FERGUSON TO BE GONE FROM GREEN BAY

It's been six years since Robert Ferguson was selected by the Packers in round two of the NFL draft. And after seasons of unfulfilled promise, Ferguson's tenure with the team is over.

"Robert will no longer be a Packer," coach Mike McCarthy said on Thursday. "We're going to go in another direction. We're just moving on [and moving out] with the other guys and that's where it stands right now. I'll have more definitive information for you tomorrow."

The Packers will try to trade Ferguson before cutting him loose.

Ferguson is due to earn a base salary of $1.8 million in 2007, and a base salary of $2.2 million in 2008. No one will want to buy that contract, even for an eighth-round draft pick.

Possible destinations include the Texans, since assistant head coach Mike Sherman was the G.M. in Green Bay when Ferguson was drafted, and the Vikings, since the receivers they currently have pretty much stink.

We won't mention the fact that, when Ferguson's name was submitted by Sherman, the name of former Wisconsin standout Chris Chambers was still on the board. (Oh, wait. We just did.)

Chances are either he's due a bonus sometime soon, or the Packers are just trying to dump him before the regular season. I believe if he were to be on the opening day roster that the Packers would be on the hook for his salary for the season ($1.8 mill). Attempting to trade him seems kind of odd though after making it clear you weren't going to have him as a member of your organization any longer. Kind of minimizes any trade value he would've had although it might have been slim to none to begin with. Just cut him loose and be done with it.

Profootballtalk.com is reporting that Ferguson may be on his way to Houston given his connection to Mike Sherman who drafted him in the 2nd round when he was HC for the Packers. Ferguson is a former Aggie as well...

Wow, after the draft we were discussing the lack of competition at the wide receiver spot... now our cup runneth over.

He has some bright spots and I don't doubt his ability, but how healthy is he now and how long can he stay healthy?

I want to trade in some of our question marks for exclamation points.

I like the receivers we have now on this team. I don't want another person that may take away from JJ or Mathis. I really believe that JJ and Mathis are your second and third receivers on this team.

Serously though. I don't really know enough about his skill set to say yeah or nay, but I like the idea of Jacoby being able to step up into the #2 spot beside AJ. There could be something else going on with Ferguson that isn't being reported. How is his work ethic? How is he as a team mate? If it's all about the money, we don't have much to spend anyway.

How come we can go from "It's training camp. The more players the better the competition" to "We do not have room. I like our players"? My position on an earlier thread was "unless a player is a clear cut above what we have, let's give those on the roster more reps."

I thought he was a bungled pick by the Packers then and i still have thought they passed up a lot on the board to acquire a guy who had one solid year at A&M. Ouch on Chris Chambers.

Unless something happens to one of the top 4 receivers during PS, I don't think we need him. I don't think he would be an improvement over who we have now. JMHO!

One possibility is that the Houston Texans may sign him. Ferguson would then reunite with former Packers coach Mike Sherman, now the offensive coordinator with the Texans. Also - Ferguson is a native Houstonian and may take a reduction in pay to play for his hometown team. Anyone who follows the Packers probably already know that Ferguson had a very slim chance of sticking to the team roster, which more than anything hastened his departure from Green Bay. McCarthy also said, “I think it’s a number of factors. I feel good about what other guys are doing. I think Ruvell Martin has had an excellent camp, I think Carlyle Holiday has had a very good camp, and I think he really stepped out on special teams.”

Ferguson is known around the Packers as a hard worker, but he has been outshone by wideouts with lesser playing time than he. One can only hope that Ferguson can find a team to sign him, preferably by no later than the 4th week of the preseason. Oftentimes, a change of scenery benefits a player overall; let’s hope this is the case for Ferguson no matter which team signs him.
