Default Article "Why don't the Texans get it?"

Quote:
David Carr did what he could at quarterback, struggling to a sub-1:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio but completing 68.3 percent of passes; ultimately, Carr's rating was higher than that of guys named Hasselbeck, Favre, Vick and Alex Smith.

The defense, meanwhile, ranked middle of the pack against the run while finishing a mere 30th in interceptions.

So how does Smith, the current G.M., address these issues in a free-agent period when everyone -- including Houston -- has lots of bucks to blow? By signing Ahman Green? And Shawn Barber? Huh?

Only with the Texans -- steadily gaining a reputation as a Draft-Day choker -- could the first-round selection of Amobi Okoye be questioned. You've gotta wonder, though, why Houston sat back so passively. The Texans must have known Joe Thomas and Levi Brown wouldn't be on the board by pick No. 10, right?

Houston finally made a feeble attempt to address the offensive line "issues" with picks No. 163 and 183, going with Brandon Frye and Kasey Studdard. The latter may actually be a perceptive choice here, though he's low on the depth charts right now, to be sure. Frye is essentially a huge gamble.
Some "people" don't get it. Look for the comments below the article.

'eh, who cares. We'll be one of those teams that nobody gives a chance but surprises everyone.

I am fairly certain that Kubiak knows the importance of an offensive line, so I have to be confident that he's got it under control. Besides, having a QB with a clue can make an o-line look a lot better.

just another loser 'journalist' who blames everyone besides David Carr. I guess he still thinks Carr is good just because he was drafted #1 by a braindead ***** named Casserley. Being drafted #1 doesnt make you good. It makes you rich. Only hard work, true professionalism, and a drive to be the best can make you good. Carr never displayed these attributes while a member of the Texans.

hopefully the Texans will make all these talking heads eat large amounts of crow next year. this writer lost me when he criticized us for not moving up to take Brown or Thomas. We would have had to give up next years #1 to move up to #3 for Thomas and Brown projects more as a RT and has some injury questions. Okoye was the best player on the board. We drafted him. I thought it was funny how McShay had the Skins taking Okoye at #6 in his final mock draft but then slammed us for drafting him when he fell to #10. Just another hater.

Carr *edited*

I think we did pretty damn good all things considered, and we got Schaub and Green without having to overpay salary cap-wise and got rid of an albatross in Carr. Color me happy.

I know you said Carr was an albatross but he has to be a key loss. As bad as he was, he was our starting QB.

yep - I don't think it is sheer coincidence that we didn't draft a linemen on the first day of the draft and no team sought David Carr the FREE agent as a QB. Nobody had to give up a draft pick....but nobody wanted to sign him as anything more than a back up.

I care. I know it shouldn't matter but I AM getting tired of being the laughing stock of the league. I'm very happy with how the Texans have done things this off-season but I'm also banking on this changing the franchise around and ending all negative speculations. I'd just really like to see us being put forth in a positive light in the media for a change. The Texans are my team and they will not be dismissed easily.

He was only our starting QB because the owner of the team was behind the decision.

Being a starting QB does not automatically mean that you're an asset. Just ask Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson after they won Super Bowls and were jettisoned from their teams the next season.

I've seen one-celled amoebas that were more insightful than this guy. A dried pinto bean could come up with better than that garbage.

Inaminate objects could outscore him in an intelligence test.

Nuff said.

I dont have a problem with the article about our O Line (although it is getting a bit redundant and this writer gets a 0 out of 10 for originality), but afew things jumped out at me that made me scratch my head. Problem 1 is that this article makes it seem like O Line is the biggest need for any team in the NFL and our only problem on the team which is by all means untrue. Is it just me or did he try to play down the situation about our pass defense when he said "a mere 30th in INTs"? Last time I checked, there were 32 teams in the NFL so 3rd to last is by no means something to neglect.

Problem 2 is when he says "why Houston sat back so passively. The Texans must have known Joe Thomas and Levi Brown wouldn't be on the board by pick No. 10, right?" My big problem here is that with only 6 draft picks (and 6 next year), why would we go and trade up on 1 player? No player is worth an entire draft (sorry, Mike Ditka) and unfortunately this article is suggesting that.

