Default Impressions from OTA's, Carmine Pirone blog

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/blogs.asp?post_id=153

One week of OTAís is over. The one thing that stuck out to me the last three days was the chemistry that the guys already seem to be enjoying on the field.

New players such as Matt Schaub and Shawn Barber have already become locker room favorites and Barberís ďuniqueĒ break down after stretching has been one of the highlights of each practice.

I guess itís my job to be an internal optimist when it comes to the Texans, so of course any opinion expressed here has to be taken with a grain of salt. However, itís hard to imagine the Texans not being a better team in 2007 than they were in 2006.

If you think about it, you would probably agree. This time last year, who was the Texans middle linebacker? Now, Houston employs one of the best in the league.

This time last year, who was Houstonís starting running back? Coach Kubiak said Friday that he thinks that running back is now one of the Texans deepest positions with Ahman Green leading the way.

Speaking of Green, heís looked fantastic so far. You would never know that this time last year, he was recovering from a relatively serious knee injury. Heís showing no signs of slowing down.

The one thing I like about Green is the way he walks off the field. What does that mean? If you look at a lot of these guys when theyíre not moving full speed, many walk favoring one side or with a slight hitch in their step. Not Green.

I see him walk in every morning and not once yet have I seen him favor a sore knee, a tight hamstring or even a stubbed toe. That has to be a good sign.

That could be because of his unique way of warming up for practice which Green talked about with Jim Carley here.

Of course the other high profile offensive performer is Schaub. Heís really got a classic delivery and even in windy conditions for much of the week, he didnít seem to have trouble throwing a tight spiral.

His performance was inconsistent, but you would expect that with a new quarterback. I think by mini-camp in mid-June, Schaub will be clicking on all cylinders.

Itís also been nice to see Mario back at full speed this week. He really is a freak of nature. He can run like a safety and is the biggest guy out there. Iím expecting big things from the defense this season.

OTAís continue next week.

I wonder how Jacoby Jones is doing.

Also what people seem to forget is Ahman Green is still a dang good running back. He was injured one season, and that one season was the only season he rushed for under 1,000 yards in the last seven seasons.

Rushing
Year Team G GS Att Yds Avg Lg TD 20+ 1st
1998 Seattle Seahawks 16 0 35 209 6.0 64 1 2 8
1999 Seattle Seahawks 14 0 26 120 4.6 21 0 1 12
2000 Green Bay Packers 16 11 263 1175 4.5 39 10 10 61
2001 Green Bay Packers 16 16 304 1387 4.6 83 9 11 57
2002 Green Bay Packers 14 14 286 1240 4.3 43 7 7 54
2003 Green Bay Packers 16 16 355 1883 5.3 98 15 15 96
2004 Green Bay Packers 15 15 259 1163 4.5 90 7 6 55
2005 Green Bay Packers 5 5 77 255 3.3 13 0 0 11
2006 Green Bay Packers 14 14 266 1059 4.0 70 5 3 55
TOTAL 126 91 1871 8491 4.5 98 54 55 409

Something tells me that we will see another 1,000 yard season from him.

Vandermeer had something on him in his blog entry. If you go to the HT site Jones is interviewed as well in one of the OTA vids, I believe it was yesterday's.

I will be surprised if Jones gets too much playing time this season. Unless he grasps the offense and his position in the NFL very quickly (in which case we have a steal of a pick), I think he'll do good to get on the field much of the early season.

Here's to hoping I'm wrong though!

I talked with someone at the All Access from the Texans whose opinion I respect.

He said that Jones looked like he belonged out there during OTAs so far. That he thinks he could be a player. It surprised him because he didn't have much as far as expectations for the guy.

They talked to Jacoby Jones last night on Fox Sports Sunday. They also talked to his college coach and he guaranteed he would have the kind of impact that Marques Colston had. Said he was a player. And to me the kid looked like he belonged. I am definately more pumped about him than I was.
