Yahoo Sports grade Texans Draft amoung the Best...

... Not that it means much to me. I've seen grades from D to B, but I'm happy with what we got.

But Yahoo gives us a B+, and looking at their explanation & recap of the other teams, they seem to have a more realistic view of the draft, and what teams are actually trying to accomplish.

Houston Texans: If you factor in that the Texans essentially got quarterback Matt Schaub in this draft and then got the top defensive tackle with the No. 10 overall pick, that's a nice haul. Schaub cost them two second-round picks and a sizeable amount of cash on the contract, but that's the going price with quarterbacks. The actual draft is filled with guys who don't have a lot of upside. Wide receiver Jacoby Jones may be nothing more than a return man and tall returners generally don't have a lot of success. Guard Brandon Frye might be the best gamble of the remaining players because he could develop into a left tackle.

Only the Patriots(A+), the Browns(A-), & Buffalo(B+) recieved grades as high, or higher than ours.

This would carry a whole lot more water if we knew in fact that Schaub was a good QB! It also would have been nice if they drafted him a little help.

FWIW, John McClain said Yahoo has the best draft insight out of all these guys. He also said the same thing that we usually say around here....guys like Kiper don't watch the Texans (not that you can really blame 'em.)

All they ever see of the Texans is highlights of David Carr getting sacked, so they think that means that we must need O-Line first rounders.

that doesn't matter at all.

1) The Raider's used a #1 overall to grab Jamarcus Russell. The Browns used a second & next years first for Brady Quinn, right now, from what we've seen from Matt Schaub, he is as good a prospect with as much upside as either of them. He's performed well in regular season, against good NFL teams, with little preparation if any, and he's performed above the second tier guys he normally sees in the preseason on a consistent basis. That's something neither Brady Quinn, or Jamarcus Russell has done to date, & we believe Schaub is ready to start today. Nobody can say the same thing about either Quinn or Russell. They may end up starting week 1, but as of right now, neither team is confident enough in either to put them on the field right away.

2) So we didn't draft any "help". We like the help we've already got. A true #1 reciever(something Philly has lacked over the last decade, and leave yet another draft without one), a ProBowl running back, veteran guards & center, a future probowl tight end & fullback..... Matt's got plenty of help.

This my problem with most who rate the draft. They will rate one team one way and they graded this because they did not do something different. Then a team with some of the same needs does one thing they say great draft and will ignore the one area of need.

Prime examble .... all these so called draft gurus and experts, always mention the Texans OL but the Texans gave up less sacks than Buffalo, St Louis, Pittsburgh and Detroit, and they did not draft a OL in the first three rounds but they are not bashed for it, but the Texans are. Isn't that being a hypicrit?

I laugh at the whole "grading the draft" anyway. I mean we've all been to school (some more than others), but have we received grades prior to taking the test?

Take last year's draft. We got lambasted for the draft simply because of that first pick, yet the rest our draft class was pretty sweet. We didn't know it until those guys strapped on the pads and made some plays -or- passed the test.

I would be interested this time next year, to see how and why the pundits grade this year's draft - when there is actually a body of work to grade from.

Exactly, Matt has weapons around him. Sure, we could always improve at certain positions, but it is not like our offense supportnig cast is horrible.

I suspect that our FO actually expects Matt to be able to utilize the weapons he has whereas Carr couldn't...JMO. That is why they chose to go the route they did in the draft; build a dominate defense from the ground up.

which is funny because Houston had easily one of the top 5 drafts last year. starters throughout the whole thing. terrific draft.

SF got an A.

Definitely excited about the 49ers' draft class. P-Willie and Joe Staley could be starters and this year. I think Jason Hill can turn out to be an steal, and I thought Ray McDonald was good value as well.

Also I liked Cleveland's draft, even though I'm not sold on the Eric Wright pick. The Jets got some good players too. Atlanta did a nice job also.

Liked your guys' selection of Amobi Okoye.

Not necessarily, if those teams gave up more sacks while running an NFL level passing game. Their sack numbers would go down if they ran a higher percentage of two yard slants like the Texans.

I think he'll keep them, now that they'll probably be ten yard slants where he just needs to break one tackle to get a chance to run real fast. Those are exactly what he's made for.

I'm not as harsh on the draft grade anymore. If I'm correct, then the Texans did pretty okay.

1. I still like Amobi. It might take him a year to get used to the system, but a key to the Texans winning is stopping the league's premiere backs. A good DT goes a long way to curing that problem.

2. I took drafting Jacoby Jones as saying that the Texans have their #2 WR. The stuff I keep hearing sounds like the team is still looking for their next EMO - somebody who must immediately be respected when he stands on the line as a receiver. Jones is a lot like Mathis, meaning a wide receiver project but a helluva return man, which can do a lot for an offense as long as they can be productive. Which brings me to...

3. The run game. Nothing done in the draft, but picking up Ahman Green will also be a major contributor, especially if he and Dayne can stay healthy. A run-first offense needs a great runner. Green can be that runner over the next few years. I am giving him extra leniency because I believe that being back with Sherman will do a lot of good for him.

4. Frye - Actually, I graded out that the best equipped tackles who sounded like ZBS guys were Thomas, Staley, then Frye. So Frye is not that far back in the pack. Is it unreasonable to think he could be starting for the Texans against KC? I don't know, but last year the Texans got use out of their fifth and sixth-round picks. (Granted, they weren't linemen...)

There are still a lot of questions. And the truth is that the team still needs major help in lots of areas. I am not ready to break from my D grade for the Texans quite yet, but I'm getting there. I want to give the Texans two grades: and A+ for Amobi, and a D for the rest of the rounds.

1. totally agree. everything he has done in his life has been an accelerated success but we would do well to be patient with him his first year.

2. if Jacoby is not projected to be a #2 WR by the FO, then they made a huge mistake in drafting him in the 3rd Round. plain and simple.

3. i like our running game. i watched just about ever Packers game this past season and he looked great except he fumbled too much in crucial situations. i think he will have an easier time holding onto the football in the AFC South as opposed to the NFC North. no ice-cold divisional games possible except Tennesee once in a blue moon.

4. Frye was a good pick to add to our OL depth. anything he gives us at either Tackle position within the next 2 years would be solidify this as a good pick.

My problem with the Texans FO is their handling of the Eric Moulds situation and that is about it. They fixed the most obvious problem on the team and made some pretty crafty additions. I like the fact that we didn't overpay for anyone when you look at their contracts. Leach maybe.

I questioned the Ginn pick myself, but honestly, I hope he recovers from that ankle soon and tears it up (as long as we aren't playing the Phins, of course) just to shut some of these people up. We know how it goes. We drafted starters last season, yet we saw those D's and F's.

You got a WR/playmaker, which Miami needed...Booker's not getting younger. You got a QB who many feel is not too far from being game-ready. I'll root quietly for Ginn to shut the Kipers of the world up while Mario Williams crushes Offensive Lines and Quarterbacks.

You've taken inventory in your home, and you've made a list of all the things you need most....Then, when you get there, shopping logic disappears like sale items on a Wal-Mart rack. Instead of laundry soap, you decide that since your other clothes are dirty, you'll just buy new ones..... Make sense? Not really. But this seems like the very same kind of logic (if one can call it that) employed by the Houston Texans on draft day.

This isn't a serious football discussion, but it will cause a smile or two.

On another note, draft grades are 100% worthless, it's people who like to hear themselves talk prediting the future.
