Default Samson Satele

If we can't get Kalil how about :

Samson Satele
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 278 pounds
Hometown: Kaneohe, HI

Later round pick to take Hogdons spot on the roster? I am not sure where he is projected to be picked.

"One question persists as Samson Satele makes the rounds among the NFL types interviewing him at Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Ala.

"They all ask if I can run block," Satele said in a phone interview Wednesday. "I felt like I answered it pretty good on the (practice) field today."

The question comes up because the scouts know Satele played at Hawaii, known more for breaking passing records than running the football.

But a scout said Satele, like everyone else, has had his good reps and his bad reps. That's how it is for even the bluest of chips competing for draft position. The difference is Satele has improved as the week has gone by, the scout said.

Satele has been playing center and guard in practice.

"They're having me split the reps. It's good that I can play both," Satele said. "It's fun. Felt like three games in a row. I love the contact and tempo of the practice. There are some good players over here."

After tomorrow's game, Satele returns to the Plex training center in Houston to prepare for the combine. His former teammates, offensive tackle Dane Uperesa, defensive lineman Melila Purcell and running back Nate Ilaoa -- also clients of Goeas' -- are also working out there. So is Kahuku graduate Palani Ma Sun, an offensive lineman who played at Oregon."

What little of him I saw in the combine telecast he looked good and never stopped hustling.

I don't know what his reps were at lifting.

And he is training in Houston?

Any thoughts?

I saw his non-combine 40 at 5.2, so he's pretty fast. The only reason I would pass is because of questions to run block. The Texans need somebody who can run and pass-block.

278 would be too light, I think. But, Satele weighed in at an even 3 bills, so that's not a real concern.

Yea, where did the 278 come from? I thought he weighed 295 -300. Which is heavier than Kalil. Also he has not played a certain technique, doesn't mean he will not be able to do it. How athletic is he? You also have to look at the quickness not the 40 time, oh and 5.2 is not fast, under 5.0 is considered fast for a lineman. Does any one know his time in the short shuttle? And what did he lift?

Vince Manuwai, also from Hawaii, had the same concerns coming out of the '03 draft. He's done well in Jacksonville. Yeah, there's an adjustment. But, it doesn't mean a guy should be written off.

fflivewire.com has some combine numbers. Not sure if they are official.

Satele's numbers:
40: 5.26
Bench: 25
VJ: 33.5"
20 yd shuttle: 4.29
3 cone: 7.47

Are these numbers "good" or "bad"? I have no idea.

They are good. You can compare his numbers to others at nfl.com. His 40 dash time is his worst thing, but as an OL, I don't care.

25 reps? I think Jay Cutler did more than that.

I like this guy, but I'm not sure how well he'd fit in our system.

Satele, prior to this past season, played OLG. The Warriors had a huge hole at OC and, before the season began, Satele went to June Jones and volunteered to move to the center position for the good of the team. He essentially played the position on talent and athleticism. He played the position well enough to be regarded as the second best OC in this years draft and, by some boards, the best center. He's very good at pass blocking and adequate at run blocking with lots of upside with more experience and coaching. He has some holes in his game but they seem to be the sort that, with coaching, they can be corrected or improved upon.

The numbers for Nick Mangold, last year, are:
(40 yd)5.05 (20 yd)2.95 (10 yd)1.72 (Bench Reps)24 (Vertical)27 1/2 (Broad Jump)8'8" (Shuttle)4.40 (Cone)7.48

Satele is not an elite OC (Mangold was considered elite) and in a strong year for the position would probably be taken no higher than the 3rd round, possibly the 4th. He has enough talent that he would be an upgrade at the position for the Texans and should develop into a very good player. He has the mobility to fit a zone blocking scheme as well as having above average power for a center.

I went back to try to find where I got my original info on Sateles' weight being 278.

Couldn't find it again...weight was listed from 300 to 311 on the sites I visited tonight.

It's all good. I like the guy if he is there in the 3rd or 4th round and we miss Kalil.
