Default Texas-Sized Expectations

Leading up to the start of Training Camps in July, we are taking a team-by-team tour with fantasy previews for each NFL squad. We'll detail the key offseason moves, position battles to watch, and other things to keep an eye on as the clubs prepare for the season ahead.

Notable Offseason Moves: Status quo clearly wasn't working in Houston, so to kick things off the Texans made a play for the hottest quarterback on the market. With Matt Schaub acquired from the Falcons, former first-overall pick David Carr became expendable. Houston then jettisoned Domanick Williams—you may remember him as Domanick Davis—after signing Ahman Green in free agency. Pessemists were quick to point out that either move could have been avoided by drafting Reggie Bush or Vince Young last year, but the Texans prefer to look forward rather than back. The offense's other two areas of need—a viable second option alongside Andre Johnson and help for an offensive line that surrendered 43 sacks, second lowest in franchise history but still among the worst 10 efforts in the league—went largely unaddressed. Eric Moulds wasn't the answer at receiver, so third-round pick Jacoby Jones may be asked to do more than he's prepared for. The line added former Chief Jordan Black, lost Zach Wiegert, and drafted Brandon Frye in the fifth round; quite frankly, this unit needs more help than that, especially if Charles Spencer can't return from the knee injury that cost him the bulk of his rookie season.

Great post. I think this is a pretty good, if factious, read. The two best points are that the Texans have made mistakes but are trying to look forward, and they could still use a lot of help.

Good post. Surprised virtually nothing was said of the defense or need to improve special teams.
