Default How do you like me now? As Falcons get hounded, Vick's former backup QB enjoys Texas

Houston

Had some pre-draft day intrigue not delivered him here to the Texans, Matt Schaub would have been smack in the middle of the Falcons' toxic cleanup. He would have been the one in the hazardous materials suit and a helmet, scrubbing for all he was worth behind center.

Instead, Schaub's NFL training camp opened Friday as peaceably as these things can. No protesters outside carrying on curbside symposiums on due process. No ugly-banner-toting airplane circling overhead.

Wouldn't matter even if there were - Schaub wouldn't have seen it. Here in saturated south Texas, they moved the first practices indoors. He officially began his new life in a bubble - how's that for a symbolic contrast?

Seldom has the Houston Texans' quarterback been considered a lucky soul. Until now.

"No, I don't look at it that way," the former Falcons backup quarterback said when asked if he was glad to be a time zone away from the Michael Vick fallout.

"I say I'm glad to be here and glad to have this opportunity in Houston and be part of this organization that's growing and is going to do a lot of good things this year and years to come."

He has passed the diplomacy test.
