Green / Simmons - all kinda class

Now, make sure y'all don't read the title as Gene Simmons...

Texans running back Ahman Green asked around the locker room before he even approached Jason Simmons. Green wanted to know if he was wasting his time.

He didn't know Simmons well, and, even more importantly, he didn't know how attached the Texans safety was to the No. 30.

"Everybody was like, 'He's a good guy. He's going to work something out with you someway or somehow,' " Green said.

Green, who started wearing 30 even before attending Nebraska, became optimistic but still wasn't sure what it might cost him. The tradition around the NFL is that if you want someone else's number, you pay them.

When Green finally asked, Simmons shocked him.

"He said, 'Sure, but I'd like you to make a down payment on a single-parent home through a foundation or charity,' " Green said. "I was like, 'Yeah I'm all on board. That's easy. Tell me where to write the check to.'

"So instead of putting the money into his pocket, he's going to put in into somebody else's home and help them get their life started."....

..."It's kind of tough for me to take money from another guy," Simmons said. "I don't need that. We'll go out and help the community, because this city has stuck by us. If we can go out and show that we're with the community and we appreciate all that they've done, I think it's a good thing."....

I loved that segment on the OTA Day 2 video on the Main Texans site. It brought a tear to my eye. I love the guys that Houston has been getting. How many times have we hear of guys getting paid for their number, what the heck? At least something great has already come out of Green in Houston!

I wish the Chron would run more stories like this because I'm sure there are more out there. I'll say the one thing McNair has gotten right from the begining is the character of this team. There are a lot of good people here.

Saw this on 13News last night. Simmons showed a lot of class in doing this and this should help some disadvantaged families in our local community.

Great Piece, and like Hagar said, I wish they would run more stories like this as well. Show people that there aren't just Pacman, and TO types in the NFL.

I would love to see Schaub wear #7 but it aint gonna happen. I think Schaub likes #8 and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

I've always liked Jason as well. Saw a monsterous hit delivered in a game a few years back and asked, "Who laid that hit? #30?!" Liked him ever since.

By the way, OzzO.....I did think the title of this thread said Gene Simmons....ha ha. The old KISS fan in me rose up.
