Default Joe Paterno is my new hero....

I wish every coach and every human being for that matter, had the class, integerity, and honor that Joe Paterno has. He is my new coaching hero. Here is 3 cheers for Joe Paterno!

I don't usually post an entire article, but this one is so uplifting and so good, that I hope an exception is ok.

Taking out the trash

By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports
May 22, 2007

This spring, six Penn State football players were arrested and charged for crimes stemming from an off-campus fight April 1 in which at least 15 Nittany Lions were present. The charged included a couple of star players, although what apparently bothered coach Joe Paterno the most was how many of his kids were willing to be involved.

And so Paterno, 80 now but no less tough, no less disciplined, hatched a plan to set things right within his program. He'll let the local legal and student judicial process play out, but regardless he decided that to keep people from thinking his team was trash, it'll spend the fall cleaning it up.

According to Paterno, the Penn State football team will clean Beaver Stadium after each home football game this fall. It'll gather garbage, sweep stairs and maybe even hose parts down.

It'll be Notre Dame on Saturday, nacho spills on Sunday.

It's a job that usually goes to members of club sports on campus – say, rugby or crew – which do it to raise money so they can compete. Paterno said the clubs still will get the $5,000 for the job, but his guys, fresh off playing 60 minutes of major college football the day before, will do all the work starting Sunday morning.

"We're all going to do it, everybody," Paterno told the Harrisburg Patriot-News after a banquet in suburban Philadelphia. "Not just the kids that were involved. 'Cause we're all in it together. This is a team embarrassment. I wouldn't call it anything much other than that."

This is easily the greatest punishment in recent collegiate history, an absolutely diabolical, telling, high-impact bit of discipline that should remind one and all that what Paterno has been doing out in State College, Pa., all these years is more than just win 363 football games, including 20 the past two seasons.

In a coaching business so full of phonies who talk character only to bend the rules, who consider the definition of discipline a player's weight-room attendance, who wouldn't dare pull something like this because it might hurt recruiting, here's Joe Pa, four decades on the job and not giving a damn.

Except about what's right.

The incident was as simple as it was ugly. One player, Anthony Scirrotto, and his girlfriend were insulted and Scirrotto punched by passers-by on the street, according to the police. Ultimately, Scirrotto called some teammates, they rushed an off-campus party where the passers-by were and a brawl ensued. More players showed up later.

"He got a little irate, called up a couple of his buddies and said, 'Hey, come on down,' " Paterno said. "They went over there and they got in a fight."

Who was right and who was wrong still is being sorted out by the judicial system. Not by Paterno, of course. The details don't seem to matter to him. Rather than figure out which individuals did what, who arrived when, he decided to hammer the entire team, if for nothing less than lacking the leadership to stop the incident from getting out of hand.

On college campuses where football stars often are treated to a lower standard, Paterno is going, once again, for a higher one.

"I just thought that, hey, we had 14, 15 kids – I don't even know how many – that were involved in something embarrassing, and I think that we need to prove to people that we're not a bunch of hoodlums," he said.

The entire team also will have to build a house for Habitat for Humanity and volunteer for the Special Olympics this summer. But the worst punishment no doubt will be cleaning up Penn State's mammoth 107,282-seat stadium.

A job usually left for others now will be done by Penn State's multimillion-dollar football team. Paterno can't see how this is any different. All the kids on campus are the same, so if the rugby team can find the energy to clean the stadium, so can his guys.

"I don't condone (the fight)," Paterno said. "Our kids were wrong."

And across the nation college football coaches faint.

Most coaches have spent their offseason complaining about not being able to text butt-kissing messages to recruits. They no sooner would wear out their players on an off day with garbage picking than give up their country club memberships.

At too many places in college football, the kids never are wrong. Punishments often are things that actually help the team: more running, early-morning weightlifting. It is rarely public, rarely embarrassing and never, at least to my knowledge, a blanket shot across the entire team, a true call for leadership and shared values.

But this is why Joe Paterno is Joe Paterno

He isn't worried about hurt feelings. He isn't worried about potential recruits. He isn't worried about guys sacking garbage on Sunday morning.

He's worried about the reputation of his players, his program and his school. He's worried about cleaning things up immediately, starting with the stadium.

Good questions, but if I had a kid that could play football at a high level, I would love to have Joe Paterno coach him. The lessons he is teaching these kids go way beyond football, and are life long.

Very true, but in todays day and age, I am worried about a lot of these kids not wanting to go play at place where they actually expect you to be a responsible young man... This is in total contradiction to a lot of these kids coming out of HS with a real sense of entitlement....

JoePa, should be commended as he and Bobby Bowden are the last of the really old school coaches...

No doubt the parents will appreciate it...

