Does anyone else tend to disagree with the "expert" picks of us nabbing the offensive linemen? I just think that our line will be fine if it's healthy...I can't see too much a reason why we would pick one, other than when Kubiak said that he can't rely on the hope of guys coming back from injury.

Anyone have numbers on this guy and if he'd fit into our system?

Regardless, we need to keep drafting talent, and improving our line. A team like ours shouldn't ever take a year off, like we did in '04.

I don't believe that necessarily means we should take an Offensive Linemen in the first round every year, every other year, or ever for all that matters. If the coach doesn't believe the drop-off is as steep as many around here believe(some think the only round worth talking about is the first), then we might end up with an undrafted FA who'll play on our practice squad through '07, then start all 16 games at LT, like Erik Pears did for the Broncos.

Im just not personally sold on Levi Brown
I think he's a mid round (pick 15-25) talent who wouldn't even be near the top 10 if this draft wasn't completely devoid of tackles

If Quinn isn't available, the Texans would be wise to use this pick on an upgrade for their marginal offensive line.
Marginal? That's a step-up from the "horrible" they called it a short while back.

Putting topic in wrong forum, I understand.

2nd, I only put the Texans pick - I didn't post the whole article. How else am I suppose to paraphrase? Just put the name of who the Texans pick?

Anywho.

Back to the Levi Brown pick, I don't like it either.

I am not convinced he is #8 material, not a big enough improvement over who you might get 2nd, 3rd round.

Not when you could get a special talent like Quinn, Peterson, Johnson, Okoye, Landry, Adams, Anderson......

Speaking of Anderson, what happened to his die hard fan base that was around here a few weeks ago??

The only reason why I dont like taking him at 8 is I am sure that we could trade back and get him in the middle of the 1st round and get an additional pick, besides like stated above the drop off between him and the next 3 LT prospects is minimal and those guys are 2nd and 3rd rounders.

why do you have to be convinced to the Texans really care

the arguement its not a big enough improvement over who you might get in the 2nd/3rd round reflects a lack of understanding how to rate prospects or seen enough game film to have an educated evaluation.

listen one more time there are only two tackle prospects in the 07 draft who are ready to start next year in the NFL, period. thats Joe Thomas & Levi Brown. Brown also gives you the option to play RT as well. the rest of the tackle prospects are just that prospects who have to get stronger/more techincally sound/develop skill set. it would be a mistake to think the Texans could draft another 3rd round tackle prospect & plug him into the starting role @ LT, its gonna take time. the only reason it happened last year is because they're was a HUGE NEED/HOLE. then we all know what happened, Spencer was lost for the season w/broken Tibia & Winston took all season to work his way into the lineup & be competititve.

that being said what most non-believers are really saying is that Levi Brown is a boring pick, I'm not going to argue that point. people want a playmaker in the sense they create excitement on the field, make plays/difference & give us someone to follow, hopefully into greatness. I get that, heck I want that too but don't dish Levi because hes not worthy of the 8th pick.

the Texans have blown chances just fine on their own with potential prospects in the past & y'all still want that special player (local even better) to rescue the franchise just check the frustration @ the front door :brickwall

I am not a big fan of drafting Levi Brown at #8. There are too many other guys we can draft that would help us alot more than Levi Brown at 8.

Ah, I've been tending to agree with the experts that we need a siginificant up grade in o-line tallent. And a few of us have been saying it for three years now.

250 sacks, countless hits, can't pick up third and short, and they can't get a seven step drop off. There's three. And I didn't even have to try hard. ER ....at least half of Kubiack's play book is out the window when the #65 prospect went down the second game...there that's four. No one has seen a report that Spencer's knee will be fully healed by August...er that's five....

No reason ?

Agreed beerlover. I'm starting to get the "mind think" of the board though. OK you got a guy at the top of the board...best prospect to come down the pike in a good fifteen years. Soon as you go up and get the guy he solves the five year old problem...do they want to go get him. not just no. BUT He77 NO. They want to stand pat and watch the stud RB, with the same group of o-lineman BTW, get stuffed for sixteen games with eight and nine in the box. OR over kill on the free safty prospect. They'll move up for the running back. They'll move up for the Once in a generation WR. But have a guy on the board that Locks down the position that's litteraly killed us for five years they turn their noses and say , no thanks.

OK so Levi isn't Joe Thomas. But ...how many Jammall Brown's and Marcus McNiel's do you guys have to by pass to get "it". No one throws good veteran OLT's away. You're not going to get one unless you draft one. Or, pay a very dear price in free agency. It's not that you don't get it. It's that you don't want to face the grim reality that that's what needs to be done if we're going to make the jump. They need to upgrade the o-line . And have needed too since when Bosselli anounced he couldn't go.

