Default analyze our DLine?

Can someone analyze our DLine and comment on strengths/weaknesses and what can we do to improve. exclude injuries as weaknesses. who should be starting and who should be in during pass/running situations.

mario- injuried last year so we don't really know what we have with him yet

TJ- has the talent to be good...but hasn't stepped up the plate yet and become the player we need him to be

maddox- kind of an unknown...has the talent to be a starter and maybe with a full off-season here he'll really come into his own here

weaver- this is your classic 3-4 DE...we're having him play DE in our 4-3 in running situations and DT in passing situations...personally i don't see him as an everydown player for us

babin- can you say 1st round bust...situational pass rusher

everyone else- situational guys who fill roster spots...few of them have a chance to develop into quality players for us since a lot of them are in the end of their career

at somepoint we need to start getting guys who can challenge our starters for playing time...we still need a DE who can start opposite mario and be a solid 7 sack guy

I like our D line.. but the plan is for the "situational roation"... different players play depending on the down and distance.

Its a great theory.. but it is all based on getting the right players on the field. Some team runs a no huddle, and chances are you are stuck with the wrong people on the field..

yeah it's a good theory if everything happens the way you expect it too...the problem is when you start getting injuries those guys who you only wanted in there for a hand full of downs have now become your full time starters

not saying that smith could have done anything different just simply pointing out that on our d-line we don't have the guys who are being groomed to take over starting roles like they have in phili...last year when the starters came out in phili their "back-ups" brought just as much pressure as the main guys did...just goes to show you how much capers and casserly really screwed this team up

the dline is not too bad. they seem to get a lot of help from our lb's which are looking greater and greater as u look at the roster. its definitely just injuries, weaver could help mario so much on that other end, and travis johnson just really needs to put it into 5th gear and play like a 16th pick.

I disagree with some of your opinions. Travis Johnson is on a very short leash. He could be cut during minicamps. He has shown no consistancy, he is not a pass rush. He was drafted to play DT in a 3-4 where he would take space and stop the run. He has yet to do any in his career.

Babin was drafted to play a 3-4 OLB. I dont want to rate him when he played for Capers cause we all saw how Steve Foley played for the Chargers when he was consider crap by Dom Capers and his staff.

Maddux, Thomas Johnson are below average. They played hard but I still would like to see an upgrade in the spots.

You have 2 spots taken in the line. Mario at LE and Weaver at DT (better DT than DE). You need a pass rusher for RE.. Babin sometimes but you also need a good starter there and another starting DT.

You make a very good stance. That is why if we stay at the #8 spot, I would not be upset to take BPA. About the only position I would scratch my head at if they selected would be LB...but there is not really a top 10 pick LB in this years draft. I believe our priority is FS, OL, CB, QB, DT, WR. Did I miss a position? LOL!!

Dline is average with a high ceiling of potential. Unfortunantly, we must find a way to move Weaver inside. He was our most consistent Dlinemen last year, but is playing run-stopper rather than pass rusher. Plain and simple, his biggest issue is that he is not a pass rushing end. We really need someone that is going to put pressure on the quarterback and Weaver/Babin ain't cutting it. I love the way the guy plays and I would be very disapppointed if he doesn't come back healthy next year. With that said, it shouldn't be out of the question that the Texans are looking for a pass rushing DE opposite Mario in the draft. IMO, if Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson fall to the Texans, we are drafting them without hesitation. So, to answer your question.....my opinion is that the Dline can be great, but we need to get someone that can get to the quarterback rather than occupying a running lane. It's so important that we are able to pressure the QB, and it starts up front. If we select Anderson or Adams, you won't see us drafting a Dlineman on Day 1 for the next 3 years because they'll be that good.
