His intense offseason conditioning program had an unintended consequence though. The 6-foot-6 player dropped almost 15 pounds to 280.

"I've slimmed down a little bit," he said. "I didn't try to. It just came along with doing more stuff."

Earlier and in another thread several of us had quite a discussion about Mario weight. Anyway, this is a relavant follow-up on that discussion in the light of
Mario slimming down, though he says it was unintentional.
But now that he's moving to the weakside from the strongside, quickness is even more important and I definitely like the sounds of the new Mario-lite.

If he still has the strength like last year....that is going to be absolutely scary for an offense to account for. All he needst odo is learn to use his hands better and we've got something brewing for opposing offenses.

I don't think players should be obsessed with a number. Just get in the best shape you can get into. If the coaches put you in the best position for your body type the players should just get in the best shape possible.

Mario is going to be a beast. If he is just a little quicker/faster and better with his hands, then offsenes...beware.

I think that the coaches use the number more as if you're losing weight then it means you're losing muscle ie. muscle weighs more than fat. If someone comes in and loses 15 lbs then could be equivillant to losing 25 lbs of muscle.... thats my only guess?

Exactly, technique is the key for Mario right now in his development!

With two healthy feet AND 15 fewer pounds, he should be A LOT quicker.

His technique is the main thing i'm concerned about. I think he was quick enough last year. His technique,in particular when he tried other moves besides the bull rush, just looked awkward. Part of it can be contributed to him being a rookie but i hope that's all it was.

I think this might help him in the long run with his feet though. Less to lug around and all that...
