Anybody else catch John "Hollywood" McClain on SR 610 today from 4:30 - 6:00PM ?
He says he thinks LT Charles Spencer will come out for TC, but end being assigned to PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) and therefor not come back with a chance to be on the roster until the Oct-Nov time period. McClain also predicted that Mario will step up this year now that he's no longer a rookie and has been assigned to a single position: personally I won't be satisfyed with anything less than double digit sacks in 2007 - that is why we are paying him the Big Bucks. And McClain says that Schaub gets to work at Reliant Stadium every morning about 5:30 AM or so, even before early bird Kubiak arrives. |

I heard it and wouldn't take it as gospel. McClain has been wrong about plenty of things. Spencer sounds like he's very determined to get his job back in training camp.

Well it's definitely NOT what me and many other wanted to hear in regards to Charles Spencer. I really hope McClain is wrong on this. I won't be surprised though if it happens. We don't really know what's going on and I'm not so sure even the coaching staff does. I guess we'll have to just wait and see...

Some posters here have been saying this for a while now. I have not had an expectation of Spencer playing at a competitive level this year, if at all. Most likely not at all.
By the way, are you missing a "not" in here?

Folks really need to separate when McClain says "I have heard" or "sources say" from "I think" because usually he is pretty good on the first two and on the latter he is speaking out his sphincter. McClain is a source guy, not an acumen guy and usually when he has a source he says so.

Is it true about Schuab? If so, mane he seems really dedicated to take advantage of the starting time he is going to get. I like to hear things like that, how he get there BEFORE the HC does...wow.

I laughed when McClain said the Eagles would use one of their 2nd rounders on Kolb too.

I don't think this is a big stretch either way and is a pretty lukewarm prediction (if you would consider it a prediction). If he had wanted to make a bold statement, he would have said either Spencer is going to be out the entire season or back in time for preseason. I think Spencer will have a hard time getting back. But then again, I have heard it both ways. I have heard that he is having a hard time, and I have heard he is recovering well.

Then, it would make the speculation more feasible than impossible!?

I refuse to speculate on Spencer's playing time next year.
He won't have any.

In 2 posts in this thread alone, you've made some very grim predictions about Spencers future in the NFL ? Basically and very bluntly, you've said he doesn't have one. And you seem very confidant about it ?

I would not be suprised if he ends up with microfracture surgery. (No I'm not a doctor, yes I have an opinion). NBA players come back from that at partial speed the next year, but it takes them a couple of years to get close to 100%. They put a lot of stress on their legs too, albeit in a different manner. I'm very pleased the coaching staff is planning to move on without him. They've showed the ability to learn. ![]() Unfounded expectations run very high this time of year, and when they aren't met, players are labeled busts and fans want to fire the coaches. More reasonable expectations for individual players may make for happier fans. I'm not saying to be satisfied with slight improvements for the team as a whole, I just think it is silly to fall into traps such as expecting players to be in the Pro Bowl after their second pre-season game against the second strings of other teams (i.e. Spencer last year). Everything I've heard about Spencer is he's a good guy, he does good things for his family, etc. A real solid citizen. I wish him success.

I would rather be safe than sorry and have Spencer take his time to get back. No since in rushing him back this year when we went after so much depth at the position, I mean the FO prepared as if he wouldn't be back anyway.

"So what does that mean for the Texans? It means that Ephraim Salaam better button the hat up tight and get ready to protect the man worth two second round picks."
***** Runner, looks like you pretty much nailed it for what's very possibly going to happen with Spencer in 2007, right down to observing that he's not kept his weight under control. But what I copied/pasted from Zerlein's Blog above is a reminder of what should make us all real nervous. I'm of the thinking that an Oline, any Oline, can be only as good as its LT and lets face it, Salaam is a good team guy and all of that, but he's been on the down-side of his career for awhile now and 2007 will probably be marked by a continued regression in his physical skills and that's bad news for Schaub and the Texans. |

Look, If he's on PUP, I'd be thrilled. The issue with him isn't whether he can play 16 games this year, it's whether he is permanently damaged goods or not. Black and Salaam anchoring the left side for 6 games is something I'd be fine with if the likelihood of Spencer coming back healthy was high.
What we don't want to see is the IR- that would indicate serious problems with his knee- PUP means they expect him back and contributing by the middle of the season. |
