24. Ryan Kalil, Center USC
28. Kevin Kolb, QB Houston
39. Chris Houston, CB Arkansas
73. Brandon Mebane, DT Cal
104. James Martin, OT Boston College
135. Gary Russell, RB Minnesota
169. Justin Hickman, OLB UCLA
200. Kevin Boss, TE Western Oregon
Some things I think could be moved around:
It is a general consensus that we damn well better not take Kolb in the first. He isn't that talented, and doesn't have the potential to even think of reaching. I love the trade idea, because some of my top targets are these guys.
I think Houston will end up being a first rounder farily soon. Merriwether will work himself up, but probally won't go 1st round because of Nelson and Landry.
I love the Mebane pick, and I'll throw in Kareem Brown as a second option in case Mebane is already picked.
I don't think Martin has too much of a future in the NFL, and I really don't see the need to spend a 4th rounder on a guy who shouldn't play. I think here is where we can take a pass-rushing DE. The DE from Hawaii or the guy from Central Michigan. I think we gamble on a pass-rushing DE who just produces. (Mark Anderson and Dummerville last year)
I'm telling you right now, Russell is an awesome back. He was a better RB at Minny than Marony, he just had a little class trouble. Good size, strengh, and speed, who produced when he played.
I'm a little hesitant to convert a DE to a 4-3 OLB, but he might be worth the gamble that late. I think we could also look at OG help, someone like Casey Studdard.
The 7th rounder doesn't matter much, so I think we can afford to take a flyer on a ST player. I don't really have anyone in mind this early, so I'll leave your guy alone.
Here is what my mock would look like with the NE trade implied:
24. Ryan Kalil, Center USC
28. Chris Houston, CB Arkansas
39. Brandon Merriwether, FS/NB Miami
73. Brandon Mebane, DT Cal
104. Ikaika Alam-Francis, DE Hawaii
135. Gary Russell, RB Minnesota
169. Casey Studdard, OG Texas
200. Kevin Boss, TE Western Oregon
With this draft, we get our O-Line leader and a true all-pro canidate. We get a physical, man-to-man specialist CB with good speed and size. We get a FS who is a good enough cover man to play NB if needed, and who knows how to support, also has a certain swagger. We land an explosive, high motor DT who specializes in pennatration. We find ourselves a speed rusher off the edges to compliment Mario. We find a steal at RB with Russell, who has everything you look for in a RB, and should earn at least the primary back up out of TC. We land a solid OG who did his job at UT and didn't give up much. And we get some TE who will get cut.
I don't think ANYONE could argue with this draft.
