Default Meachem having knee Examined

Wonder how much of a concern this was for teams passing on him? Of course I know nothing of this type of injury.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2892754

METAIRIE, La. -- "Saints first round draft pick Robert Meachem needs to have his right knee examined for a potential medial meniscus problem after he missed practices Sunday and Monday.

Head coach Sean Payton said after Monday's practice that the Saints knew about a possible minor meniscus problem before they drafted the former standout receiver at Tennessee 27th overall.

"After his exam I'll know a little bit more, but it started to get to the point where it was hampering him [Sunday afternoon] running," Payton said. "We backed him off yesterday and the same way this morning."

Meachem also missed portions of rookie camp the weekend after the draft when he sprained his left ankle.

He has surgery yesterday

"Saints' first-rounder has surgery New Orleans first-round draft pick Robert Meachem underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, according to the NFL web site.

Meachem injured his knee at Sunday's minicamp practice. Coach Sean Payton will comment on the injury today."

The surgery went fine, it's a pretty simple procedure. As minor as a surgery with the words "knee" and "ligament" and/or "cartilage" can be I think.

He's supposed to back and ready to roll for the start of training camp, so just in time for Payton to run his tail off at the sweatshop that is our training camp in Jackson, Miss. I would imagine he'll lose some valuable "get in shape to impress in camp" time between here and there, but the security of being a first round pick helps him here.

Frankly, even if he isn't ready in time, we aren't really hurting at the WR position. This may even give some of the other young, unproven guys even more of an opportunity to show the staff something in camp.

If things work out for Meachem then you can send us this guy.

After all, I did find him first...

That's all good. I hope the guy does well. It is just an area you don't want to hear about for your 1st rounder...especially a skill guy.

Haha. Great call man. I found that thread especially interesting not only because of Colston but because the first name that was brought up was Mike Hass, the WR from Oregon who won the Belitnekoff (sp?) award the year before. For those who don't know, we drafted Hass in the sixth round, and then turned around and grabbed Colston with our second pick in the seventh.

The thing is, this time last year everybody over on the Saints board was ga-ga over Mike Hass and Colston was an enormous afterthought. People were projecting Hass as the future #2 left and right and a great compliment to Horn. Turns out, he doesn't get 1/4 of the reps that Colston got in camp/preseason and got cut (actually refused to go on our PS opting to join the Bears PS instead hoping to earn a roster spot that year; he didn't).

Shows how much we, as fans, really know most of the time.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not pleased or excited about our 1st rounder coming into minicamp out of shape, spraining an ankle, then having to have knee surgery. He should have been more disciplined than that. It's just that tend to not get all bent out of shape about these things, especially when the consequences are relatively minimal. Had this type of thing occurred at a more critical, less deep position, perhaps my worry factor would be ratcheted up a notch or two.
