Default Commander Schaub and other OTA musings...

Some interesting things posted at the offical site that I decided to pull over. These are just a few blurbs I found to be the most interesting for those that may not have seen it on the official site.

Link

Commander Schaub: Schaub continues to impress during OTA’s. Tuesday’s best pass was probably while the offense was working in the red zone. Looking the safety off the entire way, Schaub wheeled and threw a strike to Kevin Walter for a score.

Schaub’s physical gifts are evident daily, but his leadership skills are what is most striking about the Texans’ new signal caller. He really commands the huddle.

“I think that is his strength,” Kubiak said. “He is such in control with what he does and he can worry about all the other 10 guys. He hasn’t been in a situation with any noise with our team since he’s been here.

“And he walks out here at the end of practice and everybody is tired and he really took control of his group and moved them right down the field. I think that is his strength and we as coaches have got to play to that strength and as a team have to play to strength and put him in a position to lead that group. I think that’s what he does really well.”

In just a few weeks, Schaub has learned what his role in the offense is as well as all of his teammates. In recent days he’s been answering teammates questions which resonates as a sense of calm on the field.

“That is important because we’re young and the more that they can rely on that guy I think they all play better,” Kubiak said. “When Andre (Johnson) feels like he can go to him for the answer, and the tight end and the linemen and he is comfortable to give them that answer. I think that is going to make everybody a little bit better.

“Time will tell. But there has been some nice poise with him out here.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

“We’re going to practice with noise and we’re going to practice a lot of stuff like that to learn how to play on the road, to play at Indy, and play at Tennessee and play at places where we did not play very good. We have to get better from that standpoint.”

The offense seemed to have little trouble maneuvering in the noise as Matt Schaub led the offense down the field on more than one occasion. The period was highlighted by a long rushing touchdown from Ron Dayne and a tipped ball that was hauled in by Jacoby Jones, who then scampered close to 40 yards for an apparent score.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comfort level increases: Matt Schaub continues to show progress during each workout and Monday was no difference as deep passes were on the agenda for the offense. He rarely leaves the deep ball short and instead misses long, making it much easier for a receiver to make a play on the ball and not a defensive back.

Schaub said Monday he is growing increasingly comfortable with Houston’s offense.

“I’m feeling really comfortable,” Schaub said. “It’s a day to day thing, but we’re getting better every day. Watching the film and meeting and just talking with the guys and getting a good feel.

“We have most of the stuff in right now so we’re able to go back and repeat some of the things from the beginning of camp. I’m feeling really smooth and it’s coming together nicely.”

The new quarterback has also seen some improvement in his teammates, not just himself.

“A ton of improvement,” Schaub said. “Everyone is working hard and getting better. We are coming out with a purpose every day and focusing on situations and guys are working hard. As a whole group, we are competing with the defense and they are competing with us and we’re challenging each other every day.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gado impresses: At this point in the offseason, anyone who follows the Texans is aware of their situation at running back. After the position was one of the weakest prior to last season, it has emerged as the strongest heading into this season.

“We’ve got six guys lined up back there, including this young guy from Notre Dame (Darius Walker) that can play,” head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday. “The competition is exceptional and the work load is very even.”

Cleary all six won’t be on the roster when the Texans host the Chiefs Sept. 9 and it had been widely speculated that the quartet of Walker, Wali Lundy, Chris Taylor and Samkon Gado may be fighting for just one roster spot behind Ahman Green and Ron Dayne.

Since Gado is the eldest of the four, it seemed logical that he had the most ground to make up this offseason in order to keep his spot on the team. It appears he has made up the ground and perhaps more.

“I’m impressed with what he’s doing on the football field,” Kubiak said. “He reminds me, I told him the other day, I had Mike Anderson in Denver that had a rough year one year and then all of a sudden came back in the offseason and it was like he was possessed the way he practiced and worked.

“It was like holy smokes. You watch the kid out here practice right now and his effort on the field is incredible. He plans on getting something done. I would be very surprised if he doesn’t do it.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defense improving daily: Last year’s transition from a 3-4 scheme to a more traditional 4-3 attack took some time. Houston’s defense struggled during the first month of the season but by year’s end, the Texans defense was arguably one of the finest in the league.

Kubiak believes the defense is far ahead of where they were at this time a year ago.

“Its obvious that they are a lot more composed in what they’re doing in just understanding their base and what we want to do,” Kubiak said. “Last year we took a lot of chances, aggressive wise, as a defensive football team to try to help our team win, we felt like we had to do that.

“Hopefully we’re better personnel wise and being more sound going into year two where we feel like we can sit there and play our base defense and not feel like we have to take as many chances. But we will be aggressive.”

One player that played a huge role defensively over the final months of the 2006 season was Anthony Maddox. Maddox was plucked off the practice squad a year ago and made an immediate contribution.

Maddox was under the weather at the start of OTA’s, but is feeling much better now and Kubiak is expecting big thing from the defensive tackle.

“The biggest thing with Anthony is I think he’s feeling good,” Kubiak said. “He went through some issues at the start of OTAs where he wasn’t feeling well and some physical things that we got corrected. If you ask him he’s probably feeling about as good as he’s felt in the last couple years and he’s already a good football player.

“I think his health is only going to make him better and he’s been very impressive.”

Maddox has shed 10 pounds and claims to be even quicker off the ball. He’s also looking forward to playing with Houston’s latest first-round draft pick.

