Default Anthony Weaver on 610

There's a podcast on 610's website.

http://www.sportsradio610.com/

Tidbits:

-really like Jethro, kinda throws Coach Karm under the bus
-expects D-Line to be the best group on the team
-talks about rehab

etc.

I caught most of that and thought it was a good, honest interview. He is turning in to a real find for GM Smith.

Actually, Waever was a Casserly & Kubiak signing. Smith was named GM a few months later.

You might be thinking of Anthony Maddox (who was a nice find by Smith).

IMO, he did not throw anyone under the bus. Weaver thought Karm would be a very good coach working with veteran players. He said with the amount of youngsters we have along the line Jethro is the better fit due to the way he coaches. He coaches basic fundamentals and technique along with everyday coaching. Which is essential for young players.

Having said that, Weaver might have wanted to throw Karm under the bus. IMO, Weaver is above that kind of riff-raff. He's a very intelligent and well spoken fellow.

I'd hope this is the case, considering we've drafted a defensive lineman in the first round for the past four drafts.

I'd be happy if they were considered in the top half of lines, much less a top ten unit. They've got a big swing to make, though, as they never had any consistent pressure last year and the run did not fear them.

I think the presence of a young stud like Okoye is going to do wonders for this line. Sure, he won't be this year what he will be in 2-3 years as he matures, but I just think he will be disruptive enough to really boost the line play this year.

the only funny thing about this statement, is that its the exact same line we've heard for the last 5 years. "<Insert new rookie DL here> will really help the line" is becoming the new "give them time to gel"

Think about it, you could replace Amobi Okoye with Babin, TJ, Mario, etc and the line has probably been said by someone at least once in the past few years.

That being said, I have high hopes for our DL with Amobi in the middle. Lets hope we can get some attitude going and really turn it around

I guess some have said it, but not me. I wasn't sold on Babin or TJ in particular. I thought they were reaches at the time, and I continue to think so.

I wasn't a huge Mario fan either, at least not as a #1 overall. I just didn't see that quick twitch quickness and suddeness that the best edge rushers have. I like his game as an overall solid DE, but you don't take a guy #1 overall at that spot unless you feel he can be a beast at rushing the QB. I think he will be above avg at that once he matures fully, but I don't expect him to avg 15 sacks a year for his career. We shall see. I still think he may be best suited inside, but it will never happen due to his draft position.

I personally was higher on Okoye coming out then any of the aformentioned players, including Mario, and yes that was before we drafted him. Since we have yet to see him play, I may be sticking my neck out, but I see a total disrupter in the middle of the line, especially as he matures. We need to watch this big fella over the next 2-4 years. I would place a bet that he will be a performer in the Warren Sapp mold. Where Mario is fast, Okoye is cat quick. He has a suddeness to his game that I just don't see in Mario. If what I see on film translates to the NFL and matures, he will be a penatrator and interior pass rusher - a very rare combo.

I just see this as apples and oranges. I know others said these things for TJ, Babin, et al, but I think that was wishful thinking and bluster, things I don't get caught up in. I give my honest analsyis in as least homerist way as possible.

You guys keep posting this and leaving out the important bit..." and although two of them are well on their way to being monumemntal busts for first rounders"...that little qualifier thingy makes a big difference. The fact they've gone slumming for six years at the o-line ought to give any reasonable person a clue. Babins is too light and slow to play with his knuckles on the ground. And Travis is just Travis. Yeah they were taken in the first round. The facts are they don't play like first rounders. They both suck and there is nothing the club can do about it untill their contract's runs thier course. So don't post that sheet anymore. It's just silly.

I really like Weaver as a person but think is future is brighter in radio & television. if the Texans manage to get a couple more productive years out of him I'll take that right now.

I was hoping Mario Williams would be another Bruce Smith, maybe in time but I think his natural position is DT in the NFL. having said that I see the Texans keeping him @ DE just strongside when Weaver retires instead of the weakside.

Amobi is very explosive. During his strength & conditioning I hope they target his natural playing weight (around 280) I think he could swing outside & get some very positive results.

I like Maddox & a combination of Thomas Johnson (not Travis) & Alfred Malone they're both bangers/space eaters.

so as threetoedpete dictates just because Babin & Travis where 1st rd. picks neither may play a significant role in the Texans future.

Actually, what I remember from the past few years is:

Babin: We gave up WHAT? For WHO?!
TJ: WHO?! What about Marcus Spears? What about Derrick Johnson?!
Mario: Oh, Vince, oh Reggie, I pine for ye!

So I don't know that we're actually hearing the banging of the same drum over and over again.

I just wonder how many games Okoye will get before the faithful start dogging him like they did Mario last year.

I remember some of the nicknames people were giving him four or five games into the season.

I sensed some unhealthy disconnects between teacher and students last year. I think part of the problem was solved by moving Robaire. Another part of the problem was solved by moving Karm and bringing in Jethro. A part of the problem still exists but it can be managed one way or another.

Defensive Line is one of the toughest position transitions from college to the NFL.

IMO there is some significant differences between the cost-benefits realized of Babin vs TJ.
First off TJ was #16 in the first round whereas Babin was #27. Significant difference in their costs. While somewhat productive, Babin has been a disappointment but certainly not a bust though clearly a reach at 27. But TJ is now a marginal out and out bust and not worthy of a 1st day pick let alone 1st round material.
We gave them both time, 2 years is more than enough except for a QB, and that's why this year is so critical as we find out if Mario was an incredible reach or truly one of last years top draftees who just had a slower beginning to his career, in part do to injury.

Oh I agree 100%. IMO, Bush and Franklin are an awesome addition to our coaching staff. I suppose TJ is our "problem that still exists"? I think TJ's career is in serious jeopardy due to Robaires "mentorship".

I was merely pointing out to the poster that I highly doubt Weaver was "throwing anyone under the bus".

in babin's defense, he was drafted to convert to the LOLB spot in a 34. and he did lead the team in sacks last year after his first year back on the line. im not going to predict double digit sacks or anything too bold, but if he can improve this year (like i expect everyone to do - including mario, weaver, and maddox) we will see positive results for everyone.

TJ is another story. and its not a happy story.

Don't post the truth anymore because it's 'silly'?

Since when has a contract prevented the Texans from cutting a player? We've got $30 million in dead cap space from cutting players that were still under contract!

It is relevant that they were drafted in the first round, because 1) they are paid as such, and 2) it indicates the Texans have had the defensive line as a priority for awhile, and 3) the talent was there to pick them up in the first, so there is still hope that they will rise to the occasion.

Babin has not yet been labeled a 'bust'. He was our sack leader last year.

TJ...he's just fat & lazy so far, and about ready for the 'bust' label...but yet, here he is, still on our roster. I don't think his contract will keep him on the team, though. So please don't post something as silly as that when our history clearly indicated otherwise.

Very relevant point. I'm still of the opinion that Babins natural position in the
NFL is as a 3-4 OLB.

I think TJ is a better DT than Babin is a DE.

I would have liked them to ask Babs to lose some weight and play SLB for us...

I think Babin has the potential to be a good edge rusher, but I don't see him as a guy that we'd want to get significant minutes at DE at any point in his career...He's too easily moved by O-linemen in running situations and for me, a WDE that can rush the passer well and be a rock against the run is a huge asset...

As far as TJ is concerned, I actually like his game...I think he's a bit lazy and such, but I do think he's capable of being a good ball player for this team....Before he got hurt last year I felt really good about his play...He was making some plays down the line and getting good penetration...He wasn't a rock against the run, but since he was playing the 3 technique it's almost expected that he will have some bad moments in the run game...
