's a bust or anything along those lines....just i think it's very possible he might get run out of town for last name of Manning and not living up to all they gave up to acquire him.He did have what could be his signature game against the Eagles last year and played well in the opener vs the Colts. I'm also not big on the Coughlin Coaching staff as well.

Honestly i might get shot shot here but i don't beleive Tiki retires if Coughlin was gone at the end of the year. Last year's locker room was ripe with mutiny and i am dumbfounded that the front office deceided to stick with Coughlin. Strahan seems along those lines as well.

I watch a lot of Giants games and the Eli from last year was not the same Eli from 2005. He's getting better, as a young QB should.

Much ado about nothing, IMO.

I saw the story on Total Access last night, and it wasn't nearly as dramatic as some news sources have made it out to be.

I could really care less about Eli & Tiki, to be honest. Of course I want the Giants to be successful simply because they play in the Cowboys' division.