My last problem is the sheer implication he does and the suggestion that we go 3-13. To be honest, who have the Texans lost to suggest that? We lost Carr and Moulds - thats it. He also assumes that Carr was the better QB for us in this situation without having seen Schaub play an entire season (which nobody has in fact). He also assumes our O Line will suck this year too, which may or may not be true. It just kills me how this guys solution to the problem is drafting 1st round OL year after year, and trading everything to do so. Kubiak and Sherman have a plan in place for our O Line and I have faith in it more than I do with this guys plan by a long shot. We just need to hurry up and get to the regular season so guys like this and ESPN will shut up! It kills me when ESPN makes us out to be the worst pass pro team in the league when we actually were 24th overall.

Yeah, this guy obviously only looked at stats, and has never actually watched a texans game. But it seems like he only half looked at the stats. Im sorry, but a guy who just rushed for over 1000 yards while not even playing the full season is not "so done". And he really knew nothing of Schaub calling him only slightly more mobile than drew bledsoe??? That is one of the problems w/ the internet, now any moron can be a "sports writer"

At the end of the day, it's just another punk-@$$ "journalist" who I will be laughing at in a few months.

qft....you could even throw Saints fan in there

I think were pretty close to competing for a playoff spot. It's gonna be tough to win a division title with Manning in our division for the foreseeable future but a 9-7 or 10-6 wild card run could be within our grasp by 2008. We have a lot to be hopeful about. If Green can protect the football, we get a huge upgrade at RB. If Schaub plays like he played when Vick was hurt, we will get a huge upgrade at QB. Considering the fact that our defense is showing major upside, we could be a dangerous team. We finally can throw passes over the middle of the field without relying on passing lanes or rolling out. Let's not forget that either. I can't wait for this season. Most anticipated for me since Year One's opener v Dallas.

The thing is we HAVE changed it. 6-10 may not be our best season when we look at the 7-9 we had but the coaching aspect of our franchise changed and we gained 4 wins alone there. Respect should be given. AT LEAST SOME! Naw... according to them, we're neglecting key needs.

What I'm trying to say is that why doesn't anyone want to give us a chance with Schaub. Many of their questions about our offensive line should be answered at the end of the season. The Texans fans felt that our offensive line isn't too shoddy and I have to agree. Many felt that the problem was Carr and we have now renewed our efforts. It took us five years to rid ourselves of the Doom Capers. That's really not too long if you want to think about this team as of being in rebuild mode.

We have a new QB. Our offensive line is different. Our defense has been revamped. Our coaches took over a complete train wreck and now have made strides. 4 wins is huge anyway you look at it. I attribute those wins to moves made by our coaches. Dayne. DeMeco. Leach. And so on and on. We did this with a horrible learning curve.

We really haven't changed...we are still losers till be prove otherwise. Nobody on the National level is going to think otherwise till we win more games than we lose.

if you think about it the Texans have only been around 5 seasons, so you can't even call us long-suffering fans or anything like that.

Have the Texans made mistakes? Lots of them and some real head scratchers in there as well. But ever since Casserley left, we have gotten more and more momentum and started making smarter moves. Our caproom space is looking good for next year as we are finally beginning to rid ourselves of loads of dead money.

Now that necessary changes are being made and the organization is no longer just burying their head in the sand. I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt this offseason especially due to how the team responded late in the year.

I understand exactly what you're saying but I'm saying that I'd like for us to be projected in a positive manner.

What this tells me about the media though is that because we're on the bottom tier of the NFL, we shouldn't be given any attention. I've heard that Schaub is just another AJ Feely. No matter what we do... we're doomed by the media. Yes, we have to prove ourselves but the media isn't allowing us to do so.

What's going to happen is that we're probably going to end up the cinderella team of the NFL next season and 'shock' everyone when we're in fact not shocking anyone. It's about ignorance. These reporters just aren't doing their jobs. Look at what we've done. I see it as of these reporters NOT doing their jobs to the fullest.

Since there are over 30 teams now...the media just doesn't have the time to feature bad teams...nobody cares outside each bad team's respective market (for the most part). The media tends to spend their time on the better teams. We will get that attention when we are a better team.
