Kevin Barry won’t play for the Green Bay Packers this season, but it might feel that way.

Barry, the former Park High School standout whom the Packers released in May, signed a contract with the Houston Texans Friday morning. Russell Wittman, Barry’s agent, said his client signed a one-year deal. Wittman wouldn’t disclose the amount of the contract.

“Kevin’s elated and I’m elated,” Wittman said. “It’s good to see Kevin in camp on time. That’s very important. And the other positive thing is that Houston’s offense is similar to the one they had in Green Bay. He should be able to pick it up fairly quick.”

Houston’s offense resembles Green Bay’s because of the Texans assistant coach and offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, the former Packers head coach. Sherman used Barry as a blocking tight end in Green Bay’s “U-71” offensive package, a formation named after Barry’s uniform number with the Packers.

Obviously, this is in response to Spencer having to be put on the PUP list.

“Kevin could play guard, but they’re talking about using him at either left or right tackle,” Wittman said. “They definitely need help at either of the tackle spots. I think that’s good for Kevin because I think he’s more of a natural tackle than guard.”

Does anyone know if Winston is getting any reps at LT?

I am hoping that these x's can atleast add quality depth (given the lack of it we have had).

I don't know the payscale they are getting compared to their potential playing time

He's started 8 games in 5 years. Sounds like camp fodder.

I hope not. A TE who will probably be cut before the end of camp* is hardly a solution to the weak LT position. Especially since it is absolutely no surprise Spencer isn't ready to go.

You'll have to explain that a bit further. We'll keep three TEs, Bruener, Daniel, and whoever wins out between Putzier, Presser, & Ben Steele. That's a given. Are you saying we'll only keep two TEs?

Now if this new guy bumps Brandon Frye off the squad I'll be a bit disappointed. I think Frye has lots up upside, just like Studdard.

Agreed. Maybe this guy helps them run a certain package that the Texans did not currently have the players for.

I rather like him at RT. I'd rather have a veteran at LT, even if its Salaam.

Barry has the pure physical talent to be a beast, but is injury prone, which is why he only started a few games. He could be a good back up that can play everything but Center.

I guess that's what I didn't understand. The poster that started this thread covered that scenario...

Plus Bruener's forte' is blocking. So with Bruener at one TE and this guy (assuming he makes the squad - that's not a given) at the other TE I think short ydg formations are covered.
