Default Dayne to get goal line carries?

I read on RotoWorld that Kubiak is a big Ron Dayne fan and that he plans to use him fairly often, despite Ahman Green, and even use him as a goal line back.

Is there any substance to this RotoWorld blurb? Ahman Green has always seemed to be an effective GL back.

I must admit, I am more interested from a fantasy perspective but I figured I would go right to the true experts to find out.

Being a 49er fan, I know a lot of national sites really fudge the bottom line on many of our team-related news, and I'd suppose they do so as well with the Texans. Smaller market teams just don't get enough national media coverage for their info to be accurate.

Aside from my question, good luck to your team this year, I've always been fond of the Texans ever since you guys knocked off those stinkin Cowboys in game 1.

Ahhh...a fellow fantasy footballer looking for answers!

Kubiak had said earlier on that Dayne would be the short yardage back and I don't think that has changed. Late last year Dayne proved he could punch the ball in when we got down there.

I know it's not much, but that's where I think we stand.

Good Luck.

Thanks guys. Should've done my research before drafting Ahman...too bad, I had high hopes for him in Kubiak's offense w/ Schaub at the helm.

We've got high hopes for him, too. So far, he's only shown a little bit in the preseason games although he's apparently looked awesome in practice.

Personally, I'm not sold on Dayne as a short yardage back, yet. I wouldn't worry too much about Dayne vulturing all of Green's TD's, yet.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. The company line has been that Dayne is the goaline/short yardage back since we signed Green, but I don't think it sticks. Ahman Green has been a largely successful goal line back in his career and Dayne has been totally uneffective so far this offseason. I think the fact that Kubiak wants to use Dayne in goal line situations speaks more to worries about Green wearing down during the season than it does to Dayne's goal line proficiency.

Ultimately, if Dayne continues to falter in short yardage situations and Green stays healthy, I think Green will start to get those carries (especially with the weight Sherman's input carries.)

Reminds me of one of the stock quotes from a Madden game

"Coach, if you need 1 yard, I'll give you 3."

"What if I need 4 yards?"

"I'll give you 3."

You did well in drafting Green and not Dayne. Dayne never has nor will ever be a power/short yardage/goal line back. He's been horrible in getting those tough yards his whole career. Thats not going to change after a few good games against horrid defenses from last year.

If it runs like a girl, gets arm tackled like a girl, get tripped up like a girl it's probably Ron Dayne.

I'll second Dayne not being a short yardage back, he is a decent one cut runner but he isn't going to shift the pile... he is going to run into it and break someone's leg.

If you drafted Green you can reassure yourself by looking at the splits for Green and Dayne. Green has a very good track record for short yardage--Dayne not so. This is really just a function of fans and pundits assuming bigger is better in short yardage and it just ain't so. Ask Emmitt, Priest and LT.

Seriously what is up with that thought process? Marcus Allen, the best all time short yardage and goal line guy was neither big nor abnormally fast. Heck I would rather hand the ball to Allen today then Dayne. One guy has the knack for it.

Dayne being a short yard back gives me shivers. Kind of like the ghost of Charlie Casserly walking through your hall at night dragging the pens that he used to sign all of the dead weight he brought in, while moaning in a Massachusetts Kennedy accent, "Ehhhhhh! Ehhhhhh!"

BTW, Charlie Casserly has no Wikipedia entry, I find that very....Casserly.

The really funny thing is that his Wiki entry is considered "orphaned" because there are very few or no articles that link to his page.

That, is very Casserly.

Ahman's going to be a good RB for you. He's not a first RB kinda guy, but as a RB2 or 3, he'll keep you competitive.

Default Re: Dayne to get goal line carries?

I kinda think that instead of using Dayne as a short yardage back, they should just give him a certain number of carries every 3rd quarter. That would rest of Green for the rest of the game and we wouldn't lose Green's short yardage ability so much. Dayne can be a load, but he has to get started first, and that kind of start would mean that any RB would be at least a yard or so past the original LOS anyway. Dayne is good for making 3 yds. into 5 or 6. He's not good at making nothing into 2 yds.