“I think Amobi (Okoye) is a great addition,” Maddox said. “He’s a young guy, quick, got a lot of energy. It’s going to be good to have him out there and playing with him, hopefully he’ll give me some of that energy. We’ll have a good time.”

Random thoughts:

1. The Texans PR folks need to stop pushing the Matt Schaub as leader thingy. It is getting almost silly. Hello, NFL QBs are supposed to command the huddle. Commanding the huddle during pre-pre-training camp not in pads without rushers wanting to kill you is not a great accomplishment.

2. I'm glad they are recognizing their play on the road was really substandard last year. IIRC, a lot of Hodgdon's play was on the road--double bad combo--players new to an offense with a newish overpowered center.

3. Interesting to see what comes out of the RB situation this year.

4. Maddox is one of those guys who is easy to root for.

It probably has a little bit to do with how our previous QB 'commanded' the huddle...

And getting the respect of your teammates is a great accomplishment. The PR folks aren't the only ones talking about how much control he has...Just about all the players when asked about Schaub say the same thing...

TC, I think on #1 it's like this.

Suppose you were dropped off in the desert and survived for 30 days on a bottle of water and a slice of bread, some cactus, and a rattlesnake that had been run over. You then were rescued and your first meal was hamburger helper, don't you think that would taste like gourmet food that first go around?

This also might be a good place to ask if anyone has seen Flanigan's comments on Channel 13 the last couple of nights?

I will see if his quote is somewhere, but basically he said that when he got here last year, he felt like it was his huddle by day 2 of OTA's, but that this year, it's totally different.

They also had a bizarre interview with Carr and asked him why he was wearing gloves in Carolina. He said it's because his fingers get too close to the centers butt, and then he has to lick his fingers, and so he wanted to cover them. Did anyone else see this? It was a really weird way to answer the question.

I like hearing about Schaub being a leader, because it's a breath of fresh air. We now have a QB that understands that he is supposed to be the default leader, and beyond just knowing his own role, he's also learning everyone else's so he can *ahem* lead.

Quote:
Schaub’s physical gifts are evident daily, but his leadership skills are what is most striking about the Texans’ new signal caller. He really commands the huddle.

“I think that is his strength,” Kubiak said. “He is such in control with what he does and he can worry about all the other 10 guys. He hasn’t been in a situation with any noise with our team since he’s been here.
I think it is constantly brought up simply because it is one of his strengths. While I reserve myself from getting too excited about quotes from OTAs, saving a grain of salt to take them with, we are hearing phrases and terms that are new to us as Texans fans.

I suppose it is sad to say that we get excited to hear our HC talk about such mundane things regarding our QB taking control, understanding the system, inspiring and teaching his teammates, but then again, a change of personnel can do that to a fanbase. These would not be issues if they weren't issues before Schaub arrived.

Quote:
“Its obvious that they are a lot more composed in what they’re doing in just understanding their base and what we want to do,” Kubiak said. “Last year we took a lot of chances, aggressive wise, as a defensive football team to try to help our team win, we felt like we had to do that.

“Hopefully we’re better personnel wise and being more sound going into year two where we feel like we can sit there and play our base defense and not feel like we have to take as many chances. But we will be aggressive.”
Man, I'm really stoked about our potential on defense. Taking away the debacle that was our first six games last year, we ended up having a great, emerging D. I've even refrained from talking smack about Richard Smith after stepping back and looking at the big picture. While I'm not a fan of certain decisions he's made last year, I think he's making an impact. Now with upgraded & healthy players, along with adding Bush, I think the defense will carry some games while the offense figures itself out.

66 days until we play Chicago!

I could care less if we know who they, or any opponent, are, but that we know that our team is not the shell of a team we had the last five years.

So does he lick the glove now?

I've read that if you disregard our first six games, we were a top 10 defense during the last 10 games, FWIW.

Right, it's obviously because of david carr, and it's getting silly. Of course the players say the same stuff as the PR folks up in the F.O.... who do you think writes the players' prompts? I'm just as happy as the next texans fan that carr's finally gone, it's just that it seems almost tactless to mention schaub's leadership so often before he's played one down of regulation ball.

All I can say is that it is a GREAT feeling logging on to this board and reading positive comments, instead of all the negative we have had to deal with the past couple of years. I LOVE IT!! I don't care if we're giving positive strokes to the waterboy, it's da*n time we all started thinking positive.

NOW, prove your loyalty by showing up on Aug 11th, ready to show our guys how POSITIVE we are!!!! I hope everyone will be there when they introduce the players, and make Reliant rock!!!!

Well, I won't be in Reliant on August 11th to prove my loyalty.

However, on October 28th, my wife and I will be in full Texan Regalia and full voice at Qualcomm park taunting Chargers!

thats what i mean- we were at our best when we were taking chances (blitzing) on defence so why change it.. even in that top 10 stretch the D was still at its worst when we used to sit back in prevent situation

I totally understand where you're coming from in #1. I'm loving the positive exposure though. I agree with you 100% but I still like hearing it. Fluffed up PR it may be but it's one that I as a Houston Texans fan welcomes. I'm tired of being a cellar dweller and I'll take and welcome every last bit of fluff regarding Matt Schaub up until the 5th game of the season at the latest. Whether you like or not, Matt Schaub is the second coming here in Houston. Whether or not he's destined to be a failure or not, he's in charge right now and that's what I want to hear.