Free or Staley might be the home run. We'll see. Then you've got the Kolb guys reaching for him in the second with the 39 pick and by passing the two reaches at OLT to get their home town boy. Now you're down to the fifth round guys. And you know you're not going to see those guys for a couple of seasons.

All I know for a fact is Levi basically man handled everyone they threw at him in the senior bowl week. Is that good enough with his body of work at Penn St. ? Just don't go cring on the board a couple of season from now when the guy makes the pro bowl and it turns out this franchise by passed #3. Too funny. Yep beerlover, I'm frustrated alrighty.

8. Houston (6-10)

Projected pick: Levi Brown, OT, Penn State
The first part of that mock:

1. Oakland Raiders (2-14)
Projected pick: +JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson will be tempting if a deal is made to move WR Randy Moss between now and the draft. Otherwise, the Raiders have a glaring hole at the quarterback position. While some concerns have risen regarding Russell's work ethic, owner Al Davis should still favor the strong-armed Russell over Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn.

2. Detroit (3-13)
Projected pick: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame
Quinn moving up six spots in this mock has more to do with the Lions than Quinn's actual draft stock. By addressing needs at running back (Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett), offensive tackle (George Foster) and defensive end (Dewayne White) via free agency, the Lions have the flexibility to pull the trigger on a future franchise quarterback with this pick. The Lions could also get a blockbuster trade offer for the No. 2 overall pick, which would be the best-case scenario considering their abundance of needs.

3. x-Cleveland (4-12)
Projected pick: +Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma
The Browns would have a tough decision to make between Peterson and Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas in this scenario. Despite the fact the Browns signed free agent RB Jamal Lewis recently, I still think Peterson is the pick. Lewis has loads of mileage on his legs and the team only signed him to a one-year deal. The veteran back could split carries with Peterson, which would give the rookie a year to get acclimated before taking over as the full-time starter in 2008 -- much like the Corey Dillon/Laurence Maroney situation with the Patriots last season.

4. x-Tampa Bay (4-12)
Projected pick: +Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
The Bucs have other more pressing needs but it won't be easy for general manager Bruce Allen and coach Jon Gruden to pass on the draft's most dynamic offensive weapon.

5. Arizona (5-11)
Projected pick: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin
This is the best-case scenario for a Cardinals team in desperate need of an upgrade at offensive tackle. Thomas is the premier offensive line talent in the 2007 class and he's ready to start immediately.

6. Washington (5-11)
Projected pick: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
Adams is the perfect fit for a Redskins defense that set a team record for the fewest sacks in a season (19) in 2006. The 6-foot-5, 258-pound end ran the fastest 40 time of all the defensive linemen at the combine and also notched 29 career sacks at Clemson.

7. Minnesota (6-10)
Projected pick: +Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas
The Vikings still have needs at defensive end and wide receiver even after spending high picks on those positions in recent drafts. Anderson notched 13 sacks during a breakout junior campaign in 2006 and he also has a great frame at 6-foot-5, 288 pounds.

I see that as a worst case mock for the Texans - because out top 7 would be gone (my choices in order):
1. Joe Thomas - he will be gone - simply because we need a stud OT
2. Peterson - he is probably gone - a better dickerson
3. CJ - he will be gone - don't really need him but he and AJ would be scary
4. Russell - he is likely gone - we need qb - see Quinn below
5. Quinn - he is probably gone - but we need a qb and you gotta take chances sometimes - all the arguments about him would apply to Russell if we were picking earlier - or to Palmer/Vick/etc. in whatever year.
6. Gaines Adams- may be there -because a stud DE would hopefully round out our DL.
7. JAnderson - See Adams

That still leaves us with 2 stud DTs sitting there: Okoye and Branch.
I would prefer a DE, but a DT still rounds out our DL - it will be more run oriented and we might still need a situational pass rusher - but our DL on first and second would be strong against the run and pass.

But, for fun, the next few:
8. Okoye - DT - would force us to make Weaver more DE than DT so I would rather have the DE - but our run D would be stout.
9. Branch - see Okoye
10. Chris Houston - CB - I think he could be the Dunta of this draft. Plus, later round CBs are almost as risky as CBs and this is too expensive to fill through FA.
11/12 Nelson/Landry - whichever looks like a better fit - which is probably Nelson.
13. Levi Brown - at this point, with the studs gone and no decent CBs left, I would have to take the best OT. Plus, he is probably worth a top 20 pick anyway(and only if the FO had him ranked as top 20).

JMO - but I really hope this isn't the way the picks fall. And, I doubt it would because stud DTs like Branch/Okoye always go higher than you expect.

Umm.......You are NOT supposed to copy paid sites stuff on here. It says that at the top of this thread.

Good call Pete. You put it into perspective very well.
