Default Greg Wesley trade?

Read this over on HPT...I think this is as far a progression in this previously discussed trade as I have read about.

Reserve safety Greg Wesley, a starter for the last seven seasons, could be traded soon to the Chiefs’ opening-day opponent, the Houston Texans.

The Texans are in need of a veteran safety and have asked the Chiefs what it would take to acquire Wesley. The Chiefs promoted two of last year’s draft picks, Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard, ahead of Wesley and into the starting lineup.

The Chiefs had talked to the Denver Broncos about a deal involving Wesley, but the Chiefs were hesitant about sending him to a team they will play twice this season.

If they make the trade they need to make sure Anthony Weaver is involved in it.

I imagine Gado or Lundy will be involved, since their RB is suspect without LJ.

Apparently Kubes has a thing for Michael Bennett as well, so it may be a multi player trade.

2006 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

Comment:
Wesley is physical, experienced and pretty athletic. He is versatile and has played both safety positions. He is tough and competitive. He has the play recognition and speed to run the alleys. He is quick to insert and takes good angles to the ball. He will step up and take on a lead blocker and shows the ability to shed and finish the play. He can uncoil and pop a ball carrier. He has good key-and-diagnose and anticipation skills in coverage. He has the straight-line speed to run vertically with tight ends, and he reacts well with his back to the quarterback. He has good quickness, balance and playmaking skills in short and intermediate areas. But Wesley is a little stiff and overaggressive. He is most natural playing downhill and in confined areas. He has an upright pedal and lacks ideal transition ability. He has some wasted motion in his plant-and-drive. He doesn't seem very comfortable in deep zones. He can get out of control and miss some tackles.

Sounds as though he probably has a decent amount still left in the tank (good height at 6'2", and not afraid to hit even though he is only 206 pounds). Starting 30 games since 2005, is evidently VERY DURABLE, again despite his 206 pound frame.:

Quote:
Pro Career
Bone-rattling performer entering his eighth season with the Chiefs … Made the move to free safety in 2005, starting 30 contests at that position over the last two seasons … Is expected to compete for a starting role once again in 2007 … Spent his first five seasons with the Chiefs as the club’s starting strong safety … Consistent performer has started all but one game he’s appeared in for Kansas City after entering the NFL as an unheralded third-round draft pick in 2000 … Devastating hitter set a career high with four forced fumbles in 2004 … Currently ranks eighth on the franchise’s all-time interception list with 29 and needs just two more INTs to bypass CB Kevin Ross (30) for seventh position … Owns a pair of three-INT games, including such an effort against Patriots QB Tom Brady that proved pivotal in a 26-16 win vs. New England (11/27/05) ... Knows what to do once he gets the ball in his hands, averaging 18.7 yards per INT return over his career … Excellent tackler topped the 100-tackle plateau in three of his first four NFL campaigns … Already ranks eighth in franchise history with 671 career tackles and would bypass S Jerome Woods (720) for seventh on the all-time chart with just 50 more stops … Has played in 103 games with 102 starts, making him one of just 34 players in team history to open 100 or more contests … A punishing performer who is one of the league’s most vicious hitters and frequently delivers big blows to receivers who tread across the Chiefs secondary … Started his first 37 games in a Kansas City uniform, becoming just the third player in Chiefs history since ‘70 to open the first 32 games of his career. Was the first player to do it since Chiefs Hall of Fame inductee DE Art Still (’78-79). The only other Kansas City player to hold that distinction since the AFL-NFL merger in ‘70 is S Gary Barbaro, who started his first 32 games over the course of the ‘76-78 campaigns … Was the first Kansas City defensive back and just the fourth player in Chiefs history to produce 100+ tackles in his first two NFL seasons … His 227 tackles in 2000-01 were the highest total ever assembled by a Chiefs defensive back in his initial two pro seasons … Burst onto the NFL scene with a sensational rookie effort in 2000 when he became the first Chiefs rookie to start all 16 games since CB Kevin Ross in ‘84 … Also earned the Chiefs prestigious Mack Lee Hill Award presented annually to the team’s top rookie or first-year performer and was a consensus All-Rookie selection, receiving those honors from Pro Football Weekly, Football News and Football Digest … Was billed by the Chiefs as one of the steals of the 2000 draft, a claim which certainly proved to be prophetic … Truly a unique story in today’s age of NFL scouting which leaves virtually no stone unturned … Became eligible for the draft after the 2000 combine and was worked out on his college campus by just eight NFL clubs, including Kansas City … The first Chiefs player to ever come out of Arkansas - Pine Bluff, which was formerly known as Arkansas AM&N … Has played in 103 games (102 starts) in a Chiefs uniform, producing 671 tackles (476 solo), 29 INTs (542 yards) and 6.0 sacks (-39.0 yards) ... Also owns four fumble recoveries, 11 forced fumbles, 41 passes defensed, 19 QB pressures and 17 special teams stops and a forced fumble on special teams … Has also started two postseason contests, recording 14 tackles (13 solo).
Transactions: Signed a six-year contract extension with Kansas City (1/12/04) ... Signed a one-year restricted free agent tender with Kansas City (5/20/03) ... Signed a three-year contract with Kansas City (6/6/00) ... Was tabbed by Kansas City in the third round (85th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft.

