Default Kubiak follows Walsh

I saw Michael Smith this afternoon on ESPN and they were talking about what Bill Walsh had brough to the game over the years. Smith brought up that Walsh had done what Kubiak is doing now with drafting defence every year until he dominated that side of the ball.

This comforted me as to know the method Kubiak has put in.

Considering the direct lineage - Walsh > Shanahan > Kubiak - the direction and decisions we've been making should not surprise anyone. Offensive minded coaches believe that they can spot talent as diamonds in the rough, and then polish them into gems. Walsh perfected the mentality, and it has spawned numerous successful coaches as a result. There is no reason not to believe that it can't happen with Kubiak's team, too.

Makes sense. Seems like Shanahan drafts defense first every year.

Kubiak has a long way to go to match what Walsh accomplished, but he has shown a lot of potential, here`s hoping that a few years and Superbowls down the road they are mentioned in the same sentence.

I hate to sound contrary here and I really like Gary Kubiak....

Even if Kubiak wins more Superbowls over his career than Walsh. You can not mention him in the same sentence as Walsh.

Bill Walsh was one of those guys that comes around once in a generation. Think about it. The man practically reinvented the game of football. He invented the West Coast Offense. Because of his offensive schemes, the Cover 2 defense was born. Bill Walsh was the Albert Einstein of football. It staggers the mind what he accomplished during his 15 year NFL career.

Could Kubiak or another coach reach that status? Sure. However, it will take a lot more than multiple Super Bowl rings to do so.

We lost a football genius yesterday. Just my $.02. That and $.98 more will get you a cup of coffee @ McDonalds.

Genius does not always win championships. Walsh was a great coach, plain and simple. In this league you get judged by rings and in the Super Bowl era there are four prominent names - Noll, Gibbs, Walsh and Belichick.

If Kubiak gets three, then he better be in the discussion because it will be three with the Texans.

Even though Tom Landry only won two rings, he belongs in any group of all time greats. He did go to five super bowls. When I think head coach, Tom Landry's image always pops up in my head.

Michael Smith really seems to like the Texans right now. He was on another ESPN show picking us as the AFC 'sleeper' team that will surprise everyone.

Obviously we all hope he's right!

Well said and great post. His mark on football completely changed some fundamental ways the game is played. We forget that 'modern' NFL football is not that old, and it wasn't that long ago that running the ball was the overwhelming majority of the game. Enter Johnny Unitas to revolutionize what a QB could do, and then add Bill Walsh's genius to show what coaching and schemes could accomplish, and the game we know today is fully realized.

They need to name some kind of offensive-minded award after him, IMO. Lombardi rightfully has the Championship trophy, but Walsh is up there close in my mind.

I agree. I've never been a Cowboys fan, but I've always recognized and respected the greatness of Tom Landry. He is another coach that implemented systems to upgrade the modern game, and is one of the NFL's legends.

Think about the coaching staff of the Giants in the mid 50's. Tom Landry as the defensive coordinator and Vince Lombardi as the offensive coordinator.
