Default Our Carr is running on empty

I will be honest here, I have tons of respect for David Carr. The guy has taken a beaten for us and from us. I have always supported him and wanted to keep him, but I have to face it he is running on out of gas in Houston. We all know we passed on VY last year. We don't need to pass again. We need to take Quinn. Quinn is no Vince, But he will be a good QB. What I'm trying to say is that when you are running low in gas and you pass on one gas station you better stop at the next one. I'm sure most of you know what it feels like to run out of gas.

Since Carr will most likely be here in 2007, unless a miricle happens, what are your thoughts on Kolb? Quinn seems like a decent choice he just seems to make bad decisions under pressure.

Default Re: Our Carr is running on empty

I'm one of the (seemingly few) people who thinks Carr deserves one last year here. However, if we go another direction I will understand as well. I don't think we made a mistake in the least bit last year by passing on Vince and Reggie. The two of them are great players, but they're the types of players at their respective positions that I'm not particularly fond of (never liked the run-first mentality of a QB a la Michael Vick, although it may be needed here until we can fix the line).

Likewise, I'm not too fond of Brady Quinn myself, either. I get the feeling that Kubiak is going to go that way, however, because I think he's starting to feel a little pressure from saying that he can help Carr, and now the team acting like Carr is all but gone.

I'm in the stable that thinks we need to go defense first, we're closer there, and we've got big gaps to fill in the areas we need. I think that if we can get consistent line play, and consistent QB play, our offense will work well enough to get us where we want to go, but always coming on the field with the mentality of "how many points do we have to make up this time" apparently is beyond our teams reach as of right now. I don't think that a rookie QB's going to fix that this year or the next.

I would have liked us to make a move for a veteran QB in FA, but now I would prefer to let Rosenfels and Carr battle it out and concentrate on the other holes with this team in the draft.

I'm willing to give Carr another year, just for the fact that I would love to see us draft Kolb and go defense with Landry at #8. Quinn is not out of the ?, and i think Kube's is really eyeballing him. The only way i would draft Quinn is if he fell to #8, i hope like hell we don't try to move up and get him and give away draft picks. Did hear that Kubes was very impressed with Kolb at hte combine also, so go figure. BTW, does anyone know when U of H pro day is? I think we will get a much better feeling about Kolb and what kubes/smith really thinks about him.

This is not a personal attack, please do not take it as such. However, I see this type of thinking often in the corporate investment context. It goes something like, "We made a big mistake...we need to invest here to make up for it."

No.

The decision to invest, whether it is in stock, a project, or to draft a QB, should be made based upon the merits of the project alone.

Drafting or not drafting Quinn will not help us make up for passing on VY, period. VY has left the station. (And I am not commenting on whether passing on VY was a mistake or not.) The Texans need to take a look at their needs, their competition, availability of talent, this year and next, and formulate a draft execution strategy. The FO knows all this.

Now, I have nothing against Quinn. I am sure he will do fine in the NFL. But I look at the opportunity cost of drafting Quinn -- someone like LaRon Landry, Amobi Okoye, etc. Looking within the context of QB's like Stanton and Kolb available in rounds 2/3, and in consideration of existing roster talent, MHO is that the cost of drafting Quinn is too high. In fact, should he be on the board when the Texans are on the clock, I hope the phone rings and we consider moving down where we might extract more value from drafting someone like Okoye, while picking up much needed picks.

Just my $0.02.

I understand your sentiment and that's fine. But I never said he deserved to start. I just said he deserves another year.

But I also am one that doesn't think Sage showed anything worthwhile last year...and despite all the evidence brought forth, I didn't see anything in the limited time that he played that said he was worth starting. That's not to say he can't...that's just saying that I didn't see anything based on his performance last year.

If we're to get rid of Carr, we might as well draft someone in the later rounds and let Carr hold on to the reigns for a while longer. If nothing else, Kubiak could at least say "see, this is what you don't do in these situations".

Actually, I think there is no chance he will be here in 2007. There is no way the coaches and GM are going into a season with Carr. As the original poster in this thread stated, there is nothing against Carr but at some point the team and player must move on. You can't carry a guy who has been called out by teammates and has bene openly floated as trade bait all off-season. He isn't in their plans at all. If there is anything certain to me right now it is that Sage is the starter, they are looking to draft a young guy and that they will pick up a backup along the way. Either way, it will be a 1-2 year training ground for the new guy. I prefer to take a guy in the 2nd or 3rd(Kolb or Stanton) instead of Quinn. I've said this many times now, we are at the point where you part ways and hope both parties do really well. The marriage itself here, though, is beyond repair and is hurting those left behind. I understand that there is Carr love out there but I really don't get how anyone can objectively look at the situation the whole organization and team is in right now and think Carr being back would be positive in any way, shape or form.

Allow me to defend myself, I in no way think the Texans made a mistake last year by not going with VY. As a matter of fact I supported the pick of Mario. We had an awesome draft. What I was trying to say is that the best choice is Brady Quinn. Let him learn the system for a year then start him. If we go for a saftey, what will that help? Name a saftey that was an early pick that has made a major contribution to their respected team. The only one I can think of is Ed Reed. Who ever they decide to draft I will like it, because they are the experts, not me.

Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Troy Polamalu, Roy Williams...Bob Sanders was a first rounder for Indy..its an important position. Come on now...you want another year of CC brown? Landry in the first, Dwayne Jarrett in the 2nd, Drew stanton in the 3rd..thats a hell of a draft.

Something went squirrelly with the quotations. I believe the second paragraph which was inadvertently attributed to me in its entirety in your post was actually posted by texansfan1974, clarifying and making a case for drafting Quinn.

Switching to your point about Landry -- I agree. Landry is a beast and I love the prospect of his patrolling our secondary, wreaking havoc and blowing up folks on crossing routes. He would be a big improvement to our secondary, in a division where we would benefit from having a strengthened secondary.

Conversely, I know the Texans have many holes and could benefit from more picks. Maybe we slide back a few picks and pick up Reggie Nelson. Are they that far apart, Reggie and LaRon? For example, suppose Quinn is still on the board at 8: CAR calls us to swap picks. We slide to 14, pick up Reggie and another 2nd (or whatever the draft chart supports). Picking up an additional second would enable us to address both CB and DT/DE, or WR and DT/DE.

Now wouldn't that be a good start to a draft?
1/ S Reggie Nelson
2/ DE Lamar Woodley
2/ WR (from CAR)
3/ QB Stanton

If we do not trade back AND we draft Landry, I am still screaming for joy and reaching for another beer.

For some of you who say give Carr a chance one more year because he deserves a chance must be smoking sum or must be on sum kind of medication you must of missed watching/going or keeping up with the Texans these past 5 years.. I will say give Rosenfels the chance and get rid of CARR ASAP.