2006
Started 14 games at free safety and was inactive for one contest … Compiled 71 tackles (65 solo) with two stops for loss, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a QB pressure … His three INTs tied with S Jarrad Page for second on the team … Had two special teams tackles and a forced fumble on special teams … Totaled seven tackles and an INT off QB Jake Plummer at Denver (9/17). It was his 27th career INT tying LB Willie Lanier for eighth in team history … Tallied seven tackles at Pittsburgh (10/15) ... Returned a QB Philip Rivers INT 29 yards and forced a CB Antonio Cromartie fumble on a kickoff return vs. San Diego (10/22) ... Suffered a left shoulder injury at St. Louis (11/5) ... Was inactive at Miami (11/12) with that injury … Was active, but did not play vs. Oakland (11/19) ... Default Re: Greg Wesley trade?

Found this piece about what's going on with Wesley and the Chiefs (3 1/2 weeks old)........looks like we could have an inside track now:

Quote:
Could it happen? I mean really, could the Broncos and Chiefs, bitter AFC West rivals form way back int the AFL days really consummate a trade, really agree to a deal that could make each team better in some way, shape or form?

If you believe what the newspapers in Kansas City are saying the Broncos and Chiefs are in discussions on a deal that would send disgruntled Chiefs safety Greg Wesley to the Broncos for a draft pick. In fact, the Kansas City Star goes so far as to say the two teams have agreed to the compensation, with the Chiefs holding off final approval of the deal becuase, well, after all, the Broncos are a divisional rival and Wesley is a pretty decent safety.

In reality this story, which you have heard nothing of in the Denver media, was probably leaked by the Chiefs in hopes of generating interest in the seven-year vet around the league. If nothing happens, and the way the Chiefs have handled their personnel matter this off-season it is unlike anything will, K.C. with have to decide on whether releasing Wesley for nothing or at least getting something for him even if the partner is a hated rival.

Let me give some free advice to Carl Peterson. Your star running back is pissed, one of your best defenders is an alocoholic and pissed, you finally got rid of your starting quarterback, who was pissed, and the way you are handling the QB battle is bound to piss off everyone involved. All the while, your fan base, you know, the ones who pay your salery are getting increasingly pissed. You are a rebuilding football team. Go ahead, Carl, you can say it....Reeeeee-buillllllddddddiinnng. There, that should feel better.
Quote:
All I'm saying is the Chiefs should build for the future, the present be damned. If the Broncos are going to give the Chiefs more than a bucket of golf balls and a free ticket to next year's Broncos' Fain Fair the Chiefs should jump on it, and FAST. Sure, Wesley might make some plays this year, or next, that come back and haunt them, but do the Chiefs really think they are going to be Super Bowl ready this year or next? I think not...but then again, as we have talked about in the past, 9-7 and a playoff appearance are considered a success.

Skill and style wise Wesley is probably similiar to CC Brown. He has played better and longer, but would not be long term solution at the position, assuming a 6th or 7th rounder, there are worse things that the Texans could do.

I think he would be the equal of anyone we had.

Just hope we don't give up draft picks for him.

What interests me about the report is that they have put two youngsters back there to start. I'm hoping this can be exploited come game time.

Maybe a big day for Daniels opening up the middle of the field.

Default Greg Wesley

Saw this on HPF...

Quote:

Its seems like we really want him, and might end up with him too. Looking at his stats, he seems like a really good player but I know stats don't tell the whole story about a player.

If anyone every seen this guy play, please spare some info about him. Does anyone know why he got demoted in KC?

I fully admit that I have a bias against many Chiefs that comes from living in Kansas City. That said, I always thought he was one of the weaker links in an already weak defense up there.