But I'm not going to even lie....Coming out of highschool, as a seventeen yr. old, that would have worried me a little..... I know there are a lot of guys that age that can see past that, but I wasn't one of them.....

I just wonder if he considered the incoming draft class or if he was just like screw it, they're gonna do it too....

Either way its a good thing that he's doing it.....it's a good way to keep all of that non-sense in check....

I will agree with you on half of what you said. Free shoe U does not have a high grad rate and I think they do get away with more than at some other schools. I can say with all honesty, if I had a child that played sports he would not goto Ohio State or Miami, because I would not give dime to him if he went there.

Joe Pa gets my respect for doing this.

Joe Paterno has established one of the most spotless records in the nation concerning both student conduct & graduation success (I believe PSU was ranked 3rd nationaly in student athlete graduation rates in 06). While I respect his program & his decision in this matter its very old school as is the conservative nature of the football team. I try to watch some Penn State football each year because they always seem to have some excellent NFL prospects (Levi Brown for instance) his legacy & tradition will remain intact.

I'd commend you for it. But if you've followed the way college recruiting has been tranformed over the past 5-10 years, you'd know a lot of the top recruits already have a sense of entitlement.

It's true about the parents loving Joe Pa. The parents of a couple top recruits loved him and wanted their kids to commit to Penn State. Unfortunately, their sons didn't feel the same way and went for Pete Carroll's bait, hook, line, and sinker.

Damn! Sorry, Texan Bill. I need to read these posts more carefully, so I don't retread ground already covered.

why in the hell, if you are a high school senior reading this right now, would you put penn state on the list of schools to consider? Why? answer me that. If my choices are the school where the coach is bat**** crazy and throwing massive cleaning and community service projects, or the school where the senior class players are getting me drunk and plying me with women, i'm going for the girls! He can do whatever he wants to, but i GUARANTEE that next years Penn State class is nowhere near the caliber of recruits of other schools. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

You would be surprised at what this will actually do for recruiting. It says football is more important than a couple idiots screwing it up so the program is put on probation and not winning. You go ahead and go for the girls and you will not make it to the next level. If your a LB or a RB your going to look long and hard at Penn State.

I'm sorry, but if you think that in this day and age thats going to do anything but screw the next few penn state recruiting classes i don't know what to tell you. My generation doesn't want to work any harder then it absolutely has to.

Sadly I'm going to have to (for the most part) agree...

When I went on my recruiting trips all of the schools raved about their academics and showed statistical data to back up their graduation rates...all of them talked about how good of an atmosphere it was...all of them talked about how the football program was into making sure we did our school work...all of them talked about how their programs helped mold young men into upstanding citizens...

So what was I left with ? .......the school I had the most fun at.....Mind you I had just turned 17 when I started my recruiting trips...

Of course the choice is easy if you're picking between Penn State and Lane college...

but if the programs/schools are similar prestige wise I'm going to have to say that the fact that I would have to pick up trash after every home game + a bunch of other stuff I wouldn't have been interested in a college freshman was being given out as a form of punishment that happened between a select few players on the team a whole year before I got there...

I'm going to have to say I'd have passed on that school and went to Notre Dame, or USC, or even Michigan...

Where are the parents during this process? If my kid was 17, you better believe I am going to have a big say in where he goes to school. At the very least, I know I would have respected my parents enough to give great weight to their opinion. Most atheletes don't even make the NFL, and even if my kid was that good, it would be more important to me to mold my kid into the best human being possible moreso than the best football player possible. Fortunetly, with Paterno both of those are likely to happen.

Would you be all that upset if your child chose Notre Dame, or USC, or Michigan over Penn State ?

Picking up trash doesn't have to be the sole decision for not attending that school, but it's certainly a strike..it's definitely not a positive...

If it's a close decision between PS and another school, I'm thinking the prospect of picking up trash (and knowing you'll be playing for a head who'll hand out these kind of punishments) would be the tipping point...

As a prospect I'd feel better about it if he suspended those involved or flat out kicked them off the team...He'd still be upholding his standards without the exspense of making all others suffer for the actions of a few...

I'm just saying as an incoming recruit that has got to weigh into your decision...especially since you weren't even enrolled when said events happened...

They parents of the two recruits I mentioned were very involved in the recruiting process, visiting the campuses and meeting the respective coaches. But the kids were swayed by different factors and chose USC. In one case, the kid sent in a letter of intent with a fake parent’s signature, the other delayed a presser to go home and change gear. The parents were not pleased, but ultimately they just wanted their kids to go where they would be happy and acquiesced.

Paterno himself believes the program is not for everyone. He’s turned down a couple 4 and 5 star recruits in the past that hadn’t met certain commitments he set. I don't know that I necessarily agree with his punishment, but this doesn’t change much imo.
