Back then, no one could have predicted the level of anti-Carr sentiment that "started really percolating" after the 2004 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
When fans poured beer on Carr's family in their Reliant Stadium suite, things hit an all-time low. Their love affair was over. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...t/4673356.html |

I heard the media relations guy on 610 this morning. He was pissed about this story.

As Texans fans' confidence evaporated, the calls Lord took on air grew angrier.
"When it did get too personal it was my job to steer it back to objective football talk," Lord said. "I had very little tolerance for people who got personal. It reveals an ugly side of fandom." ************************************* I can't beleive Rich Lord's comment here ? As I recall, he stoked the fire/controversy by constantly promoting hometown hero Vince Young. I mean I to wish now we would have taken young, but to see Lord say here that he tried to be a quieting innfluence. That's a laugh. If anything, its the opposite. |

What strikes me the most about this article is that it's in the Entertainment section, on the same page with links to a story on Paris Hilton's legal problems and a reality TV show contestant.
Reminds me of a joke a comedian once said; "I remember when 'Sebastian Bach of Skid Row' was a job title. Now it's an address."

The media relations guy kept on about how many interviews that Carr gave. The 610 guys agreed with him. They said the writer is really an entertainment writer. |

While I agree that Carr could've handled his media relations a little better, quoting the 610 guys for credibility is just stupid. Who is Andrew Guy any way?
Then again, there really wasn't much of anything Carr could've done better from a PR standpoint, other than: (1) Win more games. (2) Become Vince Young.

I heard this same thing. The guy was peeved. He said that he understood not wanting Carr around but all in all when it came to media relations he always fulfilled his duties and always answered questions. As you said, he said this guy didn't interview anyone who was a beat writer at the time or who was close to the situation. It wasn't the 610 guys doing this. It was the P.R. guy calling in to let steam off. If you read the article though, there isn't much to the media stuff. It is more opinions on when the tide turned. Seems like a puff piece gone bad.

Wow I didn't know some Texans fans were as trashy as Eagles fans. Pouring beer on the guy's family, what a disgrace. here's hoping those people drop dead tonight.

When I first heard about that I felt anger towards them, felt ashamed for them, felt badly for Carr's family and all the decent fans in Houston who innocently got a black eye for their actions...but it's bad mojo to wish death upon someone for misdemeanor assault. Generally the universe finds a way to even everything out. Karma will take care of it.

It all started downhill for Carr when Vince Young won the National Championship and a couple of guys wanted Young to be a Texan. They cried when they didn't get their way.

It all started downhill for Carr when he was selected first overall by an expansion team that wasn't ready to develop him. It was a bad fit from the beginning, IMO.

It wasn't a bad pick, it was bad coaching to not let him sit for a year and take it all in. We should have started an old veteran at the beginning. I hope that this same process will benefit Schaub.

Eh, I don't buy that coaching ruined Carr....he was just overrrated. Sure he had a few nice moments, but so did Joey Harrington.

I don't know, AJ's comments the last couple of days have been pretty damning of the coaching staff. Then again maybe Carr's inability to make the right read forced teh caoching staff into the paterns Johnson has talked about. It would be nice to hear the whole story of those first 3 years.

Those same coaches have not taken that tactic with every QB they have coached. Why was Carr different in that regard? And he had over 3500 yards in 2004, so I'm not buying that it's all the coaches and/or offensive line's fault. That sounds like convenient scapegoating to me by his supporters. He's got to be accountable in some regard for being the QB he is today. |

I will never discount the negative effect the poor coaching, cursory player development, and petty politics had on this team.

But I just can't blame all of Carr's shortcomings on everyone else, especially after reading his college scouting report and comparing it to who he is today. I really have to wonder if coaching could change some of his ingrained tendencies and shortcomings. |

With all the focus on Carr people tend to forget that a lot of the young Texan players never achieved their promise, or they blame that failure on the individuals being busts. I believe it was the coaching and finding scapegoats to cover for Carr. Most of them didn't get $35M to cover the career damages either. It wasn't all scouting; it was mostly player development.

With everything that has come out over the years, I have become of the mind that one of Carr's failings was in being "too nice a guy" or "too much a team player"--at some point when your career is being effected it is time to start saying something to the coaches, rebelling against the coaches (how about an argument when Pendry wanted to take back control in either game Carr "called" the plays in the 1st half) or saying non-cruddy things to the press which reflect reality. There is more than just being a clown to get your point across and exert some influence. Hey, how about this--call the play with AJ as the 1st read and then just look 1st to Gaffney or the TE? Seriously, if you have the kind of character that could take the mismanagement of the 1st 4 years and not rebel, I am not sure the fire or independent thought is sufficient.
