So, whos the stud DT?

Judging by our run defense so far this year.. and the age of our dlinemen.. id say that a DT or DE is a safe bet for our first round draft pick.

So.. anyone out there have any opinions on who it could end up being?

Factors in choosing a Dlineman:

1. Obviously he has to be big.. we need big guys up front

2. Has to be a beast against the run, but needs some pass rush as well if we are gonna give a 1st for him.

3. being from Texas is a plus.

4. Cant be arrogant or selfish... not very likely to see that in a lineman but still worth mentioning.

of those.. Ngata looks the most promising to me.. but also like the biggest risk. you arent positive what you are getting in him. Also.. from a personal standpoint.. im not big on the Mormon thing . But that is neither here nor there. I also wonder if he is truely dedicated to football.. or if it is just "something he wants to do".. could he get tired of it after 4 or 5 years in the league and stop giving 100%?

I dont like that Hawthorne and Wright both have a reputation for lazyness.. That seems to be something that doesnt go over too well in our organization. I would love to get us a startling Dlineman from Texas.. but of the two.. Hawthorne sounded better with his run stopping ability.

As of today, the best situation and most probable will be getting Marcus Spears, a defensive end at LSU. This will cause Robaire to move inside and send Payne to the bench. Spears is exactly what the defense needs as he is able to both penetrate and get pressure on the quarterback. Again, this is the most likely scenario considering

A) Where we are in the draft today (15th pick)
B) Health of Gary Walker
C) DLine doing nothing the rest of the year

well.. what would you say is the deepest position in this years draft?

If it is anything like last years draft.. the DTs could fall pretty far down the list.

That forum post is nice.. it sure puts Wright in a positive light. Of those.. the ones that most interested me are:

8. DT Marcus Jasmin, 6-5 315 SR, Texas A&M

9. DT Gabriel Watson, 6-3 350, JR, Michigan (talk about a great 3-4 DT)

11. DT Anthony Bryant, 6-3 330, SR, Alabama(could fall to the 2nd or 3rd rnd)

and Ngata still looks good.. assuming his knee is fine.


And for a DE.. how about

3. Shawn Cody, 6-4, 292, SR, USC

according to the post he has the frame to support 20 more pounds of muscle

although not a glorius position, the center position might be one of the deeper ones in a decade. If Florida's Mike Degory comes out, that would mean Degory, OU's Vince Carter, LSU's Ben Wilkerson, Hampton's Jelani Clement and Arizona's Keoki Fraser might all go before round 2.

I can tell you that theres about 5 teams looking at Jelani pretty heavily right now in the 3rd round or so. Jelani is a wonderful guy and a great prospect. MEAC Olineman of the week 2 times so far. EASports.com OLineman of the week last week vs. Gardner-Webb. I'd love to see him in a Texans uni next year

Right now, you're looking at Anthony Bryant being a late 3rd early 4th round guy as the surprise "man how'd he drop so far" of this year

Wright seems like the stud DT in the draft. Ngata is a very high risk because of health issues (we already have one in Payne) but would be the #1 NT prospect. Marcus Spears seems like the best of the rest & would be available when the Texans select, my concern about him is his character & affect to team chemistry. He will certainly be scrutinized and evaulted very closely.

It seems to me the Texans have a chance to build or go in several different directions with the defense. If the player they covet is available it may be CB (Webster) DT (Spears) or DE (Pollack). I'm assuming the Texans will finish with a .500 record so drafting around 15-20th these players would make sense.

To draft the Stud DT they would have to trade up to get Rodrique Wright

I think the only way we draft Pollack is if we shifted him to OLB, and I really don't see the Texans using another first round pick on another DE/OLB. Chances are Pollack wouldn't last to our pick anyway.

Edit: Is he 261 lbs or closer to 280? I've seen it both ways.

interesting prospect for an OLB especially if he is available in the 3rd round. you can never have too many LBs in the 3-4.

Pollack was 280 last year. He has dropped weight and is playing at 261 this year.

he would be our best pass rushing DE even if he played OLB and lined up in the 4-3 on passing downs. Babin could hold the right side & Pollack the left the combination of the two would be lethal.

right now the Texans currently reside in the #16 pick draft location, obviously subject to change. He is a bigger, more polished version of Babin that would give the Texans another high motor to chase around opposing QB's. In case you haven't noticed the typical 3-4 DT just don't have the speed to keep up with the modern day QBs you need speed as well as strength & agility in the backfield. I relented on Udeze last year because of the size issue, and I'm happy the Texans found a true gem in Robinson but now the Texans need to address the pass rush with the highest skilled, intelligent good character in the draft I'm sticking with David Pollack

Pollack does weigh 261. This is his posted weight on the Georgia Bulldogs roster page. During games the announcers have also mentioned that he now weighs 261. I know this because I have watched all the games this year.

As for him benching 700 lbs , where did you get that number? Ben Watson just broke the Georgia record last year by benching 600 lbs. Pollack only benches around 465. If you know anything about Pollack, you know he isn't a workout warrior.

pollack was up to 280 last year and then went on a diet of only polyinsaturated fats and is now down to 261, according to his article in espn the magazine. also he squats 700 not benches 700. wags the article also said he has his own key to the weight room and he worked out 2 times a day in the off-season.
